Upton’s Naturals develops banana blossom… a novel entry to the plant-based food arena: 'It has a light, delicate, flaky texture like fish'

Banana blossom: 'It has a light, delicate, flaky texture like fish, and works really well breaded and fried as a fish alternative...'

“I can’t believe how many companies looked at Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods and said, 'That looks like it’s been successful, let’s try to do the exact same thing.' We’ve always tried our best to have things that set us apart from what already exists, and keep an extremely clean label,” Dan Staackmann told FoodNavigator-USA.

“I became a vegan 28 years or so ago, and it opened my mind and my palate to so many ethnic foods that I would never have considered as a teenager that ate pepperoni pizza and ice cream.

"You don’t have to eat banana blossom or jackfruit [instead of meat]  every day, but it’s just exciting to discover new foods and introduce new things into your life.”

With listings secured in Whole Foods stores nationwide (although the launch may be a little delayed owing to coronavirus), Upton’s Naturals’ banana blossom is cooked in a retort pouch in a small amount of brine and is a shelf-stable product with a shelf-life of two years (although it should be refrigerated and consumed in days once opened).

The plan is to stock it in the ethnic food set alongside a lightly seasoned shredded jackfruit product also under the Upton’s Naturals brand.

'Americans are far more fiber-deficient than protein-deficient'

“Right now, it’s a waste item that doesn’t [routinely]  get used for anything. I’ve seen it fresh, minced up in some Thai dishes or sold canned and brined, but it’s not widely available here [in the US].

"It has a light, delicate, flaky texture like fish, and works really well breaded and fried as a fish alternative. It's a new ingredient [to Americans]  so we have a recipe on the back of pack that gives people clear instructions on what to do with it, plus we’ll have recipes on our website [once it launches].”

Like jackfruit – the star ingredient in other Upton’s Naturals products – banana blossom is packed with fiber and micronutrients, but isn’t a great source of protein, something Staackmann isn’t losing any sleep over.

“One thing people forget is that Americans are far more fiber-deficient than protein deficient.”

Coronavirus: 'Things are changing by the minute'

Like many food companies sourcing ingredients or packaging from overseas, Staackmann has faced some recent challenges thanks to coronavirus, which impacted a packaging supplier in Sri Lanka, where the banana blossom is sourced and packaged.

“ There’s no issue with the banana blossom, but there’s been some issues with the packaging and getting things in and out of the country. Some samples we’d sent in are stuck at customs, for example.”

The product was supposed to hit Whole Foods in early May, and now it could be summer or early fall, he said.

Meanwhile, the firm’s new wheat protein-based jerky bites   are expected to hit some US stores this summer although an international retailer that was going to launch them in August has now pushed back the launch until Q4 or 2021, he said.

“Everything is in flux for a lot of people right now. Things are changing by the minute. Some retailers are going forward [as planned]  and some of them are saying we're not really looking at anything new right now until things get back to normal."

On the plus side, Staackmann has not had any major issues with securing supplies of jackfruit (used in several key products), which he sources from Thailand.  "It's on lockdown but food is classed as an essential business and the products are getting through.

"We've seen higher prices on one or two spices that go into our products but we think it's only going to be short term."

The quest to precisely mimic the taste and texture of meat and dairy is driving innovation in the next generation of ‘plant-based’ foods. But there is also growing demand for less ‘processed’ products made from whole foods, says the CEO of Cool Beans.

PUSO NG SAGING PATTIES

If you have tried our puso ng saging balls, you will surely love this another amazing banana blossom recipe. Banana blossom patty is the new trend in vegetarian cooking. Aside from the usual ginisang puso ng saging, these banana blossoms are now incorporated to more and more usual dishes like burgers, meatballs and many more. It can be used in a lot of vegetable dishes or use as a meat alternative, as used in this recipe.

I have some vegetarian friends from which I learn new veggie ideas. One of the dishes is this banana blossom patties. I really like preparing veggie dishes especially for my nieces and nephews. They all eat vegetables but they some of them were picky eaters in some occasions especially when not familiar with the food.

We have some banana plants outside our backyard, and our banana blossoms are simply harvested rather than bought from the market. No dish is better than one prepared from freshly-harvested ingredients. Harvest time for banana blossom is rare so I prepare banana blossom dishes only when it is available.

I served ginisang puso ng saging once to my nieces and nephews but they only ate a little. So for the next banana blossom harvest time, I made sure to make them eat and enjoy a lot of banana blossoms. One of my vegetarian friends told me to hide the blossoms in a patty and serve them as a burger. And with that idea, I came into this recipe.

I served my banana blossom patties to my nieces and nephews and they didn’t even notice the taste difference. One of them even added two patties in his burger! If your child is a picky eater or simply do not want to eat vegetables, using this recipe is a great hack.

HOW TO MAKE PUSO NG SAGING PATTIES

Making puso ng saging patties is very easy. All you needed to do is to prepare the banana heart and fingers and the rest of the steps are smooth. To prepare the banana blossom, start by cutting the ends near the stalk. Also, remove the red layers. These are the matured ones. They are not advisable to use since they are dry and a bit chewy when cooked.

While removing the red layers, you might notice some small banana fingers. Do you know that these are super baby bananas? Yes! These are what your favorite bananas look like before they grow into the yellow ripe fruit you know. You can include these banana fingers in the patties or use them in other dishes like paksiw.

Once you have reached the white layers or the young part of the banana blossom, remove the core. This will much be easier when you slice the blossom into quarters to reveal the core. Simply slice the core out and your banana blossom is done. Banana blossoms darken quickly so make sure to soak them in water while cutting.

Boil these banana blossoms and fingers. Then, chop them into small bits. If you’re dealing with a large batch, I suggest using an easy chopper to make things easier and faster.

After this step, you may use the bits like any other ingredient of a regular patty. Take note to squeeze the liquid out of the bits before using so your patty mixture will not be flowy. To make the patties, simply combine all ingredients into a bowl and then fry them in small patties. Your fried puso ng saging patties is done. Enjoy your banana blossom patties with a bed of hot steaming rice. Make sure to serve a dipping sauce on the side!

I like these patties best in burgers. To make a banana blossom burger, simply toast a big bun and arrange some fresh tomatoes, lettuce and onions in it. Add your banana blossom patties and your burger is done! You can make as many layers as you want! Banana blossom burger tower sounds really great!

Banana blossom

Banana blossom: the next vegan food star with the texture of fish

Sainsbury’s is to include the flower, which hails from south-east Asia, in its ready meals

Following on from beetroot burgers and jackfruit curries, the next star of the vegan “meat” world hails from the gardens of south-east Asia and looks somewhat like an artichoke.

Banana blossom, also known as a “banana heart”, is a fleshy, purple-skinned flower, shaped like a tear, which grows at the end of a banana fruit cluster. Traditionally used in south-east Asian and Indian cooking, it can also be eaten raw and its chunky, flaky texture makes it an ideal substitute for fish.

Sainsbury’s, which will be rolling out a series of plant-based meals later this year, is to include banana blossom in its ready meals in the hope the flower will catch on among a burgeoning population of shoppers looking for meat-free alternatives.

Alexa Masterson-Jones, the trends and innovation manager at Sainsbury’s, said: “I was in a restaurant called Little Kolkata [in London] with my team, and we ordered a banana blossom kofta.

“When it arrived, we thought they had mistakenly given us a lamb kofta, because it tasted so meaty. We thought this was an amazing new ingredient, but a colleague, Jay, who grew up in Kolkata, said ‘When I was growing up, we grew banana blossom at the bottom of the garden’.”

Masterson-Jones researched recipes and cooking techniques, and even spoke to Jay’s mother for inspiration. “Traditionally, it was never used as a meat alternative, but as a way to get more vegetables into dishes,” she said. Now, fresh banana blossom has started to appear in greengrocers, she added.

One in eight Britons are now vegetarian or vegan , according to research by Waitrose, and about 22 million people identify as “flexitarians” – people who eat meat but want to reduce their consumption. Supermarkets are increasing their vegan lines , from “ham” to “goujons” and “meatballs” to “burgers” made from soya, seitan, tempeh and Quorn.

Waitrose is to add a further 10 lines in April to its existing range of 65 products, including a seitan and mushroom burger. Marks & Spencer’s Plant Kitchen is a vegan range of 60 products including soya-based nuggets, cauliflower popcorn and the first vegan coleslaw.

With plant-based alternatives, there are two camps: those looking for alternative proteins such as pea and soya, and those who opt for ingredients including banana blossom that are nutritious and fibrous, but are not going to provide the same protein content as meat.

“Different vegetables have their own unique structural properties, so do better jobs at replicating different things. For example, the mushrooms we use in our Shroomdogs do a great job at emulating that sausage-like texture, while jackfruit is great at replicating pulled pork,” said Masterton-Jones.

Banana blossom has “quite a neutral flavour, so it absorbs flavours really well. We’ve been soaking it in kombu and wrapping it in nori, to put that fishy flavour through it, and created a battered cod-esque fillet,” she said. As banana blossom is fibrous, it can stand a lot of seasoning. “We’ve been stir-frying it, putting it in dumplings and croquettes, and we’ve found that if you dice it up really small, it has a nice mince texture as well,” she said.

Gizzi Erskine , the chef and co-founder of Filth, a soya mince burger restaurant in London, said: “We’re led to believe that meat is the only way to get high-quality proteins, and we know that’s not the case.

“People are now wanting to broaden their knowledge about choosing sustainable food options, and they know they can get the same nutrition from meat-free proteins.”

At the Thai restaurant Supawan in London, try the Yum Hua Plee salad. Presented in a teardrop purple leaf, it is chopped up into an almost mince-like state and has a surprisingly meaty texture, albeit slightly stringy. Some say it tastes like artichoke, but here it seems more of a vehicle than having its own identity, with the chilli and spices giving it heat and sharpness.

The London chip shop Sutton and Sons serves a lightly pickled artichoke resemblance. It certainly looks like the real deal, but does quite have the flaky texture on cutting. Having been marinated in seaweed and samphire, this is probably the closest you will get to the flavour of fish.

Burger Restaurant Business

Are you about starting a burger restaurant? If YES, here’s a complete sample burger restaurant business plan template & feasibility report you can use for FREE to get started .

Okay, so we have considered all the requirements for starting a burger restaurant. We have analyzed and drafted a sample burger restaurant marketing plan backed up by actionable guerrilla marketing ideas for burger restaurants. So let’s proceed to the business planning section.

Why Start a Burger Restaurant Business?

Generally, burger restaurants are chain and franchised restaurants that mainly sell burgers but may also sell alcoholic and other beverages. Burger restaurant formats range from fast-food to full-service. Right from the beginning, burgers have been a staple American snack.

Burger restaurants don’t need to make anything other than really good burgers and really good fries. They are quite easy to make and don’t take much time to get ready. All you need is meat, buns, and fresh ingredients and you can make a wonderful burger in minutes, while other restaurants may need several minutes to prepare and serve their dishes.

Within the years, burger restaurants have improved. The days of simple cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, and ketchup has long gone.

The industry is currently relishing an era of gourmet burgers and endless flavour profiles. So, just because you’re running a burger restaurant doesn’t mean that your food should be plain or simple. Most burger places today offer special sauces, gourmet toppings, and unexpected combinations.

This is indeed a business you should consider if you’re looking to venture into the food industry. With a burger business, you don’t have to worry about limiting your market to only meat lovers as there are many excellent veggie patties hitting menus everywhere that will please any veggie-lover out there.

In this modern age, it is very common to see lamb burgers, pork burgers, and even bison burgers. People who don’t eat beef can try a juicy chicken burger; if you’re pescatarian, you’ll love a salmon burger. Irrespective of your dietary restriction, there is a burger that comfortably suits your appeal. Read on as we put together a sample business plan for a burger restaurant.

A Sample Burger Restaurant Business Plan Template

1. industry overview.

The burger industry of this modern era is nothing near the industry some two decades back. Hamburger franchises have spread across the united states and have continued to explore innovative ways to turn their customers into loyal burger-fanatics.

But when it comes to a good hamburger, Americans are known to be very careful and selective. A report has it that 75% of burger-lovers rank the quality of the meat as the first or second most important attribute to their burger. Second in line were toppings, ranked either first or second place by 42% of consumers.

Although the price and affordability of the burger is considered, high-quality ingredients are still very important in producing a successful burger business. Americans to a very large extent live on burgers and are known to go for the best.

Statistics show that nearly 80% of consumers eat at fast food restaurants at least once a month, and 34% of kids in the US eat fast food every day – and that’s not including the massive number of people eating at fast casual restaurants.

Burger in the United States is now seen a food that represents patriotism and festivity. They are always present at large family gatherings, particularly Fourth of July and Memorial Day celebrations. Given the timelessness of this All-American classic, it’s no wonder that the hamburger stands as one of the few “recession-proof” foods in the United States.

But note that with America’s fight against obesity, e-coli concerns, mad cow disease, and the recent go-green campaign, the burger industry has its own share of challenges and threats. Yet statistics has it that Americans tastes are becoming more diverse and varied.

Burger has always remained top in the minds of Americans, and the reason for this longevity is most times attributed to its widespread appeal. Burgers are affordable, portable, and customizable and they can be served gourmet-style or as a rustic yet classic go-to food.

6. SWOT Analysis

Our goal at Star Burger is to create a unique restaurant that sees to the need of the people. We also decided to get our SWOT Analysis, which brings to light our strengths and threats in the industry. We at Star Burger hired a business consultant to do this analysis for us because we believe an external firm will not compromise the information and chances of Star Burger in the Industry.

We were able to note our business strengths, weakness, opportunities and also the threats that we are likely going to be exposed to in the industry and our business location. Clearly summarized below is the result of our SWOT Analysis;

Our detailed SWOT analysis has identified three keys that will be instrumental to our success at Star Burger. First and foremost, our design and implementation of strict financial controls, which will be very crucial, since the restaurant industry is quite competitive.

Secondly, we will be offering high-quality fresh and healthy food to clearly stand out from our competition in San Diego. We have already put in place effective, targeted marketing campaigns to support the opening of the restaurant.

Our weakness according to the SWOT analysis will be the time it will take the people of San Diego to know where we are and what we offer.

People go about their daily activities and most times tend not to discover the new business in town unless the business establishes a direct marketing Plan. We at Star Burger plan to start advertising even before we open up our shops, at least to make sure that our brand is known.

  • Opportunities

Indeed the opportunities available to Star Burger are limitless. The food and restaurant industry is a recession-proof industry that will always keep growing because people will always want food as it helps keep us alive and sane. People may no always have the time to cook due to their schedule, and will always decide to grab a burger and a cup of lemonade or coffee on their way to work.

Our threat at Star Burger is the fact that we are competing with already established restaurants in San Diego, California, and also there are other entrepreneurs who are likely going to launch similar business within the location of our business.

But with our unique workforce and plans, we have all it takes to dominate the industry and take up enough market share.

7. MARKET ANALYSIS

  • Market Trend

Burgers in this new age are indulgent and upscale with a variety of toppings, including goat cheese, truffle oil, foie gras, aolis, marmalades, sautéed spinach, havarti, candied bacon and other healthy and exotic toppings. Burger blends are all the rage extending beyond traditional chuck, to include short rib, brisket, oxtail, rib eye, flank and much more.

A report has it that 2018 is the year for everything from giant, premium burgers to sliders and mini-portions, from bold Mexican and Asian flavours to Korean, Greek, Cajun, and more. International flavours are hot and growing, and the burger is the perfect vehicle to test drive and transport many flavours.

Report also has it that restaurants are beefing up menu language to highlight protein grams and adding protein topper boosters such as pastrami, bacon and pepperoni, as well as including lettuce wrapped options to increase the protein to carb ratio.

In line with the trend for more protein, eggs are topping off many burgers for 2018. Also the largest age segment of the American population is driving burger trends now and certainly into the future with their desire for global flavours, snack-sized portions (sliders), and healthy options and toppings.

From emphasizing and bolstering “protein” on menus, consumer geared messaging is also focused on other health oriented topics and features, including grass fed, organic, natural, gluten free, naked (no bun), and more.

We at Star Burger plan to always work with customers on additional blends, which can include anything. Burger epitomizes the perfect vehicle to adapt to new trends and international flavours. As a business’s that wants to become a market leader in the United States, we will focus our energy at working with customers to develop new blends and visions

8. Our Target Market

Our plan at Star Burger is to focus on two different market audiences: Commuters and Captive Consumers. We have taken our time to strategically design our business to access both of these markets. Commuters are defined as any one or more individuals in a motorized vehicle traveling from point “A” to point “B.”

Star Burger’s greatest concentration will be on commuters heading to or from work, or those out on their lunch break. While our Captive Consumers market audience would include those who are tethered to a campus environment, or in a restricted entry environment that does not give the right to free movement.

This will include high school and college campuses, where there is limited time between classes, and corporate campuses where the same time constraints are involved like special events–such as carnivals, fairs or festivals–where there is an admission price to enter the gate, but exiting would mean another admission fee, or where refreshments are an integral part of the festivities.

Our target market at Star Burger will also be the mobile individual who has more money than time, and excellent taste in choice of food, but no time to prepare them.

Our competitive advantage

Our competitions at Star Burger exist in many forms. They include fast food that takes the form of the traditional restaurants like McDonald’s, Burger King, and Wendy’s, as well as healthier alternatives like Subway . There are also three different delis located in San Diego that serve deli style sandwiches. These delis serve very basic, standard deli fare; generally sliced deli meats.

But we at Star Burger know that with the unique offerings we bring, we can dominate the market especially with a business that can provide a substantial value proposition where a customer does not have to find a parking place, exit the vehicle, stand in line to order, wait for the burger to be produced, pay a premium price for average product, find a place to sit, clean up the previous customer’s mess, then enjoy their lemonade or coffee… That’s if they have much time to spend.

Star Burger business concept is to establish a restaurant that gives a customer the opportunity to drive up, place the order, receive a high quality product at a competitive price, and drive away, without spending much time and energy. We at Star Burger plan to provide an important community value for patronizing our business.

For every purchase a customer makes from us, we plan to donate up to 6% of the sale to the local charity selected by the customer.

9. SALES AND MARKETING STRATEGY

  • Sources of Income

Star Burger is a new restaurant with a unique plan to achieve success and become an industry leader. That is why we will be providing our products in the most convenient and efficient way available–either at one of our two-sided Drive-through shops, or at one of our Mobile Restaurant.

This will give us an advantage over our competitors because customers won’t need to find a parking place, wait in a long line, jockey for a seat, and clean up the mess left by a previous patron. Our goal at Star Burger is to provide enough income to be able to run our business and still move on with our charity aspect. We plan to generate income by offering the following products to the people of San Diego:

10. Sales Forecast

Star Burger will open its doors for business by having two Drive-through locations in operation. We plan to open our first location in the second month of this plan and be fully operational beginning on the 1st day of November, and our second Drive-through will open six months later.

We will also add two more Drive-through locations in our second year and, and an additional seven Drive-through facilities in our third year. We at Star Burger plan to deploy one mobile unit in the fourth quarter of the first fiscal year. Deploy a second and a third mobile unit within our second fiscal year.

Using our detailed research and analysis, we expect to boost revenue from the commerce portion of our website, where it will sell Star Burger t-shirts, sweatshirts, insulated lemonade mugs, pre-packaged coffee beans, and other premium items. Although we are not expecting this to be a significant profit centre immediately, but it is a major part of the marketing plan.

We at Star Burger estimate that our total first year sales should reach $399,678. Our second year will see sales increase to $1,085,430. The third year, with the addition of such a significant number of outlets, we will see sales increase to $3,765,215.

  • Marketing Strategy and Sales Strategy

With so many burger franchises and independent restaurants already open, marketing is one of the most important aspects of opening a burger restaurant. We at Star Burger understand this, which is why we will be placing our Drive-through stands in business locations of very high visibility and great ease of access.

Our Restaurants and stands will be located on high traffic commuter routes and close to shopping facilities so as to attract customers going to or from work, or while they are out for lunch, or on a shopping expedition. Our Drive-through will be very simple, astounding, and eye-catching.

We also plan to implement a low cost advertising/promotion campaign which could involve drive-time radio, but not much more. Star Burger will also establish good business relationships with schools, charities and corporations to provide significant free publicity because of our community support program.

We believe that if we give out charitable contributions to these institutions, they will get the word out to their students/faculty/employees/partners about Star Burger.

We also plan to leverage the use of word of mouth advertising method, which is the greatest advertising program any business organisation can use. The media in San Diego will be more than willing to promote the charitable parts of Star Burger and give us the opportunity for more exposure each moment Star Burger contributes to charity.

The internet is a powerful marketing tool we at Star Burger cannot afford to overlook. We plan to create an optimized website to capture local searches and also establish a strong social media presence to easily boost sales. When we first open, we plan to create a local press release, run grand opening specials to draw in potential customers, and even invite local food bloggers to come try a free meal in exchange for a review.

11. Publicity and Advertising Strategy

Our plan at Star Burger is to gather enough brand awareness to leverage the product line into other regions and gain inquiries from potential inventors. To achieve this goal, we plan to do the following;

  • Star Burger will spend $1,200 per month on public relations services for the next year. We intended to build awareness and carry out product information insertions, reviews, etc. We believe that a school fundraising program or our other charity programs will generate a fair amount of publicity on its own and will, perhaps, minimize–or even eliminate–the need for a publicist.
  • Star Burger will also spend $800 per month concentrating on drive time Radio advertising. We plan to experiment with different stations, keeping careful track of results. As with the school fundraising program, we expect the stand and signage to be a substantial portion of our advertising.
  • List our business on yellow pages ads (local directories)
  • Leverage on the internet to promote our business
  • Engage direct marketing approach
  • Encourage word of mouth marketing from loyal and satisfied clients

12. Our Pricing Strategy

We haven’t gone back on our promise to leave no stone unturned in our quest to achieve our business goal. We at Star Burger have put plans in place to boost our income, which may include posting specials on high-profit items at the drive-up window.

We also plan to give out free burger coupons to those who have purchased a certain number of burgers or something similar.

Our management have been able to develop window sales techniques such as our sellers asking if the customer would like a new flavour or toppings with any drink of their choice. We believe that our pricing will be comparable to the competition in the market, but with the value-added feature of immediate, drive-through service and convenience.

  • Payment Options

Our payment options at Star Burger will be all inclusive and acceptable because we understand that different people prefer different payment options. Here are the payment options that we will make available to our clients;

  • Payment by cash
  • Payment via Point of Sale (POS) Machine
  • Payment via online bank transfer (online payment portal)
  • Payment via Mobile money

We have also chosen banking platforms that will help us achieve our plans with little or no issues. Our bank account numbers will be made available on our website and promotional materials to clients who may want to deposit cash or make online transfer for our service.

13. Startup Expenditure (Budget)

First and foremost, many factors in our modern America will decide the amount we will need to successfully launch Star Burger. These factors may include our location, the size of the business we want to start i.e. the number of outlets/stands et al, and of course the state of the economy as at when we intend starting the business.

We at Star Burger have conducted an extensive research and have come up with how we intend to spend our startup capital, and they include;

  • The Fee for registering the business in the United States – $750
  • The budget for legal fees, insurance, permits and license – $30, 000
  • The amount needed to build a two standard shop and renovation of the facility inclusive – $60,000
  • The Cost for the purchase of kitchen / production equipment and gadgets (industrial ovens, fridges, smoke detector, TVs, microwave oven, mugs, Foils, Sound System, tables and chairs et al) – $25,000
  • The Cost for supply of bread and other inventories for a month – $120,000
  • The Cost of Launching a Website – $600
  • The cost opening party – $5,000
  • Additional Expenditure (Business cards, Signage, Adverts and Promotions et al) – $100,000

Going by the report from our research and feasibility studies, we will need an average of $350,000 to start Star Burger.

  • Generating Startup Capital for Star Burger

Star Burger will be established as a Limited Liability Company with Sampson and Nicky Shepard as its owners. This couple has a combined 25 years’ experience in the food and burger industry, and they hope to build a successful business. We hope to raise our startup fund through the following ways;

  • Generate part of the start – up capital from personal savings and sell of stocks
  • Source for soft loans from family members and friends
  • Generate fund from Angel Investors

Note : We have been able to raise $200,000 from the personal savings of our founders and we are almost at the verge of completing the money needed as capital from a reliable Angel investor with an eye for startup businesses.

14. Sustainability and Expansion Strategy

We at Star Burger believe that as time and seasons change, we will be offering products that will enhance sales and satisfy our customers’ desires. We also plan that during summer months, we will subsidize frozen drinks like lemonade, as well as soft drinks, and other cold beverages.

We at Star Burger have taken our time to research our local regulatory agencies and what licenses we need. These requirements we believe will vary by location, but we have a strong relationship through Mr. Sampson Shepard with the state chamber of commerce and health department and we plan to stay on the right side of the law.

We have put plans in place to get our business license, which legally allows us to make sales and collect sales tax, and a food handling certification, which we have acquired. We have also obtained the needed permits for construction and we are also expecting an inspection from the health department.

We at Star Burger also understand the importance of insurance for our business. We have contracted an insurance lawyer to help us get property insurance, which will help protect our building and surrounding property, providing coverage for fire, hail, or accidental damage.

We expect this type of policy to cover expensive commercial kitchen equipment , so we will be able to replace pieces damaged under covered circumstances.

We also plan to obtain liability insurance, as it covers legal fees and any damages that may be awarded as a result of a legal action against our business from any accidents or injuries. We will also offer worker’s compensation insurance to provide peace of mind to both the management and our employees, as it helps cover medical bills that may arise from employee injuries.

Our Drive-through stands will be manufactured by Lintel Construction. Our Mobile Restaurant and equipment will be supplied by Guarantee Savage.  Star Burger computer equipment and Internet connectivity will be provided by Nicklaus Communications.

Banana Blossom Burger Research Paper

Banana Blossom Burger Research Paper

The hamburger is a popular food eaten worldwide, consisting of a patty placed between two slices of bread and garnished with vegetables and spices. Its origins date back to the early 1200s when Mongol soldiers used to tenderize and consume raw meat under their horse saddles. The modern hamburger was created from ground beef, and its origins are uncertain, with different stories claiming its invention. Nowadays, the hamburger industry has evolved, with franchises spread across the globe, constantly innovating to create new variations of the classic burger. In Tagaytay, a group of proponents created the Banana Heart Burger, using banana blossom and smoked fish as a substitute for meat patty, making it a nutritious option for vegetarians and health-conscious people. The puso ng saging, or banana blossom, is a rich source of energy, micronutrients, and fiber, making it a healthy addition to the burger. The proponents plan to add different flavors in the future.

Hamburger is one of the most common foods eaten around the world. It is composed of a patty put between two slices of bread and garnished with vegetables and other spices. It all started in the early 1200s when the Mongol army placed slabs of lamb and mutton under their horse saddles as they rode into battle. After the meat was tenderized by the saddle and the back of the horse, they would consume it raw, as if it were an uncooked beef patty. This strange but practical method eventually developed into the creation of modern ground beef. Now that you have ground beef, you know what has to come next: the hamburger.

Some believe that the hamburger came from a meatball stand owner who flattened his meatballs between two slices of bread. He then called his new on-the-go creation “Charlie’s Hamburgers”. Others believe that the hamburger originated from a hotdog vendor who decided to substitute their hotdogs for beef, naming this invention the “hamburger” after their location, Hamburg, New York. On the other hand, Texans believe that the burger was a reincarnation of the breakfast patty- a beef sandwich squeezed between two slices of French toast and garnished with glazed onions.

Without paying upfront

Although all of these instances have hit hamburger history, it is still uncertain which one of them is the true story behind the birth of the hamburger. However, no matter how you sliced it, the hamburger industry nowadays is nothing as it was before. Hamburger franchises have spread their ways across the nation and continue to find innovative ways to turn their customers into loyal burger-fanatics. The hamburger industry is beefin’ up for good. This competition gave the idea to the proponents to innovate the product.

They use the banana blossom or bud with smoked fish as substitute for beef patty. They chose these as the major ingredients because these are abundant in Tagaytay. Though it literally translates to “heart of banana,” puso ng saging is technically the banana blossom or bud. Known as “banana bell” in Australia, and “plantain flower” in Sri Lanka, the blossom protects the sterile male flowers of the banana plant, and is found hanging at the end of the stem that holds the banana cluster.

The actual heart of the banana is located at the center of the tree trunk. You may have heard of the folklore behind puso ng saging: it blooms during a full moon, and swallowing the sap or agimat that falls from it bestows one with superpowers. But myth is not necessarily far from fact when it comes to this crimson-colored vegetable. The puso ng saging is a rich source of energy, micronutrients, and fiber, according to health and wellness educator Maribel Jane Galang of Manila Adventist Medical Center.

Banana Heart Burger uses a homemade patty and a transformation of the common burger that we have now. The proponents decided not to change the name of the product so that the customers will easily know that the product is nutritious. The patty is not made up of meat. Instead, the proponents used banana blossom and smoked fish (tinapa) as substitute for meat patty to make it more nutritious. This burger is very suitable for vegetarians and health conscious people. They also consider adding different flavors in the near future.

Moscow International Business Center: The Latest Architecture and News

Moscow's high rise bohemia: the international business district with no business.

Moscow's High Rise Bohemia: The International Business District With No Business - Featured Image

The Moscow International Business Center (Also known as Moskva-City ) was meant to be Russia ’s ticket into the Western world. First conceived in 1992, the district at the edge of Moscow’s city center is intended to contain up to 300,000 inhabitants, employees and visitors at any given moment and, when completed, will house over 4 million square meters of prime retail, hotel and office space to create what the Russian government desired most from this project: an enormous financial district that could dwarf London’s Canary Wharf and challenge Manhattan . Twenty three years later though, Moscow-based real estate company Blackwood estimates that as much as 45% of this new space is entirely vacant and rents have plummeted far below the average for the rest of Moscow. The only press Moskva-City is attracting is for tenants like the High Level Hostel , a hostel catering to backpackers and other asset-poor tourists on the 43rd floor of the Imperia Tower , with prices starting at $25.50 for a bed in a six-person room. This is not the glittering world of western high finance that was envisioned back in the post-Soviet 90s; but what has it become instead?

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

  • This museum is fun for both adults and children!
  • Admission is USD $4.00

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

Moscow-City – The Moscow International Business Center

  • 3 years ago

The Moscow Intenational Business Center

Moscow-City is an iconic location for life and work in Russia’s capital. Enormous skyscrapers, business centers, the best restaurants and retail spaces – all this is concentrated in one place. The ultramodern Moscow-City towers are truly striking in their outward appearance, and the layout of the apartments inside and the fantastic views that can be seen from the higher floors are nothing short of impressive.

This skyscraper compound, often referred to as Moskva-City, is the Russian take on Manhattan, where businessmen strike multi-million dollar deals daily while ordinary life goes on next door. Its state of the art spaces offer the ultimate convenience. The infrastructure of this business district is so well-developed that anyone can find something interesting for themselves here: from residential apartments to boutiques, clubs, exhibitions and more.

When the foundations for the Moscow-City skyscrapers were laid, a special kind of concrete was used, the properties of which are amplified by many times compared to standard concrete. Even in the event of a plane crashing into one of the buildings, the structural integrity of the towers will be preserved.

The architects of the Moscow-City Business Center have created a unique locality that has integrated into itself the hub of the capital’s business life and a whole ensemble of historical monuments. Anyone can admire the beauty of these skyscrapers from within or without the compound. There are also a number of apartments for sale or rent available in the MIBC itself. But first, let’s have a look at some more interesting facts about the financial core of Russia’s capital.

  • 1 How It All Began
  • 2.1 Moscow-City Central Core
  • 2.2 Tower 2000
  • 2.3 Evolution Tower
  • 2.4 Imperia Tower
  • 2.5 Moscow Tower and St. Petersburg Tower
  • 2.6 Steel Peak Tower
  • 2.7 Federation Tower
  • 2.8 Mercury City Tower
  • 2.9 OKO Tower Complex
  • 3.1 Afimall City Shopping Center
  • 3.2 Bagration Bridge
  • 3.3 Expocentre Fairgrounds
  • 4 Renting and Buying Real Estate in Moscow-City

How It All Began

The history of Moscow-City goes all the way back to 1992. The government of Moscow at the time wanted to bring into existence its own skyscrapers like the ones in London or New York. And the idea caught on. In 1992 the project for the construction of the huge “Moscow-City” MIBC compound was enthusiastically approved, kick-starting the painstaking preparatory works. The original intention was that the skyscrapers would only house office space. However, as time went on, the towers began to welcome in ordinary residents who wanted to live on the territory of this business and finance hub.

Moscow-City is undoubtedly a city within a city. Its grandeur is mind-boggling. It is perfect in every way: from location to infrastructure. And today, anyone can get a feel of the atmosphere of the “capital city” of Russia’s business world – many of the apartments in Moscow-City are available for rent. Any citizen of Russia and even nationals of other countries can make use of these offers.

What It’s Like in 2021

Today Moscow-City is not just a magnificent and fascinating sight, but also a real hub for the work, life and leisure of thousands. Its infrastructure is organized in such a way that there is no need to leave the territory of the “city within a city” at all. This business district contains everything one may need for work and recreation. And if one does decide to venture out into the larger metropolis, the MIBC’s three subway stations make this remarkably simple to do.

Moscow-City stands on the Presnenskaya Embankment . Each of the buildings in the district has a name, which simplifies its identification. Some of the buildings form complexes that are united under one name, such as the Neva Towers and the Naberezhnaya Tower complex of two skyscrapers and one high rise. There are a total of 16 towers in the MIBC, of which the most popular are:

  • Moscow-City Central Core;
  • Tower 2000;
  • Evolution Tower;
  • Imperia Tower;
  • City of Capitals (Moscow Tower and St. Petersburg Tower);
  • Steel Peak Tower;
  • Federation Tower;
  • Mercury City Tower;
  • OKO Tower Complex.

Moscow-City Central Core

This is the most complex building within the MIBC compound. Its total floor area is a whopping 1 476 378 sqft (450 000 m²). It consists of two massive parts, each of which boasts a truly impressive infrastructure. The underground part includes 3 Moscow Metro stations, a parking lot for automobiles and a shopping mall. The aboveground part houses a concert hall and a hotel.

Tower 2000 is a skyscraper having 34 stories. Its total floor area is 200 318 sqft (61 057 m²), most of which is office space. The key feature of this skyscraper is its direct connection to the Bagration Bridge, which has its own shopping arcade. The tower has everything one may need while working here, including a large parking lot and several restaurants.

Evolution Tower

This elegant structure is 836 feet (255 m) high – that’s a whole 54 stories! The total floor area here is 554 462 sqft (169 000 m²). The Evolution Tower’s key feature is that it has its own Wedding Hall. This skyscraper houses large office spaces, a parking lot and several restaurants.

Imperia Tower

MIBC’s Imperia Tower is the undeniable focal point of the MIBC’s business life. Its height is 784 feet (239 m), which means one can hold conferences and resolve key business matters on the 59 th floor! And that really is amazing! The tower has everything: offices, hotels, restaurants and parking lots. But if you want a truly unforgettable experience, visit the viewing platform! It is situated on the 58 th floor and a simply astounding view of Moscow can be seen from it.

Moscow Tower and St. Petersburg Tower

The Moscow and St. Petersburg Towers are the chief representatives of the MIBC. The Moscow Tower has 76 stories and is 990 feet (302 m) high, while the St. Petersburg Tower has 65 stories and stands 843 feet (257 m) tall. Both towers offer fantastic views of the capital city.

Most of the floors of these two skyscrapers are taken up by luxurious sky apartments. There are also several recreational and entertainment centers, office spaces, restaurants, etc.

Steel Peak Tower

Also known as the Eurasia Tower of Moscow-City, this supertall skyscraper has a total of 680 912 sqft (207 542 m²) of floor space. Most of this is taken up by offices, and the rest – by residential quarters (around 65 616 sqft or 20 000 m²). The tower also houses a number of the greatest restaurants, studios and shopping centers.

Federation Tower

The Federation Tower is a complex of two skyscrapers, known as Tower East and Tower West. Tower East is the second highest building in Europe (the first is a skyscraper recently erected in the city of St. Petersburg). Its height is a colossal 1 223 feet (373 m) and that makes 95 stories! Tower West, on the other hand, is noticeably shorter at 794 feet (242 m).

The Federation Tower is a multifunctional complex.

Mercury City Tower

The Mercury City Tower skyscraper is widely known as one of the tallest buildings in Europe. Its height is 1 112 feet (339 m) and it has 75 stories. It is multifunctional by concept, holding within its walls shopping centers, offices and all kinds of other spaces. It is also possible to rent apartments here.

OKO Tower Complex

The OKO Tower Complex consists of two towers – the North Tower (49 stories and 803 ft or 245 m in height) and the South Tower (85 stories and 1 155 ft or 352 m in height).

Each of the MIBC’s tower complexes has its own recreational and entertainment areas, restaurants and parking lots. The top floors of most of these buildings contain luxurious fully-furnished apartments. At night, the towers shine with bright lights, while inside them the panoramic windows reveal astounding views of Moscow. This breathtaking view of the capital of Russia is why visiting Moscow-City is a must!

What Not to Miss

There are many interesting landmarks within the Moscow-City compound, but three of them are truly deserving of special attention:

  • The Afimall City Shopping Center;
  • The Bagration Bridge with two galleries and a shopping arcade;
  • The Expocentre Fairgrounds.

Afimall City Shopping Center

The Afimall City Shopping and Entertainment Center is located in Moscow-City’s Central Core. It is divided into 4 zones, each with its own theme – one for every season of the year. The shopping center houses the biggest indoor fountain found worldwide. The height of this watery wonder is 118 feet or 36 meters.

The shopping and entertainment center contains everything one might expect from one of the largest centers of its kind:

  • Retail brand stores;
  • Exhibitions;
  • Game rooms;
  • and Restaurants.

The main recreational space is roofed with a giant transparent dome, which is an impressive sight to behold.

Bagration Bridge

Bagration Bridge with its upper and lower galleries has a shopping center all of its own and was the first structure to be built as part of the Moscow-City business district. Its lower gallery is a shopping arcade and its upper gallery is an open-air viewing platform with a spectacular view of the MIBC and the Moskva River. The hall of the bridge houses the 23 foot tall sculpture called “Tree of Life”. Having gone through the bridge via either one of its two galleries, a pedestrian would find themselves standing right on the Kutuzovsky Prospekt.

Expocentre Fairgrounds

The Expocentre Fairgrounds exhibition venue is located at the very heart of the capital. The first exhibition held at the Expocentre happened all the way back in 1959, much earlier than the MIBC was erected. Today it is the venue of many interesting events.

Exhibitions with very diverse themes are regularly held at this complex. An up-to-date schedule can be found on the official webpage of the Expocentre. The events can be free or fixed-price entry, depending on their type.
