Behind the Meaning of the Wide-Eyed Hopeful “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)” by George Harrison

by Jacob Uitti May 31, 2023, 9:57 am

George Harrison, former Beatle, and solo artist, was nothing if not idealistic. For an example of this, look no further than his 1973 song “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth),” a song that was also a success, hitting No. 1 in the U.S.

The sound, which plays as if it was born on an island vacation, is driven by acoustic guitars, nostalgic guitars, and Harrison’s loving voice. In the song, Harrison expresses his desire for a loving, peaceful life. What else could be better?

Let’s dive into the song’s meaning and history below.

The Meaning

The song opens with Harrison wishing for an existence seemingly outside of the human form. He sings, Give me love, give me love, give me peace on earth / Give me light, give me life, keep me free from birth.

Give me hope Help me cope with this heavy load Trying to touch and reach you with Heart and soul

Om My Lord Please take hold of my hand That I might understand you Won’t you please Oh, won’t you?

In the end, the song is one asking for help and guidance as much as it is a confident piece of work from one of the world’s most acclaimed artists.

Spirituality and Idealism

Known as perhaps the most idealistic Beatle, Harrison wrote “Give Me Love” in the early 1970s after the Fab Four had broken up. At the same time, he was helping refugees of the Bangladesh Liberation War, putting on two benefit concerts in New York City, along with a live album and concert film.

With all of this on his plate, Harrison was working on his then-forthcoming solo album, Living in the Material World , which included “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth).” Ever the searcher, Harrison was also diving into Hindu spirituality. Armed with this sense of inner peace and spiritual devotion, Harrison wrote a number of songs quickly, from “My Sweet Lord” to “What Is Life.”

“Sometimes you open your mouth and you don’t know what you are going to say, and whatever comes out is the starting point,” said Harrison in his autobiography, I, Me Mine . “If that happens and you are lucky, it can usually be turned into a song. This song is a prayer and personal statement between me, the Lord, and whoever likes it.’

Living in the Material World

Along with his own busy schedule, Harrison was beginning to grow frustrated with music producer Phil Spector, who wasn’t showing up for meetings or recordings. That led Harrison to produce the album alone.

He recorded the song in 1972 with Phil McDonald, a former engineer for the Beatles. While Spector is known for his big “wall of sound” approach to recording, “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace)” is more spare and intentional. The listener hears it as if sitting reclined on a hammock and Harrison comes up with a ukulele or acoustic guitar and begins to play. It sounds almost like a tall glass of pineapple juice, with a little slide guitar-shaped straw.

George Harrison Give Me Love

“Sometimes you open your mouth and you don’t know what you are going to say, and whatever comes out is the starting point. If that happens and you are lucky, it can usually be turned into a song. This song is a prayer and personal statement between me, the Lord, and whoever likes it.” So said George Harrison about one of his most popular songs, “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth),” which served as both the opening track and the lead single from his 1973 album, Living in the Material World .

George had been busy working on the release of the Concert for Bangladesh album and film, and so he did not start work on his follow-up to All Things Must Pass until midway through 1972. Initially, George had intended to work with Phil Spector but his unreliability added to the delays until, finally, Harrison decided to press ahead and produce the record himself.

Whereas his previous album had featured a large cast of musicians, it was a much smaller group that George assembled to record the song “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)” in the autumn of 1972. Aside from George’s wonderful slide guitar playing that he added early in 1973, it’s pianist Nicky Hopkins that shines on the recording. The rest of the musicians on the song are former Spooky Tooth organist Gary Wright, old friend Klaus Voormann on bass, and Jim Keltner plays drums

‘rock ‘n’ roll’: when john lennon returned to his roots.

It’s easy to hear why “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)” was instantly popular and has remained one of George’s most enduring songs. It is deceptively simple, despite the complexity in both the sounds and the sentiments expressed in his lyrics. Each instrument is perfectly placed in the mix. Wright’s organ is the bed, Keltner’s drumming gives it a jaunty yet relaxed vibe, while Hopkins, one of the most admired rock pianists of his generation, is the perfect foil to George’s brilliant slide guitar frills and solo.

Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)

“Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)” was released on May 7, 1973, in the US and two weeks later in the UK. It became the highest new entry of the week, at No.59, on the Billboard chart of May 19; those trailing in its wake included, at No.71 “Shambala” by Three Dog Night, Paul Simon’s “Kodachrome” at No.82, and two places lower, Pink Floyd’s “Money.” Six weeks after it entered the chart George knocked Paul McCartney and Wings ‘ “My Love” from the top of the Billboard Hot 100; the only occasion that two former Beatles held the top two chart positions in America.

It also reached the top ten in Britain and Canada, and in other singles charts around the world. Capitol Records, who distributed Apple Records in America, mastered the single to run at a slightly faster speed than the album version. In their view, the slightly faster version would sound better on the radio.

George Harrison performed “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)” at every concert during his rare tours as a solo artist, and a live version was included on his 1992 album Live in Japan . Cover versions have been recorded by Elliott Smith , Ron Sexsmith, Sting , James Taylor, and Elton John among others.

George’s music is so inspirational. My band performed Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth) in a very slow, James-Tayloresque ballad type way, with an undercurrent of a melodic bass, with the house-lights dimmed, and only candles ablaze to light the room. Standing-o from the audience. Meanwhile, years later, at George’s passing, I would write Hari’s On His Way (after George’s own moniker for himself), subtitled “Here Comes Stars.” At the suggestion of a fan, I sent it off to Martin Scorsese in NYC, and got ‘the’ nicest phone call from David Tedescke, Scorsese’s film editor, telling me how much he and his crew, and “Marty” really enjoyed listening to the song (and regretted they couldn’t put it in the movie). Honor of a lifetime – “hem of the garment,” as Bono would say. Anyway, here’s a link to it, as DT at Scorsese’s film company said, “It sounds more like George than George.” Always wanted Danhi or Paul, or Ringo, or Clapton, or Petty (or all of ’em together) to perform it, especially after the Concert for George in which the night really was “Here Come Stars” for you, George. Cheers…, Michael Vincent (song links: (song #3 – Hari’s On His Way – https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/radio/id281414621 and on iTunes – https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/radio/id281414621

George’s most beautiful song. I love how he hold holds the word “pleeaaaase……..take hold of my hand” for what seems like forever. This tune will always give me shivers.

Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)

‘Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)’ is the opening track on George Harrison ’s fourth solo album Living In The Material World .

We did the tracking at Apple. The songs were just cool, simple little songs, but when we got to ‘Give Me Love’, I thought to myself, ‘This is hard work, this one!’ The drums are kind of subdued, but I was playing a very busy little syncopated part, trying to play with the guitar – and George was so easy to play with. When we finally got the take, I remember listening and thinking, ‘I wouldn’t have got away with that with anybody else.’ Any other producer would probably have said, ‘OK, that’s cool, now let’s have a proper backbeat and nail it down.’

The release

‘Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)’ was Harrison’s first single since ‘Bangla Desh’ in July 1971. Its release was delayed to make way for The Beatles’ compilations 1962-1966 and 1967-1970 , and Wings’ Red Rose Speedway .

The single, with ‘Miss O’Dell’ on the b-side, was eventually issued on 7 May 1973 in the USA, and 25 May in the UK. The album Living In The Material World followed on 30 May and 22 June in the respective countries.

‘Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)’ topped the US Billboard Hot 100 for one week, and peaked at number 8 on the UK singles chart. It was also a top 10 hit in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Norway.

By the time we got back to LA we were already hearing it on the radio. One day we got into the car. It was me and my wife Cynthia, George and Pattie , and Richard Perry and Joni Mitchell. We went to the Playboy Mansion and that night in the car they were playing ‘Give Me Love’ on the radio. It blew my mind. He always said it was a little prayer. I still well up to this day when I hear it.

Live performances

Harrison performed ‘Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)’ throughout his 1974 North American tour and his 1991 Japanese tour. A recording from the latter can be heard on 1992’s Live In Japan .

It was also played during Harrison’s concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall on 6 April 1992, his only full solo show in the UK.

Jeff Lynne performed ‘Give Me Love’ during the Concert For George tribute show at the Royal Albert Hall on 29 November 2002.

How to Practice Powerful Peace

Use the goodness, strength, and skill of your will to support peace..

Posted April 12, 2022 | Reviewed by Ekua Hagan

  • Peace is a practice that every person has access to and one that improves quality of life, individually and collectively.
  • Holding peace as a way of life is not always passive. There are both contemplative and active ways of expressing peace.
  • The warrior in oneself is most effective through the intention of peace, even when called into battle.

Dorothy Firman

More than 50 years ago, an Italian psychiatrist, a colleague of Freud and Jung, wrote this: “A very important and urgent application of the use of the will is that concerning the great issue of peace and war. In my view, no amount of political agreements and treaties or of external manipulation can by itself ensure a lasting peace.”

Roberto Assagioli, the founder of psychosynthesis , goes on to note that “the effective means to change [people’s] inner attitude, both individual and collective, is the constant application of the good will. It would have the effect of a magic wand. Expressed and applied, good will automatically excludes violent conflicts and wars.” ( The Act of Will )

We are used to thinking about Will in terms of strength. Most of us get caught there, often giving ourselves a hard time when we don’t have enough “ willpower ” to slog through yet another inner or external “should." Often, that experience flips us into feeling hopeless and helpless, whether in the small world of our own private lives or the larger world of our social and global concerns.

Will is a function of strength, skill, and goodness

Our individual and collective Will has the capacity and ultimately the necessity of operating in all its aspects. Simply stated, these are strength, skill, and goodness. We have seen too many times how strong Will without goodness is a dangerous thing. Likewise, good Will, without skill, may be ineffective. But how wonderful it is to experience acting through all the aspects of the Will so that the outcome of our choices is bound deeply in goodness, negotiated through skill, and manifest through the needed strength.

As we face another international conflict, in which there are perpetrators and victims, good guys and bad guys, acts of horror and acts of courage, love, sacrifice, and more, we need to claim our own right and responsibility towards holding a powerful peace in our hearts, our minds, and our actions.

Holding peace requires strength, skill, and goodness. It requires our Will. It is all too easy to settle into a right-versus-wrong point of view, which can give us the comfort of feeling some certainty. But look at what this “comfort zone” creates: polarization, blame, exclusion, and ultimately a lack of empathy or capacity to see a larger view.

Will is not neutral, and peace is not passive

This is not, however, an invitation to be neutral. When it is time to vote, we vote for the people we think are best suited, based largely on our own deeply held values. We will also feel free to take a stand, as needed, as we are called by our deep values and life purpose to do so. This might mean writing a letter to the editor, joining in a peaceful demonstration, or giving money to causes we value. It might call us to take up arms because the cause is too great, the fight is too close, or the urgency of acting on our values is that great.

When we are called to be a warrior, all of our Will must be aligned. The warrior role may be standing up to a bully , challenging a morally unacceptable comment, speaking the truth we need to express, or even, in these oh-so-difficult days, getting out of bed to face the day with our goodness, strength, and skill. Even that is often a warrior’s task! And for some, being a warrior is a life’s path. What we all so fervently wish for is that those warriors are guided by their own wisdom and good Will, as well as their strength and skill.

Holding peace invites the best of us, no matter who we are and no matter what actions we are taking. Sitting in meditation , can we breathe peace? Is the laundry an annoying chore, or a peaceful act of living? As we vote, are we angry, afraid, self-righteous, or can we offer our ballot with peace? And if and when we take a public stand, a demonstration, a resistance, a choice to enter into the fray (whatever it may be) or give up our safety to help preserve others’, can we hold peace, even in danger?

Remember, peace is not passive. It is not surrendering or weakness. Some of our greatest visionaries have shown us the power of peace. As psychosynthesis reminds us: the good will is a magic wand. If goodness permeates our heart, mind, and actions, we can be strong, assertive , and truthful. We can take a stand. And we can rest, breathe deeply, practice self-care, and live our love.

give to me peace

This is an amazing inner truth: our good, strong, and skillful Will carries all possibilities. And as we internalize the power of peace, even in our fraught and chaotic moments—of which there are many—we will each help to build that world where peace is the bedrock.

How to build inner peace as an act of will

All easier said than done, of that I am aware. I offer three strategies to help us build inner peace as an act of Will. First, let us remind ourselves of peace, as often as we can. It is an evocative word. Let that word show up on a sticky note on the fridge, in our own inner self-talk , in the way we organize our desks so that even that reminds us of peace.

synthesis center, with permission

This invites us, as a next strategy, to meditate on peace. Maybe you’re a meditator and this is an easy next step. Maybe you are not. Meditation is as simple as taking one minute, one breath, that focuses on peace.

The last strategy is based on the actions we take. So many things are difficult. So many issues are contentious. So many people annoy us! But if my outer action is peaceful, I will be a force for good.

The Will towards peace, in its goodness, strength, and skill may well guide us to a next step that serves us all.

Pray With Me

Uplifting & inspirational prayers, verses, poems & more

A Prayer for Peace of Mind

This prayer for peace of mind asks god to relieve anxiety and stress, and grant a clarity of mind to feel at ease in one’s life. Say it in the morning or evening on a daily basis until you feel at peace.

Also, one of the best prayers for anxiety is the famous Serenity Prayer. If you’re not familiar with this prayer, I highly recommend it.

Almighty God, We bless you for our lives, we give you praise for your abundant mercy and grace we receive. We thank you for your faithfulness even though we are not that faithful to you. Lord Jesus, we ask you to give us all around peace in our mind, body, soul and spirit. We want you to heal and remove everything that is causing stress, grief, and sorrow in our lives.

Please guide our path through life and make our enemies be at peace with us. Let your peace reign in our family, at our place of work, businesses and everything we lay our hands on.

Let your angels of peace go ahead of us when we go out and stay by our side when we return. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Prayer to Heal Stress

Heavenly Father, please grant me peace of mind and calm my troubled heart. My soul is like a turbulent sea. I can’t seem to find my balance so I stumble and worry constantly. Give me the strength and clarity of mind to find my purpose and walk the path you’ve laid out for me. I trust your Love God, and know that you will heal this stress. Just as the sun rises each day against the dark of night. Please bring me clarity with the light of God.

In your name I pray, Amen.

The Biblical Foundation of Peace:

Christianity places a strong emphasis on peace, both as a state of being and a divine gift. Jesus, often called the Prince of Peace, left His followers with an inheritance of serenity and a commandment to share it with the world. In John 14:27 , He states, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."

St Francis of Assisi's Peace Prayer

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

The Rev. Ralph Abernathy (left) shakes hands with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in Montgomery, Ala., on March 22, 1956, as a big crowd of supporters cheers for King, who had just been found guilty of leading the Montgomery bus boycott.

The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s " I Have a Dream " speech, delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963, is so famous that it often eclipses his other speeches.

King's greatest contribution to the Civil Rights Movement was his oratory, says Jason Miller, an English professor at North Carolina State University who has written extensively on King's speeches.

Black History Month 2024 has begun. Here's this year's theme and other things to know

"King's first biographer was a dear friend of Dr. King's, L.D. Reddick ," Miller says. Reddick once suggested to King that maybe more marching and less speaking was needed to push the cause of civil rights forward. According to Miller, King is said to have responded, "My dear man, you never deny an artist his medium."

Miller says that in his research, he found numerous examples of King reworking and recycling old speeches. "He would rewrite them ... just to change phrasings and rhythms. And so he prepared a great deal, often 19 lines per page on a yellow legal sheet."

Often, King would write notes to himself in the margins: "what tenor and tone to deliver," Miller says.

That phrasing and an understanding of cadence were all important to the success of these speeches, according to Carolyn Calloway-Thomas, director of graduate studies at the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies at Indiana University.

King's training in the pulpit gave him a strong insight into what moves an audience, she says. "Preachers are performers. They know when to pause. How long to pause. And with what effect. And he certainly was a great user of dramatic pauses."

Here are four of King's speeches that sometimes get overlooked, plus the one he delivered the day before his 1968 assassination. Collectively, they represent historical signposts on the road to civil rights.

" Give Us the Ballot " (May 17, 1957 — Washington, D.C.)

King spoke at the Lincoln Memorial three years to the day after the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education , which struck down the "separate but equal" doctrine that had allowed segregation in public schools.

But Jim Crow persisted throughout much of the South. The yearlong Montgomery bus boycott , sparked by the arrest of Rosa Parks, had ended only months before King's speech. And the Voting Rights Act of 1965 , which sought to end disenfranchisement of Black voters, was still eight years away.

"It's a very important speech because he's talking about the importance of voting and he's responding to some of the Southern resistance to the Brown decision," says Vicki Crawford, director of the Martin Luther King Jr. Collection at Morehouse College, King's alma mater .

The speech calls out both major political parties for betraying "the cause of justice" and failing to do enough to ensure civil rights for Blacks. He accuses Democrats of "capitulating to the prejudices and undemocratic practices of the Southern Dixiecrats," referring to the party's pro-segregation wing. The Republicans, King said, had instead capitulated "to the blatant hypocrisy of right-wing, reactionary Northerners."

King speaks at a mass demonstration at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., on May 17, 1957, as civil rights leaders called on the U.S. government to put more teeth into the Supreme Court's desegregation decisions.

He also indicts Northern liberals who are "so bent on seeing all sides" that they are "neither hot nor cold, but lukewarm" in their commitment to civil rights.

"King [was] calling on both parties to take a look at themselves," Crawford says.

With the movement gaining steam, King used his speech to take stock of where things stood and what must be done next, Calloway-Thomas says. "He is revisiting the status of African American people."

" Our God Is Marching On! " (March 25, 1965 — Montgomery, Ala.)

The speech was delivered after the last of three Selma-Montgomery marches to call for voting rights. Protesters were beaten by Alabama law enforcement officials at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma on March 7 in what came to be known as Bloody Sunday . Among the nearly 60 wounded that day by club-wielding police was John Lewis, the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), who suffered a fractured skull. (Lewis later served 17 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.) A second attempt to reach Montgomery a few days later was again turned back at the bridge. In a third try, marchers finally reached the steps of the Alabama State Capitol on March 25.

"Finally the group of protesters gets all the way to the Capitol, and King delivers a speech to what we think is about 25,000 people," Miller says. The speech is also often referred to as the "How Long? Not Long" speech because of that powerful refrain, Miller says.

Jonathan Eig, author of the biography King: A Life , published last year, says he thinks about three-fourths of the speech was written out. "Then [King] goes off script and gives a sermon."

That's when he answers the question "How long?" for his audience. How long will it be until Black people have the same rights as white people? "Not long, because no lie can live forever," King tells his exuberant listeners.

"That's the part that really echoes. No question," Eig says. "And I think that's when he knew he was at his best. He knew that he could bring the crowd to its feet and inspire them."

Also notable is a famous anecdote that King shared in his speech, one that appeared earlier in his 1963 " Letter from a Birmingham Jail " addressed to his "fellow clergymen." It relates the words of Sister Pollard, a 70-year-old Black woman who had walked everywhere, refusing to ride the Montgomery buses during the 1955-1956 boycott.

"One day, she was asked while walking if she didn't want to ride," King said, speaking to the crowd that had just successfully marched from Selma to Montgomery. "And when she answered, 'No,' the person said, 'Well, aren't you tired?' And with her ungrammatical profundity, she said, 'My feets is tired, but my soul is rested.'"

"And in a real sense this afternoon, we can say that our feet are tired but our souls are rested," he said.

The story of Sister Pollard would be used again in the coming years.

But the speech may be best remembered today for another line, where King said, "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice."

In fact, King was using the words of a 19th-century Unitarian minister, Theodore Parker . Parker was an abolitionist who secretly funded John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry in 1859, often seen as an opening salvo of the Civil War. In a sermon given seven years before the raid, Parker used the line that King would pick up more than a century later.

"Dr. King absorbed all kinds of material, heard from others, used it on his own. But this is what we call appropriation or transformation when the old seems new," Miller says.

" Beyond Vietnam " (April 4, 1967 — New York City)

King had already begun speaking out about the war in Vietnam, but this speech was his most forceful statement on the conflict to date. Black soldiers were dying in disproportionate numbers . King noted the irony that in Vietnam, "Negro and white boys" were killing and dying alongside each other "for a nation that has been unable to seat them together in the same schools."

"So we watch them, in brutal solidarity, burning the huts of a poor village, but we realize that they would hardly live on the same block in Chicago," he said. "I could not be silent in the face of such cruel manipulation of the poor."

SNCC leader Stokely Carmichael , a major civil rights figure, had come out against the war and encouraged King to join him. But some in King's own inner circle had cautioned him against speaking about Vietnam.

Stokely Carmichael, A Philosopher Behind The Black Power Movement

Although powerful and timely, the speech drew a harsh and immediate reaction from a nation that had only just begun to reckon with the rising casualties and economic toll of the war. Both The Washington Post and The New York Times published editorials criticizing it. The Post said King had "diminished his usefulness to his cause, his country, his people" and the Times said he had "dampened his prospects for becoming the Negro leader who might be able to get the nation 'moving again' on civil rights."

King knew he would take heat for the speech, especially from the administration of President Lyndon B. Johnson, with whom he'd worked to get the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and, a year later, the Voting Rights Act, through Congress. With the presidential election just 19 months away, continued support of Johnson's Vietnam policy was crucial to his reelection. Nearly 10 months after the speech, however, the Tet Offensive launched by the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese army would help turn U.S. public opinion against the war and lead Johnson to not seek another term.

But in April 1967, the reaction to the speech was "far worse than King or his advisers imagined," says Miller, of North Carolina State University. Johnson "excommunicated" the civil rights leader, he says, adding that even leaders of the NAACP expressed disappointment that King had focused attention on the war.

"His immediate response was that he was crushed," Miller says. "There are a number of people who have documented that he literally broke down in tears when he realized the kind of backlash towards it."

He was criticized from both sides of the political aisle. Sen. Barry Goldwater, R-Ariz., a staunch conservative who made a failed run for the presidency in 1964, said King's speech "could border a bit on treason."

"King himself said that he anguished over doing the speech," says Indiana University's Calloway-Thomas.

" The Three Evils of Society " (Aug. 31, 1967 — Chicago)

The three evils King outlines in this speech are poverty, racism and militarism . Referring to Johnson's Great Society program to help lift rural Americans out of poverty, King said that it had been "shipwrecked off the coast of Asia, on the dreadful peninsula of Vietnam" and that meanwhile, "the poor, Black and white are still perishing on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity."

Calloway-Thomas calls it "the most scathing critique of American society by King that I have ever read."

"We need, according to him, a radical redistribution of political and economic power," she says, "Is that implying reparations? Is that implying socialism?"

Calloway-Thomas hears in King's words an antecedent to the Black Lives Matter movement. "One sees in that speech some relationship between the rhetoric of Dr. King at that moment and the rhetoric of Black Lives Matter at this moment," she says.

It was also one of the many instances where King quoted poet Langston Hughes, with whom he had become friends. "What happens to a dream deferred? It leads to bewildering frustration and corroding bitterness," King said in a nod to Hughes' most famous poem, " Harlem ."

King and Hughes traveled together to Nigeria in 1960, Miller notes, calling the poet an often unrecognized but nonetheless "central figure" in the early Civil Rights Movement. "They exchanged letters. Dr. King told [Hughes] how much he used his poetry. Dr. King used seven poems by Langston Hughes in his sermons and speeches from 1956 to 1958."

" I've Been to the Mountaintop! " (April 3, 1968 — Memphis, Tenn.)

This is King's last speech, delivered a day before his assassination at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn., on April 4, 1968. He was in the city to lend his support and his voice to the city's striking sanitation workers .

"He wasn't expecting to give a speech that night," according to Clayborne Carson, Martin Luther King, Jr. centennial professor emeritus at Stanford University. "He was hoping to get out of it. He was not feeling well."

"They call him and say, 'The people here want to hear you. They don't want to hear us.' And plus, the place was packed that night" despite a heavy downpour, Carson says. "I think he recognized that people really wanted to hear him. And despite the state of his health, he decided to go."

Martin Luther King Jr. makes his last public appearance, at the Mason Temple in Memphis, Tenn., on April 3, 1968. The following day, King was assassinated on his motel balcony.

The haunting words, in which King says, "I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you" have led many people to think he was prophesying his own death the following day at the hands of assassin James Earl Ray .

"The speech really does feel a bit like his own eulogy," says Eig. "He's talking about earthly salvation and heavenly salvation. And, in the end, boldly equating himself with Moses, who doesn't live to see the Promised Land."

The speech is largely, if not entirely, extemporaneous. And by the end, King was exhausted, says Carson. "It's pretty clear when you watch the film that he's not in the best shape."

"He barely makes it to the end," he says.

"But he relied on his audience to bring him along," Carson says. "I think it's one of those speeches where the crowd is inspiring him and he's inspiring them. That's what makes it work."

It's a great speech, made greater still because it was his last, says Calloway-Thomas.

"You have this wonderful man who epitomized the social and political situation in the United States in the 20th century," she says. "There he is, dying so tragically and dreadfully. It has a lot of pity and pathos buried inside it."

The Correct Thing for Catholics: 21 Things to Do (and 18 Things to Avoid) During Lent

‘It is not the correct thing … to begin the Lenten season by grumbling.’

Catholics pray on Ash Wednesday, March 6, 2019, at a church in Manila.

Editor’s Note: Visit EWTN’s special website on Lent for the current penitential rules and further background on the season.

I am always hunting through the past for interesting corners of Catholic life and practice. A few years ago, I found a book, published in 1891, called The Correct Thing for Catholics. It’s available online here.

The tone is arch, but of course that was the tone of public discourse at the time — watch The Gilded Age , and you’ve got it.

And yes, you read this and you might think, rules, rules, rules. Where’s my mature adult Christian freedom at?

You’d have a point, of course, but you might also have lived enough time on this earth to be so exhausted by the pressure to be spiritually creative that a few tried-and-true rules and regulations don’t seem that bad, really.

Yes, yes, we know what that can lead to. The dreaded specter of legalism, of course. But guess what? Anything can have negative consequences, even my Spirit-Led-Personal-Spiritual-Practice. Hard to believe, but true.

So let’s just all try to do the correct thing for Lent …

It Is the Correct Thing

To begin the holy and penitential season of Lent by assisting at Mass and partaking of the blessed ashes on Ash Wednesday.

To resolve to observe all the regulations of the Church as far as one is able.

To abstain from all worldly amusements from motives of piety and not because it is bad form to keep up social dissipations during Lent. Society closes its doors during this time.

To decline all invitations to amusements.

To remember that a woman who is able to keep up the round of social enjoyments all winter ought to be able to fast during Lent.

To be punctilious about attending the Lenten devotions Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

To assist at the daily Mass if at all possible.

To take but one full meal on any day in Lent (Sundays excepted), and then not till after twelve o’clock.

To know that when it is the custom to take dinner in the evening and not at midday, a collation is permitted in the morning.

To know that fish (oysters) and meat cannot be used at the same meal during any day in Lent, even on Sundays.

To know that meat is allowed but once a day except on Sundays.

To know that on Wednesdays and Fridays, meat is not allowed, nor is it allowed on the second Saturday in Lent (Ember-day) or Holy Saturday. That if the dinner or full meal is taken at noon, one may take a cup of tea, coffee or thin chocolate in the morning, and a collation, which is about the one-fourth of any ordinary meal, in the evening.

To know that one is obliged to fast as soon as he finishes his twenty-first year, or begins his twenty-second. That children should abstain from meat when they reach the age of seven years.

To remember that abstinence and fasting are two different things. Every Friday in the year is a day of abstinence but is not a fast day.

Every day in Lent except Sundays is a fast day.

To remember that sick, convalescent or delicate people are not obliged to fast. That those engaged at hard labor, tradesmen generally, railroaders, steamboat-men, etc., are not obliged to fast.

To know that every Saturday in the year is a day of abstinence like Friday, but the people in the United States are exempt at the present time.

To lay aside the pipe or the bottle during Lent.

To devote the time of Lent to a building up of one’s spiritual life.

To make Lent a red-letter period for the poor and suffering.

To remember that travelers should keep Lent abroad as well as at home, and that the mere fact of leaving home does not abrogate the Lenten obligations.

It Is Not the Correct Thing

To begin the Lenten season by grumbling.

To keep Lent because it is fashionable to do so.

To occupy one’s time in preparing for the post-Lenten festivities.

To fail to attend the Stations of the Cross, as well as the Wednesday and Sunday evening instructions.

To neglect daily Mass when able to attend. In cities where there are early Masses in nearly all churches, one who wishes, with a little mortification, may attend Mass.

To neglect spiritual reading, religious instructions, and acts of self-denial.

To omit works of charity when the occasion of doing good presents itself.

To begin Lent with the proper dispositions, and relax before it is over.

To neglect works of penance when one is free from the obligations of fasting.

To take milk, thick chocolate or highly sweetened coffee in the morning.

The 5 George Harrison post-Beatles songs you need to hear: “I write lyrics and I make up songs, but I'm not a great lyricist or songwriter or producer. It's when you put all these things together — that makes me"

Join us for our traditional look back at the news and features that floated your boat this year.

Best of 2023 : There’s a memorable scene in Peter Jackson’s 2021 documentary Get Back where a microphone concealed in a pot of flowers in the dining room at Twickenham Studios picks up a discussion between John Lennon and Paul McCartney. It’s early afternoon on Monday 13 January, 1969 and the pair are discussing the sudden departure of George Harrison from The Beatles and an unsuccessful meeting the previous day to try and resolve the situation.

“It’s a festering wound and yesterday we allowed it to go even deeper and we didn’t give him any bandages,” observes Lennon drolly. “I do think that he’s right,” concedes McCartney, “that’s why I think we’ve got a problem now.”

Harrison left after McCartney allegedly accused him of “vamping” on the rehearsals for the song Get Back. But there was a deeper issue at stake. By then Harrison had emerged as a songwriter of real merit. Wedged between two mercurial talents, both unable to rescind creative ground, he doggedly and delicately chose his moments to push his own material forward.

The Beatles split on 10 April 1970 sparked creative emancipation for George. On 27 November that year, he released All Things Must Pass, his third solo album and the first ‘true’ triple album in rock history. It’s a stunning, sprawling work of real breadth and ambition, enhanced by George’s distinctive slide guitar work. He released 12 solo albums in his life, but All Things Must Pass is arguably the finest. The album was a critical and commercial triumph, reaching No. 1 on both sides of the Atlantic.

In 1987, he released the platinum-selling album Cloud Nine and one year later, formed The Travelling Wilburys with Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. They released two critically acclaimed albums. “George absolutely adored the Wilburys,” recalled Tom Petty. “That was his baby from the beginning.”

In 1994, Harrison collaborated on The Beatles Anthology project , which included recording Free As A Bird (1995) and Real Love (1996), two new Beatles songs built around solo vocal and piano tapes recorded by John Lennon. “I hope somebody does this to all my crap demos when I'm dead,” quipped Harrison, “make them into hit songs.”

While Harrison may not have possessed the same hook-laden sensibilities of John and Paul, his songwriting had a real beauty and depth. "It may seem a funny thing to say,” he once recalled. “It's just like, I write lyrics and I make up songs, but I'm not a great lyricist or songwriter or producer. It's when you put all these things together — that makes me."

1.  All Things Must Pass – All Things Must Pass (1970)

Eastern philosophy meets Western pop sensibilities on this song, which was originally recorded by Harrison on his 26th birthday as a demo for The Beatles. Like Clapton, Harrison was hugely inspired by Music From The Big Pink, the 1968 debut album by The Band. In late 1968, Harrison visited Woodstock and jammed with The Band . In 1987, he told journalist Timothy White that his starting point for All Things Must Pass was The Weight , a song that “had a religious and a country feeling to it”.

On 10 January 1969, Harrison presented All Things Must Pass to The Beatles but it was ultimately rejected.

He gave the track to Billy Preston to record and then decided to record it himself. Sessions took place at Abbey Road Studios between 26 May and early June 1970, with Eric Clapton, bassist Klaus Voorman, pianist Bobby Whitlock and drummers Jim Gordon and Ringo Starr as the early nucleus.

When it came to the guitars chosen to use on the album, Harrison and Clapton kept it simple. "For George, it was Stratocaster time," Klaus Voormann told //Sound And Vision// in 2021, referring to Harrison’s hand-painted 1961 Fender Sonic Blue Stratocaster, dubbed 'Rocky'. “And Eric played a Les Paul, sometimes switching to a Strat, as well. For acoustic guitar, Harrison played a Harptone. He was playing these all the time. They're a very loud, hard rhythm guitar, compared to Martins, which are more mellow."

All Things Must Pass is a soulful, soaring track, with lyrics based on a translation of part of chapter 23 of the Tao Te Ching. The death of Harrison’s mother in July 1970 lent an added poignancy to this majestic composition.

2.  My Sweet Lord - All Things Must Pass (1970)

One of Harrison’s most iconic solo efforts that reached No. 1 in 15 countries across the world. Once again, his spirituality informs the lyrics. The top-line melody on the chorus is set against a blissfully simple A-Em chord sequence.

The track was recorded at Abbey Road Studios on 28 May 1970 and Harrison assembled a huge cast of musicians. There are five guitarists playing acoustics on the song: Harrison, Eric Clapton, Peter Frampton, and Badfinger’s Pete Ham and Joey Molland. John Barham arranged the strings, which consisted of eight violins, eight violas, four cellos and two double basses.

Around two minutes in there is a key change from E major to F#major, which pushes Harrison’s vocals and heightens the impassioned delivery. The real standout element on the track though is his masterful slide playing, which is the real sonic signature.

According to Phil Spector, who co-produced the track, Harrison was an utter perfectionist in the studio. “My Sweet Lord must have taken about twelve hours to overdub the guitar solos,” recalled Spector. “He must have had that in triplicate, six-part harmony, before we decided on two-part harmony. Perfectionist is not the word ... He was beyond that.”

For all its merits, the success of My Sweet Lord was overshadowed a few months after its release when Harrison was sued for copyright infringement by the publisher of He’s So Fine, a 1963 hit for girl group The Chiffons. On 31 August 1976, Harrison was found guilty of “subconsciously” plagiarising He’s So Fine, which was written by Ronnie Mack.

"I wasn’t consciously aware of the similarity between He’s So Fine and My Sweet Lord when I wrote the song," wrote Harrison in his autobiography I Me Mine. "Although when my version of the song came out and started to get a lot of airplay, people started talking about it, and it was then I thought, 'Why didn’t I realise?' It would have been very easy to change a note here or there, and not affect the feeling of the record."

3. Isn’t It A Pity – All Things Must Pass (1970)

George Harrison never lost faith in Isn’t It A Pity, despite it winding up on The Beatles’ pile of rejected songs on numerous occasions. He originally presented it to the band on the 1966 Revolver sessions and engineer Geoff Emerick recalls him putting it forward for Sgt Pepper. Two years later it was roundly rejected for the Get Back sessions in January 1969. In a taped conversation from those sessions, Harrison reminded John Lennon that he had vetoed Isn't It A Pity three years earlier, adding that he was considering offering the song to Frank Sinatra.

The song fits seamlessly within the themes of spiritual salvation and friendship that pervade the All Things Must Pass album. It’s a powerful, ominous ballad, with a timeless message. “Isn't It A Pity is about whenever a relationship hits a down point,” Harrison explained in his 1980 autobiography I Me Mine. “It was a chance to realise that if I felt somebody had let me down, then there's a good chance I was letting someone else down."

It’s an anthemic and deeply moving ballad that has been described as the emotional and musical centrepiece of the All Things Must Pass album. When he finally recorded it, he paired it with My Sweet Lord to create a powerful double A-side debut single. The song also provided a showcase for his elaborate slide guitar patterns.

Throughout the album sessions, Harrison and Clapton’s guitar amps were set up in the middle of the room. Clapton was keen to play through a small 5-watt Fender Champ. "It was a time when they were asking, 'Are we gonna use that little Champ amp, or are we gonna take a proper amplifier?’," recalled Klaus Voorman, in an interview with Sound & Vision. "Because they were all crazy about those Champ amps. Eric came up with this, and everybody went, 'Oh, yeah, Champ amp!'"

4. Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth) – Living In The Material World (1973)

When released as a single, this track reached No. 1, nudging Wings off the top slot. On Living In The Material World, Harrison abandoned the vast sonic soundscapes of Phil Spector’s production opting for a more minimal sound with a tightly-knit core of musicians – drummer Jim Keltner, bassist Klaus Voorman, pianist Nicky Hopkins and organist Gary Knight.

Harrison described the song as "a prayer and personal statement between me, the Lord, and whoever likes it".

His voice has a nice rasp to it, suggesting he’s already attempted a few takes. There’s an upbeat yet soothing feel to the track. Production is lean with some nifty slide guitar work from Harrison.

His acoustic guitar and Hopkin’s piano are prominent but the drums are way down in the mix. Legendary session drummer Jim Keltner recalled his contribution on the song to Uncut in 2023: "The drums are kind of subdued, but I was playing a very busy little syncopated part, trying to play with the guitar – and George was so easy to play with. When we finally got the take, I remember listening and thinking, I wouldn't have got away with that with anybody else. Any other producer would probably have said, ‘Okay, that's cool, now let's have a proper backbeat and nail it down’."

5. Handle With Care – The Travelling Wilburys (1988)

A flawless slice of power pop and one that provided the impetus for the formation of The Travelling Wilburys , the informal supergroup consisting of Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan , Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. The track has everything: unforgettable hooks, an enigmatic descending bass line, a soaring bridge and some sharp, memorable lyrics; “I've been fobbed off, and I've been fooled / I've been robbed and ridiculed / In daycare centres and night schools / Handle me with care.”

The song was originally recorded as a throwaway b-side until his label, Warner Bros, intervened. Harrison contacted Lynne, who was working with Orbison at the time. Dylan was roped in when they decided to use the garage studio at his house in Malibu to record the track. Petty became involved only when Harrison dropped by his house to retrieve a guitar.

The track was released as a single on 17 October 1988 and became the Travelling Wilburys’ most successful single, reaching No. 21 in the UK, No, 45 in the US and top five in Australia and New Zealand.

JERUSALEM (AP) — It was a warm handshake between the unlikeliest of statesmen, conducted under the beaming gaze of U.S. President Jimmy Carter . Sunlight streamed through the trees at Camp David, Maryland, as Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin solidified a landmark agreement that has allowed over 40 years of peace between Israel and Egypt. It has served as an important source of stability in a volatile region.

That peace has held through two Palestinian uprisings and a series of wars between Israel and Hamas . But now, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowing to send Israeli troops into Rafah , a city in Gaza on the border with Egypt, the Egyptian government is threatening to void the agreement.

Here’s a look at the history of the treaty and what could happen if it is nullified.

HOW DID THE TREATY ORIGINATE?

It was 1977, and Begin, Israel’s new prime minister, opposed ceding any of the land Israel had conquered a decade earlier in the 1967 Mideast war. Those lands included Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.

Egypt and Israel had fought four major wars, most recently in 1973. So it shocked the world when Egypt’s Sadat broke with other Arab leaders and decided to engage with the Israelis.

The talks culminated in the Camp David Accords in September 1978 and a peace treaty the following year.

Under the peace treaty, Israel agreed to withdraw from the Sinai, which Egypt would leave demilitarized. Israeli ships were granted passage through the Suez Canal, a key trade route. The countries established full diplomatic relations in Israel’s first peace agreement with an Arab country.

“The Camp David Accords were led by three brave men who took a bold stance because they knew the lasting effects for peace and security, both then and for the future. We need the same kind of leadership today, and it is currently lacking in the Israeli government,” said Paige Alexander, chief executive of the Carter Center.

WHAT IS EGYPT’S CURRENT POSITION?

Two Egyptian officials and a Western diplomat told The Associated Press on Sunday that Egypt may suspend the peace treaty if Israeli troops invade Rafah.

Netanyahu says Rafah is Hamas’ last remaining stronghold after more than four months of war and that sending in ground troops is essential to defeat the group.

But Egypt opposes any move that could send desperate Palestinians fleeing across the border onto its territory. Rafah also serves as the besieged territory’s main entry point for humanitarian aid, and an Israeli attack could stifle the deliveries of key supplies.

Rafah’s population has swelled from 280,000 people to an estimated 1.4 million as Palestinians flee fighting elsewhere in Gaza. Hundreds of thousands of those evacuees are living in sprawling tent camps.

Netanyahu has ordered the military to prepare a plan to evacuate all Palestinian civilians before the offensive starts. But it is unclear where they will go.

Netanyahu said Sunday that they would be able to return to open spaces farther north. But those areas have been badly damaged by the Israeli offensive.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE TREATY IS VOIDED?

The treaty greatly limits the number of troops on both sides of the border. This has allowed Israel to focus its military on other threats.

Along with the war in Gaza, Israel has engaged in near-daily skirmishes with the Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon while its security forces deploy heavily in the occupied West Bank.

If Egypt were to nullify the agreement, it could mean that Israel can no longer rely on its southern border as an oasis of calm. Bolstering forces along its border with Egypt would no doubt challenge an Israeli military already thinly stretched.

But it would bear serious ramifications for Egypt as well. Egypt has received billions of dollars in U.S. military assistance from the U.S. since the peace agreement.

If the agreement is voided, it could jeopardize that funding. A massive military buildup would also strain Egypt’s already struggling economy.

Alexander said that if Israel attacks Rafah, it would “threaten to draw Egypt into the hostilities, which would be catastrophic for the entire region.”

"Climate action and peace go together."

The BDN Opinion section operates independently and does not set news policies or contribute to reporting or editing articles elsewhere in the newspaper or on  bangordailynews.com .

Sabine von Mering is a Public Voices Fellow on the Climate Crisis with The OpEd Project in partnership with the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, a climate activist with 350 Mass and the Director of the Center for German and European Studies at Brandeis University. This column was produced for Progressive Perspectives, a project of The Progressive magazine, and distributed by Tribune News Service.

When my son was a teenager and he first began to notice what I do for work, he used to roll his eyes when he saw the books I was reading: “Why do you like reading about all this depressing stuff, Mom? World War II, the Holocaust, climate change?”

Why indeed. As a professor of German and European studies, the answer is complicated. Last semester, I taught two courses — one on European perspectives on climate change , and another on antisemitism on social media. After the attacks on Oct. 7, I realized that, in comparison to the conflict in Israel-Palestine, the climate crisis seems utterly solvable. And that these crises are, of course, connected.

Climate action and peace go together. We have known for some time that climate change is a threat multiplier and that there is a climate cost to war. And, of course, both kill a lot of people. Climate change is expected to kill 3.4 million people per year by this century’s end. Tens of millions have been killed in wars over the past decades. Military emissions are not counted in our carbon budgets, but they are substantial. The emissions from Israel’s military actions in the first two months of the war in Gaza alone were equal to burning more than 150,000 tons of coal.

Yet, for some reason, many view peace and climate protection as too costly. To evaluate that claim, all we have to do is follow the money: While the Biden administration touts its $1 trillion spending on the Inflation Reduction Act as a major climate win and Republicans consistently attack the measure as “too expensive,” that sum pales in comparison to the more than $14 trillion the United States has spent on military engagements since 2001. Tens of billions of dollars have also been allocated to support both Ukraine’s and Israel’s militaries. As we prioritize military spending over climate action, companies like Raytheon and Lockheed Martin are getting rich off all the suffering.

If we invest meaningfully in changing course away from fossil fuels, we also make wars driven by feuds over land and resources less attractive and less profitable. As my colleague Harrison Watson has shown, the Middle East is already a climate victim suffering tremendously from extreme weather, a situation that is expected to get a lot worse in the near future. Millions of Palestinians and Israelis will be impacted. Many already are. On top of that, millions more will migrate from African and Asian countries that are expected to become uninhabitable within this century, contributing to further disruptions and potential for conflict. One of the countries already most severely impacted by conflict and climate change is Yemen, where more than 21 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. According to Human Rights Watch, Yemen is “one of the most water-scarce countries in the world.”

This connection between war and climate and our unwillingness to change course has a long history. I remember vividly how relieved I was to see the Kyoto Protocol adopted in 1997, and my disappointment when George W. Bush decided to pull the United States out in March 2001. There were protests against the decision, but then came the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, which led to the invasion of Afghanistan a month later and, in March 2003, Iraq. The two wars left hundreds of thousands dead and cost trillions of dollars, ending with Afghanistan back in the hands of the very group the war aimed to unseat. During that time, emissions rose more dramatically than ever before, exacerbating the climate crisis.

Just imagine if we invested those trillions of dollars in a just transition away from fossil fuels instead of continuously feeding the violent terror that then comes back to haunt us. We must fully fund diplomacy, cooperation, and peace-building. It is not naive to aim public resources away from military conflict. It is naive to think ever more weapons will bring about a peaceful, sustainable future.

Give peace a chance: The way conflict can be eased, according to social psychology

by Leiden University

conflict

How to reduce aggression when two parties are at odds? Ph.D. research by psychologist Lennart Reddmann shows that it can help to offer them a peaceful alternative. However, the attacking party benefits the most from such a solution.

After years of research into conflict and cooperation, Reddmann knows that people don't fight each other just for fun.

"Experimental research shows that for the most part, parties attack each other under specific circumstances: When they are in an environment where resources are scarce, and attacking the other is the only way to make gain or profit." But prolonged conflict, or even war, is destructive. Not only is it stressful, but parties involved invest money , resources, and energy that they most likely won't get back.

"Therefore," Reddmann explains, "I wanted to explore whether a peaceful alternative would help reduce aggression among conflicting parties."

Asymmetric conflict

He and his colleagues investigated this in economic experiments, where they sent participants into an asymmetric conflict. Asymmetric means that a distinction was made between an attacking and a defending party.

"We had participants play out a conflict against each other online and in the lab. In the lab, although they were in the same room, the participants each sat at a computer and did not see each other," Reddmann explains. Both sides were given a real amount of money, and one side was then given the option of attacking the other side, investing a sum of money in the process. The other party then had to defend itself by also putting in an amount of money; whoever put in more money than his opponent won the conflict.

"We worked with real money, so there was actually something at stake for the participants," says Reddmann.

Peaceful way out

Then, in several experiments, the researchers offered a peaceful solution to the participants.

"One example is a small concession, or appeasement: the defender contributes a small amount of money to satisfy the attacker. Or we gave both sides the opportunity to—instead of investing in deconstructive conflict—make a profit by investing in an external resource," says Reddmann. The result was that these peaceful alternatives made the conflict recede and both sides become less aggressive towards each other.

"Many people used the peaceful option and both sides benefited. However, we did see that the attacking party benefited relatively more from the peaceful alternative, because they were more flexible in how they spent their resources," says Reddmann.

Reddmann explains that the dynamics observed in the lab are also reflected in asymmetrical conflicts in the real world: "Take, for example, the war in Ukraine. In this case, there is a clear aggressor, Russia, against which Ukraine must defend itself. As the attacking party, Russia has more flexibility than Ukraine, which is being invaded and must deploy all its money, resources, and manpower to defend itself. Meanwhile, Russia can keep its domestic economy running and aggressively launch attacks at the same time."

"But," Reddmann adds right away, "due to numerous factors, this war is many times more complex than the controlled setting in the lab. Still, this research does help better understand how the dynamics in a conflict work, and why, even if peaceful alternatives used, the attacking side may benefit most from it."

Is that a bad thing, if such a solution eventually help reduce conflict?

Reddmann responds, "That is of course a value judgment, but I do think it would certainly be more beneficial [that] if a conflict is ended, it is done in an equal way."

Lennart Reddmann recently received his Ph.D. for his thesis titled "Peaceful Alternatives to Assymetric Conflict." He is now working as a postdoc at the Max Planck Institute in Freiburg, where he will conduct research on the mechanisms behind conflict , exploitation and slavery.

Alexey Navalny's message to the world "if they decide to kill me," and what his wife wants people to do now

By Tucker Reals

February 16, 2024 / 11:05 AM EST / CBS News

"You're not allowed to give up." That was the central message Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny wanted to stress to his supporters in the event of his death. He said it in an Oscar-winning 2022 documentary about his life by Canadian director Daniel Roher, in which Navalny spoke about his political ideals and surviving a purported poisoning attack.

"If they decide to kill me, it means that we are incredibly strong," said the anti-corruption campaigner who arguably turned into President Vladimir Putin's most potent political challenger. "We need to utilize this power to not give up, to remember we are a huge power that is being oppressed by these bad dudes."

Russian prison authorities said Friday that Navalny had died after going for a walk, feeling suddenly unwell and then collapsing. The Office of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District said medics at the IK-3 penal colony in Russia's far north were unable to revive him.

Navalny's own team said they couldn't verify the information about his death. U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris unequivocally placed the blame on Putin's government.

"This is of course terrible news, which we are working to confirm," Harris said at the Munich Security Conference in Germany. "My prayers are with his family, including his wife Yulia, who is with us today, and, if confirmed, this would be a further sign of Putin's brutality. Whatever story they tell, let us be clear: Russia is responsible."

Yulia Navalnaya, Navalny's wife, spoke on stage at the Munich conference after Harris.

"You've probably all already seen the terrible news coming today. I thought for a long time whether I should come out here or fly straight to my children. But then I thought, 'What would Alexey do in my place?' And I'm sure he would be here. He would be on this stage."

She made it clear that she didn't trust any information coming from Russian government officials.

"They always lie. But if this is true, I want Putin, everyone around him, Putin's friends, his government, to know that they will bear responsibility for what they did to our country, to my family and to my husband, and this day will come very soon," Navalnaya said. "I want to call on the entire world community, everyone in this room, people all over the world, to unite together and defeat this evil, to defeat the terrifying regime that is now in Russia."

Russia has been condemned globally for its invasion of neighboring Ukraine, which sparked a grueling war set to enter its third year on Feb. 24. Navalny was a fierce critic of what he called the "stupid war" launched by "madman" Putin.

In a cruel twist, Putin and his political allies — who have run Russia for decades — have used the war as a pretext to enact harsh new laws in the name of national security, dramatically curbing free speech. Laws put on the books over the last several years have given the government power to lock up anyone who criticizes Russia's military or its actions in Ukraine.

It's all part of a wider crackdown on dissent that reached a crescendo after pro-Navalny protests swept across the nation following the opposition leader's 2021 arrest, and then took on new dimensions amid the Ukraine war.

Hundreds of politicians, opposition activists, journalists and civil society figures — including some of Navalny's own top aides — are in prison or have fled Russia into exile.

Street protests in Russia are illegal without prior permission, which officials don't grant to anyone known to oppose the government.

Trump Fraud Trial Penalty Will Exceed $450 Million

The ruling in Donald J. Trump’s civil fraud case could cost him all his available cash. The judge said that the former president’s “complete lack of contrition” bordered on pathological.

A New York judge on Friday handed Donald J. Trump a crushing defeat in his civil fraud case , finding the former president liable for conspiring to manipulate his net worth and ordering him to pay a penalty of nearly $355 million plus interest that could wipe out his entire stockpile of cash .

The decision by Justice Arthur F. Engoron caps a chaotic, yearslong case in which New York’s attorney general put Mr. Trump’s fantastical claims of wealth on trial. With no jury, the power was in Justice Engoron’s hands alone, and he came down hard: The judge delivered a sweeping array of punishments that threatens the former president’s business empire as he simultaneously contends with four criminal prosecutions and seeks to regain the White House.

Justice Engoron barred Mr. Trump for three years from serving in top roles at any New York company, including portions of his own Trump Organization. He also imposed a two-year ban on the former president’s adult sons and ordered that they pay more than $4 million each. One of them, Eric Trump, is the company’s de facto chief executive, and the ruling throws into doubt whether any member of the family can run the business in the near term.

The judge also ordered that they pay substantial interest, pushing the penalty for the former president to $450 million, according to the attorney general, Letitia James.

In his unconventional style, Justice Engoron criticized Mr. Trump and the other defendants for refusing to admit wrongdoing for years. “Their complete lack of contrition and remorse borders on pathological,” he said.

He noted that Mr. Trump had not committed violent crimes and also conceded that “Donald Trump is not Bernard Madoff.” Still, he wrote, “defendants are incapable of admitting the error of their ways.”

The Civil Fraud Ruling on Donald Trump, Annotated

Former President Donald J. Trump was penalized $355 million plus interest and banned for three years from serving in any top roles at a New York company, including his own, in a ruling on Friday by Justice Arthur F. Engoron.

Mr. Trump will appeal the financial penalty but will have to either come up with the money or secure a bond within 30 days. The ruling will not render him bankrupt, because most of his wealth is in real estate, which altogether is worth far more than the penalty.

Mr. Trump will also ask an appeals court to halt the restrictions on him and his sons from running the company while it considers the case. In a news conference from his home in Mar-a-Lago on Friday evening, he attacked Ms. James and Justice Engoron, calling them both “corrupt.”

Alina Habba, one of Mr. Trump’s lawyers, described the ruling in her own statement as “a manifest injustice — plain and simple.” She added that “given the grave stakes, we trust that the Appellate Division will overturn this egregious verdict.”

But there might be little Mr. Trump can do to thwart one of the judge’s most consequential punishments: extending for three years the appointment of an independent monitor who is the court’s eyes and ears at the Trump Organization. Justice Engoron also strengthened the monitor’s authority to watch for fraud and second-guess transactions that look suspicious.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers have railed against the monitor, Barbara Jones, saying that her work had already cost the business more than $2.5 million; the decision to extend her oversight of the privately held company could enrage the Trumps, who see her presence as an irritant and an insult.

Ms. James had sought an even harsher penalty, asking for Mr. Trump to be permanently barred from New York’s business world. In the 2022 lawsuit that precipitated the trial, she accused Mr. Trump of inflating his net worth to obtain favorable treatment from banks and other lenders, attacking the foundation of his public persona as a billionaire businessman.

Even though the lenders made money from Mr. Trump, they were the purported victims in the case, with Ms. James arguing that without his fraud, they could have made even more.

The financial penalty reflects those lost profits, with nearly half of the $355 million — $168 million — representing the interest that Mr. Trump saved, and the remaining sum representing his profit on the recent sale of two properties, money that the judge has now clawed back from Mr. Trump and corporate entities he owns.

Before the trial began, Justice Engoron ruled that the former president had used his annual financial statements to defraud the lenders, siding with the attorney general on her case’s central claim. The judge’s Friday ruling ratified almost all of the other accusations Ms. James had leveled against Mr. Trump, finding that the former president had conspired with his top executives to violate several state laws.

The judge’s decision for now grants Ms. James, a Democrat, a career-defining victory. She campaigned for office promising to bring Mr. Trump to justice, and sat calmly in the courtroom as the former president attacked her, calling her a corrupt politician motivated solely by self-interest.

“This long running fraud was intentional, egregious, illegal,” Ms. James said during a Friday evening news conference, adding that “there cannot be different rules for different people in this country, and former presidents are no exception.”

New York Attorney General Speaks on Trump Fraud Case Decision

“today we are holding donald trump accountable,” said the attorney general, letitia james, after a new york judge found donald j. trump’s claims of wealth fraudulent..

No matter how rich, powerful or politically connected you are, everyone must play by the same rules. We have a responsibility to protect the integrity of the marketplace. And for years, Donald Trump engaged in deceptive business practices and tremendous fraud. Donald Trump falsely, knowingly, inflated his net worth by billions of dollars to unjustly enrich himself, his family, and to cheat the system. After 11 weeks of trial, we showed the staggering extent of his fraud and exactly how Donald Trump and the other defendants deceived banks, insurance companies and other financial institutions for their own personal gain. We prove just how much Donald Trump, his family and his company unjustly benefited from his fraud. White-collar financial fraud is not a victimless crime. When the powerful break the law and take more than their fair share, there are fewer resources available for working people, small businesses and families. Today we are holding Donald Trump accountable.

Her win is Mr. Trump’s second major courtroom loss in two months, following a January jury verdict in a defamation case brought by E. Jean Carroll, a writer whom he was found liable of sexually abusing. The jury penalized him $83.3 million.

Friday’s ruling comes as Manhattan prosecutors are set to try Mr. Trump on criminal charges late next month . He is also contending with 57 more felony counts across three other criminal cases.

But none of his legal troubles seem to have anguished Mr. Trump quite like the fraud case. During the trial, he protested its premise, pleading, “This has been a persecution of somebody that’s done a good job in New York.”

Mr. Trump’s lawyers argued that the fraud did not have a victim in the traditional sense , daring the attorney general to find someone who was harmed. And in a statement on Friday, a Trump Organization spokeswoman noted that the company had “never missed any loan payment or been in default on any loan” and that the lenders “performed extensive due diligence prior to entering into these transactions.”

At trial, Mr. Trump’s lawyers called as witnesses the president’s former bankers, who testified that they had been delighted to have Mr. Trump as a client.

Eric Trump and his brother Donald Trump Jr. also testified, but their efforts to distance themselves from their father’s financial statements fell flat with the judge. Justice Engoron’s decision to bar them from running any New York business for two years — and Mr. Trump for three — will likely strike a nerve with the Trump family.

Before the trial, the fallout from the case seemed to threaten the Trump Organization’s very existence. When Justice Engoron first ruled that Mr. Trump had committed fraud, he ordered the dissolution of much of the former president’s New York empire.

But legal experts had questioned the judge’s ability to do that , and in his ruling on Friday, Justice Engoron pulled back. Instead, the judge said any “restructuring and potential dissolution” would be up to Ms. Jones, the independent monitor.

The judge also granted Ms. Jones new authority as part of an “enhanced monitorship,” and asked her to recommend an independent compliance director who will oversee the company’s financial reporting from within its ranks.

The monitorship and other penalties, including a three-year ban on Mr. Trump and his company seeking loans from banks registered in New York, could hamstring the company as it seeks to compete in the state’s crowded real estate market.

However, nothing will hurt quite as much as the financial penalty. If upheld on appeal, it could erase the cushion of liquidity — cash, stocks and bonds — that Mr. Trump built in his post-presidential life.

Mr. Trump claimed under oath last year that he was sitting on more than $400 million in cash, but between Justice Engoron’s $355 million punishment, the interest Mr. Trump owes and the $83.3 million payout to Ms. Carroll, that might all be gone. If so, Mr. Trump might have to sell one of his properties or another asset to cover the payouts.

The symbolism of the punishments cannot be overlooked, either. Mr. Trump is synonymous with the company he ran for decades, and by severing him from its operations, the judge has written an embarrassing epilogue to the former president’s story of his career as a New York mogul.

For now, Mr. Trump has spun his legal misfortunes into what he sees as political gold. He has used the cases to falsely portray himself as a victim of a Democratic cabal led by President Biden, and he has campaigned at every courthouse he has visited.

In Justice Engoron’s courtroom, Mr. Trump delivered a rally-made rant from the witness stand, marking the climax of a monthslong proceeding that was alternately stultifying and scintillating. The former president attacked one of Ms. James’s lawyers, saying: “You and about every other Democrat, district attorney, A.G. and U.S. attorney were coming after me from 15 different sides. All Democrats, all Trump haters.”

He did not spare Ms. James herself, or the judge, calling the attorney general a “political hack” and Justice Engoron an “extremely hostile judge.”

Mr. Trump later delivered his own closing statement, calling Ms. James’s fraud accusation a “fraud on me” and saying that the attorney general was the one who “should pay me.”

He generated drama even when not in the spotlight, rolling his eyes at the defense table and muttering to his lawyers. He was particularly enraged by the testimony of his former fixer, Michael D. Cohen , who linked Mr. Trump directly to the fraud scheme.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers succeeded in rattling Mr. Cohen, and asked, based on apparent contradictions in his testimony, that Justice Engoron throw out the case. When the judge declined, Mr. Trump abruptly stood up and stormed out of the courtroom.

The judge largely tolerated Mr. Trump’s behavior, but early on, he barred the former president from attacking his staff members, most prominently his law clerk, who sat near the judge throughout the trial so they could confer. Mr. Trump twice violated that order, prompting $15,000 in fines from the judge.

Courtroom theatrics notwithstanding, the evidence presented was often tedious, consisting of years-old emails and spreadsheets. Through that documentary evidence, Ms. James’s lawyers showed that Mr. Trump’s company had ignored appraisals and manipulated numbers to inflate the value of properties such as golf clubs and office buildings, sometimes to absurd heights.

The most blatant exaggeration was the listed size of Mr. Trump’s triplex apartment in Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue. For years, the former president had valued it as if it were 30,000 square feet, when it was actually 10,996.

In his ruling, Justice Engoron blasted Mr. Trump and the other defendants, saying that misstating the apartment’s size was the only error to which they would admit.

Justice Engoron wrote that he was not looking to “judge morality” — only to find facts and apply the law.

“The court intends to protect the integrity of the financial marketplace and, thus, the public as a whole,” he wrote.

Justice Engoron added that Mr. Trump’s refusal to admit error left him with no choice but to conclude that the former president would continue to commit fraud unless he was stopped.
