Maths: Age 7–8 (Year 3)
In Year 3, your child will continue to develop their understanding of numbers and start to calculate using formal written methods. They will learn a lot more about fractions, including tenths. They will find perimeters of 2D shapes, use the 24-hour clock, recognise angles, and start to use bar charts.
They’ll count in steps of 4, 8, 50 and 100 and order numbers to 1000. They’ll partition numbers into 100s, 10s and 1s, add and subtract three-digit numbers, and multiply two-digit by one-digit numbers. They will be taught the 3, 4, and 8 times tables and begin to add and subtract fractions.
Don’t worry if some methods that your child learns are new to you! There are still simple things you can do at home to support their development.
How to help at home
You don’t need to be an expert to support your child with maths or help them develop a good sense of number! Here are three simple, but effective learning ideas that you can try with your child using everyday items at home.
1. Make arrays
Arrays are shapes or objects arranged in a rectangle, such as a muffin tray or an egg box. Give your child some counters, buttons or beads, say 12. How many different arrays can they make? What calculations does each array show?
2. Play with food
Use foods with a regular shape (cake, pizza, cucumber slices) and ask questions like: Let’s cut this into 8 pieces, what fraction is each piece?
Find fractions of amounts using foods such as fishfingers or biscuits: There are 12 in the packet and 4 of us. What fraction can we each have? How many each is that?
3. Hunt for treasure
Hide some ‘treasure’ in a room and blindfold your child. Give them directions to find the treasure, such as: Turn two right angles clockwise, now take three steps forward. Use whole, half, quarter and three-quarter turns clockwise and anti-clockwise.

Year 3 Maths Worksheets and Teaching Resources
Year 3 is a big milestone for primary school children — it’s the start of their key stage 2 journey! Having completed key stage 1, children will have grasped the basics of mathematics and they’ll be ready to embrace more challenging lessons.
The Year 3 maths curriculum opens up a whole new world of education. As children venture into the final key stage of primary education, they’ll start to develop independent learning skills as they tackle more complex and abstract concepts.
But as children are introduced to more advanced lessons and formal methods, it becomes increasingly important to ensure children continue having fun while learning. Children who learn with a smile, rather than a frustrated frown, are more likely to engage in lessons and retain information.
Year 3 White Rose Maths Resources: Teach For Mastery
Just like White Rose Maths, we’re big believers of teaching for mastery and sparking excitement about maths, because when children, especially 7-8-year-olds, enjoy maths lessons, that’s when they engage in education and retain information long term.
So if you’re taking a White Rose Maths approach in your lessons or home-learning sessions, you’ll be pleased to hear our Year 3 maths resources are aligned with the White Rose frameworks and the small steps to progression.
Each resource is designed with a clear learning objective in mind that aligns with one of the Year 3 small steps. This makes it easy for you to find resources that are perfect for your lesson plans and just right for children’s capabilities. The only assumed knowledge is that gained during the previous White Rose steps.
To help you teach for mastery in line with the White Rose Maths curriculum, our resources also include three types of tasks — focusing on reasoning, problem-solving and fluency — to challenge children and help them develop and consolidate their skills and knowledge.
And because a huge part of White Rose Maths and teaching for mastery is making sure the whole class progresses at a similar pace, we have a huge range of differentiated resources. We differentiate by complexity, rather than topic, so if some children move through content faster than others, they can delve deeper into topics with resources that reinforce their knowledge instead of move onto the next step and get far ahead of their classmates.
You can learn more about our White Rose-style resources by checking out our Supporting White Rose Maths Hub.

What Types Of Year 3 Teaching Resources Do We Offer?
Teacher-approved Year 3 Maths Worksheets And Resources
One of the best ways to make learning enjoyable is with the right learning materials. That’s where Master the Curriculum comes in. We’re here to provide all of the resources you need to help children master the Year 3 maths curriculum and have fun while doing so.
As a team of teachers, we know that children have different learning styles, and learning resources aren’t one-size-fits-all. So we’ve created resources for all types of learners. From differentiated maths worksheets to interactive maths videos, reasoning booklets, teaching slides and vocabulary cards, you’ll find a variety of resources for children aged seven to eight on Master the Curriculum.
Year 3 Maths Curriculum: What Will Children Learn?
Maths lessons in lower key stage 2 (Year 3 and Year 4) focus on helping children develop number fluency and problem-solving abilities. They will work towards memorising all of the times tables up to and including twelve, and they’ll solve problems with simple fractions and decimal place values. Students should also be able to use and spell mathematical vocabulary correctly — in this sense, the maths and English curriculum overlap somewhat. Throughout Year 3, children will start working towards these lower KS2 objectives by grasping concepts within seven different mathematical topics:
*Number and Place Value — Children will develop their fluency with whole numbers by learning to confidently count in steps of 4, 8, 50 and 100, compare and order numbers up to 1000 and recognise the place value of each digit in a three-digit number. *Addition and Subtraction — Working with numbers up to three digits, children will learn to add and subtract numbers both mentally and using written methods of calculation (column addition and subtraction). *Multiplication and Division — Children will learn and use multiplication facts for the 3, 4 and 8 times tables. They will also learn to multiply one-digit numbers by two-digit numbers. This understanding can then be applied to different problems and contexts, including measuring and scaling contexts, correspondence problems, and missing number problems. *Fractions — Pupils will learn to count in tenths and order, add and subtract fractions with the same denominator. Equivalent fractions also work their way into the Year 3 maths curriculum — children will practice recognising these fractions, and demonstrating them with diagrams. *Geometry — In order to develop a better understanding of shapes, children will learn to draw 2D shapes, make 3D shapes and confidently describe their properties. They will start to learn about angles, horizontal and vertical lines, and pairs of perpendicular and parallel lines. *Measurement — Lessons on measurement will teach children to measure, compare, add and subtract not just lengths, but also mass, volume and capacity. Children will learn about perimeters and will take part in hands-on learning as they measure the perimeters of shapes. Measurement activities can also include adding and subtracting amounts of money, telling the time, and learning about seconds, minutes, days, months and years. *Statistics — Using charts, graphs and diagrams, children will learn how to interpret and present data and answer one-step and two-step questions about the data presented.
How Our Year 3 Maths Resources Can Help
Whether you’re a teacher looking for resources to accompany your lesson plans, or a parent looking for primary maths resources for home learning, we’re here to help. Our resources cover all of the above topics within the Year 3 maths curriculum. With our teacher-approved learning materials, you can get children excited about learning, and use a variety of materials to keep education fresh and interesting for youngsters.
Here are just some of the benefits of using Master the Curriculum resources to enhance children’s learning experience.
Make Education Enjoyable
Let’s face it, little ones have a tendency to switch off if they lose interest, and if children switch off during lessons, they’re not going to learn or retain information. So our resources are designed to keep children engaged in maths lessons with fun visual elements and creative contexts.
Build Children’s Confidence in Maths
As children start to tackle more advanced mathematical concepts, they may find maths lessons more challenging. If children struggle with certain aspects of maths, their confidence can take a knock, especially if other children are progressing faster than them.
Our resources can suit different styles of learning and different abilities, so children can learn and build their confidence in maths with resources perfectly suited to their needs. They can consolidate their existing knowledge and grasp more complex concepts with the help of fun maths activities.
Although our resources are differentiated for varying abilities, we differentiate by complexity, not by number. So children will progress through objectives at the same pace, in line with the maths mastery approach. As a result, children won’t worry about being “left behind” — all children within a class can become fully confident in their abilities.

3rd Grade Math Worksheets
Rounding, Addition, and Subtraction
Students estimate quantities using rounding and develop fluency with the standard algorithm of addition and subtraction. Students focus on the precision of their calculations, and use them to solve real-world problems.
Multiplication and Division, Part 1
Students begin to explore the concepts of multiplication and division, beginning in the context of equal group and array problems, moving to skip-counting and repeated addition, and ending with more complex and/or abstract problems.
Multiplication and Division, Part 2
Students deepen their understanding of multiplication and division, including their properties and extending their study of factors to include all units from 0 to 10, as well as multiples of 10 within 100.
Students develop an understanding of areas as how much two-dimensional space a figure takes up, and relate it to their work with multiplication from Units 2 and 3.
Shapes and Their Perimeter
Students explore attributes of shapes in different categories, then learn to measure at least one of these attributes, their perimeter. They come to differentiate between perimeter and area as different measurements.
Students understand fractions as numbers on the number line and explore fraction equivalence and comparison in simple cases, then apply this fractional understanding to measure fractional lengths and represent them on a number line plot.
Measurement
Students explore measurement using kilograms, grams, liters, milliliters, and intervals of time in minutes.
How Do Students Build 3rd Grade Math Skills Across Units?
In Unit 1, Rounding, Addition, and Subtraction , students rely on their substantial work in 2nd grade on place value to develop an understanding of rounding. They then develop fluency with addition and subtraction within 1,000. Finally, they use both aforementioned skills to solve one-and two-step word problems involving addition and subtraction, using rounding to assess the reasonableness of their answers. While the content taught in this unit is not major work of 3rd grade as determined by the Common Core State Standards, it serves as a foundation for later work, such as assessing the reasonableness of all types of two-step word problems and multiplying one-digit numbers by multiples of ten, making it a useful introduction to 3rd grade math.
In Unit 2, Multiplication and Division Part I and Unit 3, Multiplication and Division Part II , students are introduced to the other two major operations, multiplication and division. They come to understand multiplication as finding the total number of objects in a certain number of equal-sized groups, and division as finding either the size of the group or the number of groups. Students work towards fluency of all multiplication and division facts within 100, relying on the properties and patterns to help in particular with the difficult facts of 6, 7, 8, 9. Students solve one-step multiplication and division word problems involving equal groups and arrays, and solve two-step word problems involving all four operations. They also explore myriad connections to multiplication and division, including exploring patterns, including patterns in the skip-counting sequence, and scaled picture and bar graphs.
In Unit 4, Area , students define area to be the number of square units needed to cover a two-dimensional space. They initially find the area of rectangles by counting unit squares or skip-counting by rows and columns. Then, seeing the connection between skip-counting and multiplication that was built in the prior two units, students apply their recently acquired skills with multiplication and division to calculate the area of a rectangle and solve real-world problems involving area. Finally, they find the area of composite rectilinear shapes, by decomposing them into rectangles, finding the area of those rectangles, and adding those areas together.
In Unit 5, Shapes and their Perimeter , students start by exploring two-dimensional shapes in different categories, seeing that shapes in those categories share attributes. They then explore the attribute of perimeter, and come to differentiate between perimeter and area as different measurements.
In Unit 6, Fractions , students build on their work partitioning circles and rectangles in 2nd grade to study fractions. They build more complex fractions from unit fractions, and start to understand fractions as numbers, rather than portions of shapes. To do so, students do extensive work with placing fractions on a number line, a helpful representation for comparing and finding equivalent fractions. Students also explore line plots with fractional measurements, a key advancement from 2nd grade work with line plots that connects to their work with fractions.
In Unit 7, Measurement , students study time as well as liquid volumes and masses. Students learn to read time to the nearest minute and use their work with number lines in Unit 1 (with rounding) and Unit 5 (with fractions) to solve problems involving elapsed time. They also rely on their work with number lines to read measurement scales, and use those measurements to solve one-step word problems in all four operations with liquid volumes and masses.

Bridges by Grade Level: 3
Students focus intensively on the four critical areas specified by the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in Grade Three:
- Developing understanding of multiplication and division and strategies for multiplication and division within 100
- Developing understanding of fractions, especially unit fractions (fractions with numerator 1)
- Developing understanding of the structure of rectangular arrays and of area
- Describing and analyzing two-dimensional shapes
The first unit reviews and extends work with addition and subtraction as students review facts, look for patterns, and work with larger numbers. Unit 2 transitions to multiplication by having students use a variety of rich contexts (arrays of stamps, groups of windows, and a coral reef) to develop and refine multiplication strategies and models. Unit 3 returns to addition and subtraction, this time focusing on strategies for computing with larger numbers.
In Units 4 and 5, students explore measurement, fractions, division, and multiplication of larger numbers. They estimate and make measurements in different units; explore unit fractions and equivalent fractions, and begin adding and subtracting fractions; they connect multiplication to division and extend multiplication strategies to larger numbers. Their work with multiplication develops a strong understanding of area.
Unit 6 focuses on geometry, as students investigate, draw, and build two-dimensional shapes, using their properties to classify and analyze these shapes. They also connect geometry to fractions as they express the area of a shape as a unit fraction of the whole. Unit 7 brings together and extends many of the skills and concepts addressed in earlier units as students solve challenging problems that involve calculating with multi-digit numbers. They explore algorithms for addition and subtraction and dig deeper into division. Students develop strategies and models for division, many of which are based on their work with multiplication.
Unit 8 integrates mathematics and science, with a primary focus on designing and building model bridges. Students test the strength of their model bridges in systematic ways to collect data. Then they graph and analyze the data, finding the range and mean, to make conjectures and draw conclusions about effective bridge design and construction.

I came to know about Math Buddy through their daily maths challenge questions. I wanted to give a try with Shrestha and took the trial class for her. And then enrolled to the classes. Unlike other classes which end up boring, the math buddy class kept her engaged and at the same time made her reasoning skills better and she was able to calculate in an easy way and also love attending the classes. She looks forward for her classes every week. Mr.Kannan is very calm, composed, kind, and handles the class with ease. Hats off to math buddy to bring this format where kids easily relate to the questions and reason. The ice breaker puzzles every week is like icing on the cake.
