Prepositions of time

Daisy is at home. She has a note for Sophie from the headmaster …

Instructions

As you watch the video, look at the examples of prepositions of time. They are in red in the subtitles. Then read the conversation below to learn more. Finally, do the grammar exercises to check you understand, and can use, prepositions of time correctly.

Daisy: Hi, Mum, How's it going?

Sophie: Fine thanks, honey. How was school?

Daisy: Good. I've got a note for you from Mr Oliveira.

Sophie: Who's Mr Oliveira? Your Portuguese teacher?

Daisy: I don't study Portuguese, Mum. You know that.

Sophie: True. But you could. It's a very useful language. They speak it in Brazil ...

Daisy: Mum, he's the new headmaster at college. And he isn't Portuguese – or Brazilian. He's British. But I think he said his parents are from Goa.

Sophie: Goa? Wow. The headmaster ... Ah yes, I remember him. I met him at Christmas when I went to your school for that concert. In December, anyway. A very nice man, yes.

Daisy: Mum ...

Sophie: It would be good to speak to him about his parents' country. I could interview him, then visit Goa in summer … no, too hot maybe ... in autumn ...

Daisy: Well, he'd like to see you again too.

Sophie: Really?

Daisy: He wants you to go into school on Monday or Tuesday next week.

Sophie: Oh? Have you done something wrong?

Daisy: No, of course not! You know me. He wants to ask if you can give a talk about your work and your blog, your travels, that sort of thing. One day in April, during Careers Week.

Sophie: So on Monday or Tuesday? What time?

Daisy: In the afternoon or in the early evening. At 5 o'clock, if you can.

Sophie: Hmm. I can go at half past four on Tuesday, if that's OK.

Daisy: I'll ask.

Sophie: Let me see. I'm away in Moscow for three days in April ... but during your school holidays, I think. I'm going to Russia to write about traditions at Easter – oh, and then I'm away again at the end of the month. But I'm at home for two or three weeks. I can't go on Monday evening, because I have a tai chi class, and then I have to work at night. I have a video call at midnight ... Yes, definitely. I'll go in on Tuesday afternoon.

Daisy: Can you write a note or send him an email, please?

Sophie: I'll phone him during the day tomorrow. I'm free for a few hours in the morning.

Daisy: OK, I'll tell him. Where are you?

Sophie: Here in town. I'm at the travel agent's. I'm chatting to your friend Jenna – I hadn't seen her for months! I didn't know she was working here; she's organising my flights to Russia. Do you want to speak to her?

Daisy: No, it's OK, I'll see her at the weekend. We're going to a party on Saturday night.

Sophie: OK, well I'll be home in about an hour – at about 7 o'clock probably. Pizza and a DVD tonight?

We use many different prepositions for talking about time. Here we are looking at: in , on , at , during and for .

We use in , on and at for lots of different times. Here’s a table comparing the uses:

Wow! That’s a lot of uses! So I have to learn all those?

Yes, but you probably know most of them, don’t you?

Yes, maybe … Is that all of them? I mean, are there any exceptions?

Well, sometimes we don’t use a preposition of time, for example after next / this / last / every .

We go skateboarding every Saturday afternoon. I’ll see you next Friday.

Mm, but I could also say: “ I’ll see you on Friday .”

Oh yes, that's fine too. But we often leave out on with days of the week when we’re speaking.

I’ll see you Friday.

OK. Now, about dates ... You write “ on 8th July ” but how do you say that?

Good question! We say “ on the eighth of July ”.

OK, so I have to remember to say “ on THE eighth OF July ”.

One last question about in . Can I use it for the future, as in “ I’ll do it in a minute ”?

Yes, that’s very common. We use in for talking about something in the future a certain length of time from now.

She’ll be back in a moment .                                                                  We’re going away in two weeks .

And can I say, “ We’re going away for two weeks ”?

Yes, but the meaning is completely different.

We’re going away in two weeks .  (= we leave two weeks from now) We’re going away for two weeks . (= our holiday will be two weeks long)

Ah, and what about “We’re going away during two weeks”?

No, you can’t say that. We use for + a length of time , to say how long something goes on for, and during + a noun / noun phrase , to say when something happens.

It snowed for three hours. It snowed during the night.

OK, that’s a useful rule. But, hang on, I can also say “ It snowed in the night ”.

Yes, absolutely.

And: “ I did a lot of work in the holidays ” or “ I did a lot of work during the holidays ”?

Yes, you’ve got the hang of this.

Good, so now I’m going to study for a few hours . I’ll see you on Tuesday , in the morning , at about 10 o’clock .

See you at some time during the morning!

How to Finish Your Homework

While studying can differ for different age groups, many of the things that get in the way are the same. Whether it's your environment or time management skills, it easy for things to discourage you from finishing your homework. With a little organization and help, your homework can become approachable.

Managing Your Time

Step 1 Set aside a specific time to do your homework.

  • For instance, try setting aside a time you know you can work well such as an hour or 2 before dinner, or if you're a night owl, after dinner.

Step 2 Take a break every hour.

  • Work in hour blocks, with 50 minutes spent studying and 10 minutes spent taking a break.
  • It can also be helpful to move around when you are taking your break, especially if you are working at a screen. Go for a walk outside to get your blood circulating and enjoy some fresh air.
  • You might also want to eat a healthy snack on your break to improve your focus. Avoid junk food and choose something like a handful of nuts, a piece of fruit, veggies, or a small portion of cottage cheese.

Step 3 Prioritize tasks.

  • Identify which assignments are worth the most points for each class. Most likely these will take the longest to complete. [5] X Research source
  • Consider how long you have to do each project, and if possible, see when the assignment is introduced. Oftentimes, primary and secondary school classes do not have syllabi, so it might be harder to plan out an entire term, but if you are in college, you will most likely have a syllabus with at least a partial course schedule. Knowing how long you have to complete an assignment will help you prioritize which assignments to do first. You can also ask the teacher how long you have to complete an assignment. [6] X Research source

Step 4 Create a study schedule.

  • Use highlighters or stickers to mark which assignments are most important.
  • If you're using an online or mobile schedule, create alerts or notifications for the projects and any time-sensitive steps for those projects.

Step 5 Make sure to complete the most pressing assignments first.

  • Don't let a big project overshadow the smaller assignments you need to complete!

Step 6 Break down larger projects into manageable tasks.

  • Assignment outlines can help you visualize the necessary tasks to get the assignment done.

Step 7 Don't multitask.

Creating a Productive Work Environment

Step 1 Find a comfortable, but not too comfortable, place to work.

  • A desk or table would be a better location than a couch or a bed.

Step 2 Minimize social distractions.

  • Turn your phone off or on silent (not vibrate). It might be best to put the phone out of sight, or in another room while you work, as the temptation to text or get on social media can be as much of a distraction as actually using social media.
  • Use an app that blocks social media. There are plenty of applications out there that can help block social media and other distracting sites (such as shopping or gaming sites). [10] X Trustworthy Source Pew Research Center Nonpartisan thinktank conducting research and providing information on public opinion, demographic trends, and social trends Go to source

Step 3 Minimize noise.

  • Use a white noise app to block out noise.
  • Use earplugs or noise-blocking earmuffs. [12] X Research source
  • Work in a quiet place, such as a library or a home office, if you have one.
  • Avoid listening to music while studying. Studies have shown that although listening to music while studying lowers overall performance, this does not affect everyone equally. [13] X Research source However listening to music before studying has been shown to improve performance on cognitive tasks. [14] X Research source

Step 4 Write down why you need to finish your homework.

Using Your Resources

Step 1 Ask your parents or peers for help.

  • If you're too afraid to ask a teacher during class, see if you can stay behind to ask your questions.

Step 3 Find a tutor (if available).

  • First, contact your school to see if there are any after-school tutoring programs. While not all primary and secondary schools offer tutoring, a vast majority of universities do. If your school does not offer tutoring, they may know of other resources for you to contact.
  • Then, contact your library to see if they offer any tutoring. [18] X Research source
  • In some areas, there may also be free community tutoring programs. Contact your local community center for more information.
  • There are plenty of private tutors out there as well, but they can be costly (ranging from $20 to $100 an hour). [19] X Research source You can find tutors online through a number of websites, such as Craigslist or Angie's list.

Step 4 Go to the library.

  • If you need to work at a library after school, ask your parents or search the web to find your local library.

Homework After School or After Dinner?

My 4th grader has a packet of homework to do before Thursday each week. It includes math, reading, writing, spelling words, etc. Afternoon seems the best time to do it because taking care of her little sister, dinner, baths, etc. are making evenings hectic. My hubby doesn't get home until 8pm M-F and so it's just me. Should I split it up so that she does math after school and reading in the evening or what? What works best for you and your kids? She really stuggles with math and sometimes it can take up to an hour to get it done.

What can I do next?

Why don't you ask her what she feels would work best for her. That way she's in on the planning and that can be a lesson in itself. She might be more compliant that way too. Have a great school year.

First of all, kids need a bit of a breather right after school, so give her a snack and let her work on the most difficult assignments first, If Math is difficult spread it out over the week. Give her choices of how o plan out the work, she will be better if she has some control over the work she does. You might consider having her read when she is in bed just after her bath time. Routines are the best! By the way, you may think about having a conversation with the teacher if Math is taking too long to complete or consider gettting a tutor to work with her. Good Luck!

Snack right when they walk in the door (10-15mins), then homework straightaway while their brains are still in "school" mode. If they do anything else before homework, they just can't refocus when it's time to do homework. That's what works for my kids, but other kids are different. Plus, I tend to schedule their occasional after school activities later in the day (after 5pm) so it's important for my kids to finish their homework first. By 4th grade, your daughter should be able to do her homework without you sitting by her side. Have her work on her own in the afternoons, then if there are specific problems she needs help with, have her save those to go over with you or dad later. I have my kids do the easy stuff first for a couple of reasons. 1) They succeed at it and it gives them a mental boost to tackle the difficult stuff. 2) If they start with the hard stuff, they'll burn out and be too mentally tired to complete even the easy stuff. I tell them "get through the easy stuff (in our case, spelling and reading), just blow through it, then if you need help with the hard stuff (math, usually), come to me". It seems to work just fine for our family.

i do my homework after dinner

My kids play and have a snack for a little while after school (half an hour or so) and then they do their homework. That way by dinner time, they are done with work and can relax (and take a bath, get their clothes ready for the next day, read before bedtime, etc.). Also on the days during the week when they have dance class, at least they are done with school work by the time we head to dance. I wouldn't want to leave homework to be done starting at 7:00. They're too tired to really focus at that point, and homework becomes a drudgery for all of us.

i do my homework after dinner

Sorry if this seems a short answer but I would definely recommend after school. Then you as a family can have some down time after dinner instead of spending all evening being stressed over homework. Best of luck B.

i do my homework after dinner

Depends on the child. I would probably ask the child when he/she would prefer (give a little power to give a little responsibility) to do the homework, and have a set time agreed upon every day......BUT, if homework is not complete after dinner then no t.v. (or whatever it is your 4th grader likes to do) until all homework is done.

After school is best and definitely start with the hardest thing first. However, we often did reading or spelling words together after dinner because those were more light hearted. My daughter would read to me and my son, like story time, and it seemed less a chore that way. If she had to write her spelling words 10 times each, we got that out of the way after school, but if she had to make up sentences, sometimes we saved that to do together depending on the circumstances or I'd have her read me her sentences.

The more you can get out of the way in the afternoons, the better, but saving the reading worked well for us.

Best wishes!

My daughter gets totally distrated if she doesn't do her homework as soon as she walks through the door. We've tried doing it after dinner and all that got us was her, my hubby and me all sitting around the table til 10 p.m. trying to get it finished accompanied by a mess of tears and sobs.

In our house---- Come home, wash hands, have a snack, brush teeth and get the homework done if you want to watch tv, go on the computer, or go outside. If they know about a test a few days beforehand, they don't leave studying to the day before, they do a little each day. Seems to work--one has a 99% average and the other a 96% average.

i do my homework after dinner

I second the snack after school then get down to work. The TV does not get turned on until the work is completed. My son just can't seem to focus very well after supper. Once supper and shower are done, there might be time for 1 TV show before bedtime, or he reads.

i do my homework after dinner

My rule (which applied to me when I was in school and later to my children) is when you get off the bus you have 15 - 30 minutes to get a snack, relax, play whatever...then start your homework. If they have an unusual amount, they can certain return to homework after dinner. Sounds like your child has several days worth of homework so completing all of it on any one night is not necessary...you could ask your child if they want to do a little of each subject each night or select one or two subjects a night until complete.

I nanny for a family. we walk home, have snack and right to the homework. better to get it over with. then some extra reading before bedtime.

Each child and each family is different. IMO what usually works best is to have a little down time immediately after school, go outside get some air, eat a snack, etc. Then to start on homework, this would probably be arround the time your starting dinner. Then if she needs some help, you can give her some full attention after dinner, the goal is for her to get it done before dinner.

I have found that after being in school all day my son needs to get a little energy out before doing homework. So once he hops off that bus we go outside for about 15 minutes to half hour come in snack and start homework usually math after dinner his younger brother gets a bath then my oldest will read to him. Once my youngest is in bed we do spelling words and a few flash cards. On nights he has soccer he has a snack and has to do homework right away. No outside fun for him.

After school. All after school.

My son does his right after his snack after school. 10 mins of after school homework could turn into O. hour of after dinner homework! It's just smoother for him after school and about 10 mins to relax.

All after school. She'll have too much down time if she waits till after dinner. It would be hard to get her motivated. Home, snack then start the HW.

AH, the eternal dilemma. One thing that i've learned is that homework is never-ending... and I mean never! If I started my kids on homework the minute they walk in the door, I could keep them busy until the minute they went to bed. Between the actual homework sheets, computer tutorials, spelling lists, math facts, ongoing reading to get AR points, tests, etc., I send them to bed every night realizing that not everything was accomplished. Add activities on top of that (we have girl scouts and dance), and the situation is even more complicated. For years, my husband and I have made evenings homework time. He gets home around 5:30, we eat, then we do homework altogether as a family. Now the activities are getting in the way of that, and I also care for 2 other children after school. So, they all do their written work after they grab a snack in the afternoon, and we save reading for the evening just before bedtime. This is not optimal as sometimes they are too tired to really focus on the reading, but I don't know what else to do. There are just not enough hours in the day to fit it ALL in. Some kids get tons of AR points (where do they find all that time to read?)-- we just have to focus on "meeting the required goal". As for the math facts, maybe we can try those on Saturdays! EH! Good luck.

I would give he a 30 min break and then start homework. This will give her time to get a snack and unwind after a long day at school.

i do my homework after dinner

after school is when we work on my daughters.

Hacer is the Spanish verb meaning "to do / to make". It is extremely versatile, and one common use is to express the weather or time. In this sense, it is different from English, whereby we would use "to be". For example: "hace frío" is how to say "it is cold", which directly translates to "it makes cold". An example regarding time: "Hace mucho tiempo que no te veo" means "It has been a long time since I have seen you". Again, the direct translation from English does not work in this case.

Similar verbs to hacer include: cumplir (to achieve), realizar (to carry out), fabricar (to make), preparar (to prepare), producir (to produce).

Should You Ever Cook Dinner on a First Date?

Drinks out are out, dinner in is in. We spoke to three pairs who made the risky choice of sharing a kitchen table with a stranger.

An illustration depicts a nervous man grating cheese over a pot as he looks at a skeptical woman with a clipboard sitting at his dining room table.

By Becky Hughes

Becky Hughes remains skeptical about a first date over dinner — at home or in a restaurant.

Food and love go hand in hand. For Valentine’s Day, we’re exploring this fiery connection in all stages of a relationship, from a first date to living together to breaking up .

When it comes to a first date, Jess Felton refuses to go for drinks, grab a coffee or take a walk. It’s either dinner or no date at all.

“Dinner dates used to be the standard,” said Ms. Felton, a 40-year-old influencer in Brooklyn, N.Y., who posts as @ohuprettythings on TikTok. “But dating has become so casual.”

To her, a dinner date is more than a meal. It’s a litmus test for how seriously a man takes her.

Indeed, any sort of first date can set the tone for a relationship — and presents a number of panic-inducing questions: Should you dress up, or down? Should you act like yourself (a person who spends an hour hyping herself up for a two-minute phone call) or an idealized version of yourself (a person who regularly brushes her hair)? Perhaps the most polarizing question of all: Should you go out to dinner?

The dinner date has become a contentious topic hotly debated in Reddit forums and group chats alike. Some singles demand it, like the woman who became a TikTok star by ordering 48 oysters, potatoes and crab cakes on what was meant to be a cocktail date. (She was left, unceremoniously, with the bill.)

Others warn gravely against it. You’re trapped at the table, at the whim of the service and with no exit route. And no matter how much you enjoyed the company, you may be stuck with a hefty tab at the end.

Drew Daniels is not opposed to a dinner date. In fact, he prefers an even more controversial approach: cooking for his date. “It’s uncomfortable to sit across from someone,” said Mr. Daniels, 31, a graduate student. “Being stuck at a restaurant, you can’t turn to the cutting board and chop something.”

For some, the knee-jerk reaction to a proposed cooking date is that the host is either broke, cheap or just trying to hook up . But Mr. Daniels persists. “You can work things you love into dating,” he said. “If someone was a birder, I would love to go birding on a first date.”

So what is it like to cook for — or be fed by — a stranger? We talked to three pairs who met for the first time over a meal at home to hear just how such a gesture was decided on — and received. The following interviews, which were conducted individually, have been edited for clarity and length.

See recipes for Valentine’s Day dinner and chocolaty desserts here.

Mr. Daniels matched with Savannah Tate Cuff, a 30-year-old artist in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, on Hinge the day she left for a trip to Nepal. The two kept in touch for the next month and decided that Mr. Daniels would cook dinner for her the day she returned.

What he made: Bucatini amatriciana

Drew: She had a layover in Rome and picked up a bottle of wine there, so I chose a pasta pairing for that. And I made a very simple salad with butter lettuce and a janky vinaigrette of lemon and olive oil.

Savannah: I think it was a great first date. It was definitely unusual. It’s the only first date I’ve had where a guy cooked for me. In normal circumstances, I probably wouldn’t have done that, especially going to a guy’s house as a first date. But since we’d already been talking for a month, it seemed like it was OK.

Drew: I love the cooking part. The eating part, sitting across from someone in your house, I find a bit awkward. We made this beautiful meal and ate it essentially standing. Something about sitting down at a table — I rarely do it.

Savannah: Generally, drinks are the way to go, because you don’t know the person. And you just need a sense for the person in real life.

The verdict:

For their second date, they kept things similarly unconventional. Ms. Tate Cuff visited Mr. Daniels at his school. Ultimately it didn’t work out.

“I have a boyfriend now,” she said. “And our first date was just drinks.”

Recipe: Make bucatini amatriciana for your second date

Nicole Karr, a 38-year-old private chef, and Meg Ten Eyck, a 36-year-old founder of an L.G.B.T.Q. travel site, met on Hinge. For their first date, Ms. Karr invited Ms. Ten Eyck to her apartment in Astoria, Queens.

What she made : Homemade spaghetti alla chitarra with pomodoro

Nicole: It’s very common for everyone to ask me to cook for them. It didn’t start off that way with Meg. When people ask, I don’t want to do it. But if they don’t ask, I want to.

Meg: My first thought was, “OK, stranger danger.” But we had mutual people, so I was confident she wasn’t a 70-year-old ax murderer. I did some asking around to make sure she was a reasonable human being.

Nicole: My thing is kind of, “Come over, I’ll make you pasta.” And I’ll have tomato sauce on the stove cooking so it smells good when they come in.

Meg: She’s a chef. Is this just her move to flex her skills?

Nicole: I didn’t realize it, but maybe it is.

After two subsequent dates, the two decided to be “casually friends,” Ms. Ten Eyck said. “Not like besties or anything.”

Recipe: Make pasta al pomodoro for your second date

Jack Glaser, a 26-year-old graduate student at the University of Chicago, and Leah Grynheim, a 27-year-old educator, were set up in Chicago by a mutual friend. After the weather derailed plans for coffee and a walk, Mr. Glaser suggested dinner at his apartment. (He used a New York Times Cooking recipe .)

What he made: Mapo tofu with steamed bok choy and rice

Jack: I wanted to make something that was vaguely impressive. Maybe something spicy, something stovetop where there was going to be sounds and smells.

Leah: It was a little too peppery for me, but I enjoyed it. I mostly sat there and drank wine while he cooked, but I was ready to chop something.

Jack: She offered to do the dishes and I didn’t let her, which I thought was perfect.

Leah : There was one point where I told him what to do, when I saw him start the rice cooker without the lid on. But he put the steamer with bok choy on the rice cooker, and then put the lid on. I’m used to being the one cooking, so I couldn’t get my brain out of that.

Jack: I have these tea candles in cute little holders. I lit them, and I was like, “Wait a second, it looks like you’re walking into a sauna.” So I blew them out and waited until we were about to start eating. Then I was like, “Oh, we should light these candles!” I didn’t want it to seem over-designed.

Leah: He had a dinner playlist on.

Jack : Compared to going to a bar, there are more decisions to make. You go to a bar, you’re not deciding the lighting, you’re not deciding the music, nothing can be blamed on you. With all of the variables in your control, there are that many opportunities to make a faux pas.

The two made plans to meet again over hot toddies and a game of chess at a bar. But three days before the second date, Mr. Glaser bailed. “It was a bummer,” Ms. Grynheim said. “He texted me: ‘I have to cancel, I want to be a little more conservative with my casual dating right now.’” Mr. Glaser, for his part, cited a lack of chemistry.

But he did take someone else out for drinks recently — and told her about his foray into cooking for a stranger. Over beers, his date told him she would have preferred homemade mapo tofu.
