What's the Status of Remote Jobs in the UK?

How Popular Is Remote Work Across the UK?

In 2012, 4.2 million people in the UK worked from home, either full- or part-time. In 2018, 4.4% of the entire workforce in the UK, from ages 15-64, was working remotely. Remote work is becoming increasingly popular year after year, and it is easy to understand why.

Staff members are happier with the increased freedom to set their own schedule and maintain a work life balance, not to mention the cost and time savings from eliminating the daily commute. It’s also worth noting that tech firms are some of the best work from home companies because of their innovative, forward-thinking cultures.

Aimed at company HR leaders, 15Five is a human-centred performance management platform. Its products include tools for management training, employee feedback surveys, performance reviews and more.  

The company has a diverse, hybrid culture that supports remote-first workplaces and office hubs. They encourage annual get-togethers for their team and offer health, retirement and vacation benefits.

The company includes some exciting benefits for its employees, including well-being, education, generous salaries, and profit-sharing.

The well-known online retailer hires home based virtual employees in a huge variety of roles including web services, HR and sales. There are jobs at all levels including senior management roles. When we looked, most roles were in the US and UK, with several in Italy.

Positions available depend on your experience and skills. Some positions are seasonal roles and come up during the company’s busier periods only. So, if you’re looking for jobs that are hiring now, then Amazon is a good place to start.

Apple employ students ( more online jobs for students here ) but there are positions available for others too as part of the “At Home Advisor” program. You need at least 2 years’ experience of technical troubleshooting – this can be either by phone or face to face.

You need an excellent knowledge of all Apple products, and must agree to work at least 20 hours per week.

This is designed to give the whole company a feel for the main product. All employees continue to spend a further two weeks per year doing this.

There are also roles in the wider company in sales, legal and finance. This is a remote-first company, and everyone works “asynchronously”, during the hours that suit them best.

KLIM Technologies

KLIM is a small, but rapidly growing, consumer electronics company. Despite its size, it is committed to fully remote work and is willing to hire the best workers no matter where they are located.

As the market leader in enterprise application software SAP has a lot of great opportunities for those looking for tech jobs. You will have to do some searching to find the work from home roles but it is worth it to find a job at a top company which offers competitive salaries and plenty of perks.

Anthem employs over 35,000 professionals across the US. The company offers medical and health roles, as you would expect, but also has many openings in sales, business support, data analysis, and customer service.

You should search for “remote” jobs on the site in order to find those for which they hire home workers.

This leading health care benefits company employs remote workers in a number of roles. Medical advisors must hold the appropriate qualifications and have clinical experience. Jobs are available at all levels and include senior management positions.

Training takes place at company offices. Some roles, despite being home based, require applicants to live within a certain distance of a specific office.

There are additional benefits available alongside basic salary, dependent on the role applied for.

The remote-first site offers backpackers and travellers the chance to write and work while they travel. Most positions are flexible and freelance and so don’t share employee benefits.

Hertz often recruits for home-based positions. We’ve seen roles for sales reps and reservation agents in the past, but at the time of writing a search yielded some supervisory and management roles as well.

Hertz is a huge company, so it’s well worth checking their listings regularly.

Where: US, Canada, UK.

Hilton Hotels

This worldwide hotel chain hires home-workers as reservation agents and customer care co-ordinators. You need previous sales experience and at least a high school diploma. Jobs are available in a number of US states.

The job and associated training is all done remotely. Salary and other incentives are the same as for onsite employees. Most of the equipment you need is provided, though you will need a landline and a quiet workspace.

Although there were no homeworking openings available at the time of writing, the Hilton Reservations and Customer Care Work From Home program is a clear indication of their dedication to hiring home workers during normal times.

This airline offers remote working opportunities for customer support. You need to attend training on-site at a base in Utah or Orlando before beginning to work from home.

This might seem like a simple job to apply for but the company is very serious about the quality of its tutors and so only 1.5% of all applicants make it through the rigorous testing process to become qualified as tutors.

This English language-learning services company offers ESL services to children in China, providing a high-quality English education for children up to eight years of age. The company hires online ESL teachers that can work remotely from anywhere.

The companies that let you work from anywhere – and how much they pay

I t has been three years since Boris Johnson ordered Britain to work from home, but while lockdown may thankfully be a distant bad memory, remote working is still alive and well.

Figures published today by RSM UK, an accountancy firm, show a third of companies have taken the concept one step further – and allow employees to work not just from home, but anywhere else in the world.

It added that of the 170 companies it spoke to which are embracing so-called “work from anywhere” policies, 30pc had no restrictions on the amount of time workers spent abroad.

Some major British companies have adopted these ultra-flexible working policies with bosses seeing a spike in jobseekers turning their backs on offices in favour of beaches.

Despite fears of an impending recession and other economic woes, unemployment remains incredibly low, handing employees greater bargaining power when negotiating with employers. Searches for “fully remote” roles soared by 21pc in the first three months of the year, according to Flexa Careers, a site for flexible jobs.

Which sectors are most likely to offer full remote jobs? 

Data from jobsite Adzuna showed the majority were in IT, public relations, and sales.

Adzuna’s Paul Lewis said: “The rise of ‘work from anywhere’ is a response to shifting priorities and the demand for more. Since January 2021, we’ve seen steady increases in employers offering the perk, with big brands like Spotify pioneering the way.”

Indeed, remote jobs at the streaming giant have an average salary of £43,861, according to job vacancy listings on Adzuna.

Other big businesses with fully remote policies include vintage clothes marketplace Depop, charity Blood Cancer UK, apprenticeship platform Multiverse, founded by Sir Tony Blair’s son Euan, and nutritional shake maker Huel. Data published by Flexa Careers showed 6pc of advertised jobs in March were “fully remote”, while 19pc were billed as “remote first”.

Among these was digital bank Zopa, which already allows employees to work 120 days a year from abroad, although it is considering increasing this to 130 days. Wise, formerly Transfer Wise, a foreign exchange firm, lets staff work from anywhere for 90 days a year once they have worked for six months.

“Buy now pay later” credit provider Klarna (average salaries of £53,000 according to Adzuna) and digital bank Revolut (£41,000) also offer employees the opportunity to work abroad.

Employees spend, on average, 49 minutes a day working from home – down from its previous peak of one hour and nine minutes, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Despite calls from leading Conservatives – including Chancellor Jeremy Hunt – a heated labour market has left companies no choice but to offer flexible working, lest they lose out in the so-called talent war.

Some companies have been known to offer “house-swapping” policies that allow employees based in different countries to trade homes to work remotely from abroad.

Tax headache

Adzuna data shows average salaries for jobs billed as “remote” are £41,779 – and 132,807 vacancies are currently listed in the UK. However, working abroad can be a “tax minefield”, warned Joanne Webber, of RSM UK.

She said: “There will be different tax rules depending on the country an individual chooses to work from, so employees venturing into work-from-anywhere arrangements need to set parameters for staff and have a clear company policy in place, so everyone understands the risks.”

Accountancy firm PwC said employees working remotely abroad may need to acquire tax residency but usually only if they work outside of Britain for more than 183 days in a 12-month period.

It also warned employees against accidentally triggering residency elsewhere and said employers could have “significant corporate tax implications” if an employee working abroad has created a “permanent establishment”. The risk is higher if the employee is senior and is client facing or works in business development, PwC said.

There are often financial consequences when an employee works remotely abroad. For example, an employee may acquire tax residency in another country or jurisdiction. This usually won’t be the case if an employee works remotely outside the UK for less than 183 days in a 12-month period.

However, care should be taken to monitor any other factors that might trigger residency in addition to days spent in the jurisdiction. If an employee does work for more than 183 days in another country, specialist advice should be sought immediately.

If your income has been taxed twice, by HMRC and the country you work in, you can usually claim some of it back via Foreign Tax Credit Relief (FTCR), as part of a self-assessment tax return. 

How much you can claim will depend on whether a double taxation agreement is in place between Britain and the country you’re working from. Even if there is one, limits will vary. 

Employers should understand their obligations in relation to reporting and collecting tax in other jurisdictions and should bear in mind that they will be held responsible for ensuring their employees’ tax payments are calculated correctly and that they comply with any local social security reporting requirements.

There are also potentially significant corporate tax implications if it is found that an employee working remotely abroad has created a “permanent establishment” for their employer in the relevant jurisdiction.

The risk of this happening could arise if the employee’s role involves concluding contracts on behalf of their employer, if the employee is senior and conducts significant client-facing or if they perform business development work.

Remote working in the UK has exploded over the last few years, driven by improvements in workplace technology and boosted by the effects of lockdown restrictions.

But now that the lockdowns are over, what are the facts and figure behind remote working in Britain? How many of us work from home? How many work a hybrid week? And what are the effects on our work, wallets, health, and employers’ businesses?

We pulled together all the latest figures from the ONS and numerous other major publications to bring you the latest remote working statistics for the UK for 2023.

  • 44% of UK British people work from home at least some of the time (hybrid or full-time remote)
  • The amount of people working exclusively from home in the UK has decreased by 14% from 2022 to 2023.
  • 16% of UK workers  currently work exclusively from home in 2023.
  • 1 in 4 UK workers now work a hybrid work week.
  • Only 10% of hybrid worker s want to return to a fully remote work model.
  • Over half of all UK employers are offering remote work in 2023.
  • 78% of remote workers report an improved work-life balance.

How many people are working remotely in the UK in 2023?

According to the ONS 44% of UK workers currently work remotely in 2023 , which is made up of 16% full-time remote workers, and 28% hybrid workers (who split their time between home and the office).

Although remote working has become increasingly common in the last few years, it has been gradually increasing since the 1980s – it has also decreased significantly since the peak of the Covid-19 restrictions and lockdowns.

In this graph we look at the numbers of people who are working remotely in the UK and how this has changed in recent times.

How may people work from home 2023

  • In 2023 the amount of people working exclusively remotely has dropped by 14% from 2022
  • 58% of employers are offering remote work to all viable staff in 2023.
  • In 2022 the amount of people working remotely in the UK was 30% of the workforce – a 7% decrease from 2021.
  • In 2020 , following the first ever national lockdown, 37% of the UK’s working population worked remotely at some point in the year – an increase of 10% from the previous year.
  • 27% of the UK workforce had reported working remotely at some point in 2019 , just under 4 million people.
  • For the duration of the first UK lockdown 60% of people worked from home.
  • Over 20 million people worked remotely for UK companies in 2021.
  • Of all remote workers surveyed by the ONS, only 14% were planning to work remotely before news of the pandemic broke .
  • Only 12% of UK workers claim to have always worked remotely pre-pandemic.
  • According to a recent WISERD report only 1.5% of UK workers worked remotely in 1981.

Hybrid working is the practice of splitting an employees working week between working at home, and visiting the office. Since the end of the Covid-19 lockdowns, this flexible approach to work has grown in popularity, providing a wealth of benefits to staff and businesses.

Here are the numbers behind hybrid working in 2023.

  • According to the ONS 1 in 4 workers now work a hybrid working model.
  • 40% of UK employers now offer a hybrid working model according to a recent TravelPerk survey.
  • Only 3 in 10 UK companies require staff to work fully on-site in 2023 – this number has halved from 6 in 10 since the pandemic.

Whilst a large number of Brits have worked remotely in recent times, the likelihood of us being able to work remotely depends on many factors including our age, sex, profession, industry and salary.

So, who are the people working remotely, and who are the people who aren’t?

How does age, sex, location and education affect your chances of being able to work remotely?

  • The 25–34 year-old age group are the most likely to be working remotely , with 54% of them working remotely.
  • 16 – 24 year olds are least likely to be working remotely , with only 30% of the group undertaking remote work.
  • Londoners are more likely to be remote workers than any other UK region, and people in the West Midlands are least likely to pick up remote work.
  • Women are slightly more likely to be working remotely by a margin of just 2%.
  • Those with a degree are twice as likely to obtain remote work than non- graduates .

Professions of remotes workers

Some jobs can be carried out with just a laptop and internet connection, whereas others simply cannot exist without the physical presence of an employee. This creates a big divide between the types of workers who can work remotely and those who can’t.

  • Professional occupations (lawyers, accountants etc.) – 69%
  • Managers , directors and senior officials – 67%
  • Administrative and secretarial positions – 63%

  • Skilled tradespeople – 19%
  • Sales and customer service – 15%
  • Carers , leisure workers and other service roles – 15%

Industries of remote workers

Some industries rely heavily on the physical presence of their staff, whereas others can function largely through technology and a “virtual presence”.

So, which industries have the most remote staff?

  • Those working within IT and communications have the highest chance of working remotely with over 80% working remotely in 2021
  • Accommodation and food services – 8%
  • Transportation and storage – 16%
  • Health and social work – 18%

Salaries of remote workers

How much money you earn can have a big impact on your likelihood of working remotely. Here we look at the income bands of remote workers.

Earning of people working from home

  • Less than 1 in 20 working people who earn less than £20,000 per year have the option to work from home
  • 94% of people earning over £50,000 per year can choose to work form home if they wish
  • The majority of people earning over £20,000 per year are choosing a hybrid working model , splitting their time between home and the office.

Employment status of remote workers

Whether you are a permanent staff member, contractor or freelancer, your employment status has an effect on your chances of finding remote work.

  • Permanent employees are least likely to work remotely with 64% of them working remotely.
  • Contractors and freelancers are the most likely to work remotely , at 74% and 89%

Who is not working remotely?

Whilst much of the UK population are enjoying the flexibility of remote work, there is a significant portion of people who cannot work remotely.

  • Delivery drivers, catering staff, buildings maintenance workers and front-line nursing staff have a 0% chance of working remotely
  • 22% of UK employers do not allow remote work , including 67% of construction companies and 72% of healthcare providers.

Which companies hire remote workers?

Many firms have been actively encouraging remote work throughout the pandemic and continue to do so. But not all employers are so keen to embrace the world of remote working.

  • 58% of all UK employers are offering remote work for viable roles in 2023.
  • 80% of company directors and leaders have allowed some form of remote work from 2020 onward
  • Globally 16% of employers are operating on a fully remote basis, with no office or physical workspaces at all.

Remote work may have been increasing in recent years, but do staff actually want to work from home?

  • According to a recent YouGov poll 57% of British workers want the option to work from home .
  • A 2023 McKinsey survey found that 87% of employees who are offered remote or hybrid work, will accept it.

Remote working can offer a huge range of benefits from time saved on commuting and office-leasing, to reducing pollution and boosting productivity .

  • The average British worker saves 5 hours per week by cutting out their commute – totalling 240 hours per year
  • Remote or hybrid workers are 4 times more likely to get a face-to-face GP appointment within one week – due to the ability to attend during standard working hours
  • 44% of workers have been able change their work pattern to benefit them

How much money are we saving through remote work?

  • The average remote working Brit is saving a total of £44.78 per week by cutting out commuting and lunch costs
  • British workers commuting by train are saving an average of £136 per month on work-related travel
  • Commuters who drive to work are saving an average of £80 per week in petrol and parking costs.
  • On average workers are spending less than half of their usual lunch-time food spend.
  • UK businesses with a part-remote work force are saving 45% on office cleaning services, 36% on catering, and 36% on rent and utilities.
  • More than one in five companies claim that remote work has reduced their staff absentee rate, reducing their sick-pay spend.
  • A Capgemini report suggests that having a mostly-remote work force can slash operational costs by a third .
  • London businesses could save an average of £75,312 per year if just 20% of their staff worked remotely.

Productivity

Although many employers will worry about their staff’s work efforts whilst working out-of-sight, many employees and companies report boosts in productivity.

  • Two thirds of employees claim they are more productive when working at home
  • 75% of workers say that they are more productive when working at home, because of the lack of distractions from colleagues.
  • More than half of UK bosses think that their teams are more productive when working a home.
  • 58% of employees say that working remotely gives them more autonomy.
  • 3 in 10 people think that they can get more work done at home, than they can in the office.
  • 55% of people claim that they can concentrate better when working at home.
  • Three major studies (JD Edwards, American Express, and Compaq) found that remote workers are between 15% – 45% more productive than their office counterparts

Mental health & wellbeing

In addition to financial and time savings, some employees also claim that remote work is improving their wellbeing.

  • More than half of employees claim to be happier and have more job satisfaction when working remotely.
  • 33% of remote workers have been able to dedicate more time to their hobbies, interests and family.
  • Those who work from home are able to dedicate at least an extra 30 minutes to exercise every week.
  • Remote workers report that the cutting out their commute was the biggest benefit to their mental health.

Environment

Outside of our own work and life, many reports claim that remote work provides a host of benefits to the environment.

  • During the first national lockdown CO2 emissions reduced by 25% across the country
  • If every office-based worker in the UK worked remotely 50% of the time, it would stop the production of 54 million tonnes of greenhouse gas , the equivalent of taking 10 million cars off the road.
  • Due to reduced consumption of single-use plastics, remote workers will use less than half the amount of plastic as office-based staff .
  • Remote workers use 27% less energy than office workers, due to their ability to switch of lights and heating whilst at home.

Working from home isn’t always a positive experience for everyone.

Here we look at some of the more commonly reported negative effects of remote work.

Mental health & wellbeing (negative)

Whilst some employees report positive benefits on their mental health, wellbeing seems to be the area with the largest negative impact in remote work.

  • 29% of people think that working from home is detrimental to their overall health and wellbeing.
  • 67% of workers say that they feel less connected to their colleagues when working from home.
  • 1 in 5 workers struggle with loneliness when working from home.
  • 25% of Brits are working from a bedroom or sofa, and half of those people have developed Musco-skeletal problems
  • 34% of Brits working at home say that it has placed a strain on relationships with partners and children.

Work-life balance (negative)

Creating a clear divide between work and home-life is another key issue for remote staff when trying to find a good work life balance .

  • 22% of people find it hard to switch off after finishing a day of working a home.
  • 35% of home workers feel they have to be at their computer all day in order to respond quickly .
  • 3 in 10 Brits find it hard to separate their home lives from their work lives
  • 31% of workers feel they have to be twice as productive when working remotely.
  • More than half of remote workers feel they are working longer and taking less breaks.
  • One third of workers feel they will be overlooked for promotion if they have been working remotely.
  • 36% of people think that it’s harder to make an impact when working from home.

Where do remote workers work?

Not all remote workers work from home, and those who do may work from different areas of their home. According to RSPH, 25% of Brits work from their bedroom or sofa , 52% work in the kitchen , 12% work outside of the home (in coffee shops and shared workspaces) and 11% have a dedicated office room to work from.

7 in 10 home workers feel that they lack the right equipment to carry out their job, with 38% of people claiming they miss having a printer the most .

Searching and recruiting for remote jobs

Online job adverts for remote work have increased by 307% since the first national lockdown, but still account for only 8% of total job adverts according to Adzuna.

And the option of remote work has become an almost essential benefit for employers to offer, with 64% of recruiters saying that being able to pitch a work-from-home policy to candidates helps them find high-quality talent.

Future of remote work

It doesn’t look like remote work is going anywhere fast according to these numbers.

  • According to the BBC, 50 of the UK’s biggest firms have no future plans to return all of their staff to the office full-time.
  • 28% of British workers would like to work from home permanently in the future.
  • 44% of Brits would like to adopt a hybrid model of working, splitting their time between home and the office.
  • 87% of UK businesses have adapted to hybrid working .
  • 85% of managers believe that having remote workers will become the new normal for many teams.
  • In 2021 HSBC offloaded 40% of its office space globally , Lloyds Banking Group shed 20% of theirs.

Working from home can bring big health benefits, study finds

A review of 1,930 papers into home working found major pluses, but also downsides such as antisocial hours and being overlooked for promotion

Working from home allows people to eat more healthily, feel less stressed and have lower blood pressure, according to a large-scale review of academic literature on post-pandemic workplaces.

Yet remote workers are also more likely to eat snacks, drink more, smoke more and put on weight, the study found. And employers who believe that people working from home are lazy should think again – they are less likely to take time off sick, tend to work longer hours and to work evenings and weekends.

The review , funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research Health Protection Research Unit in Emergency Preparedness and Response – a partnership between the UK Health Security Agency, King’s College London, and the University of East Anglia – considered 1,930 academic papers on home working, teleworking and other types of hybrid and home working in an effort to distil the often contradictory research.

Prof Neil Greenberg, a psychiatrist at King’s College London and one of the study’s authors, said the study showed that workers and employers needed to start considering home working with the same seriousness as they did office working.

“In the old days of office working, people realised that if you put everyone in the same room with no sound-proofing, it was all unpleasant and you didn’t have a very productive workforce,” he said.

“Now that we’ve shifted to a home working culture, it makes sense for organisations and the government to make sure that people who are home working are doing it in as effective a way as possible.”

The review, published in the Journal of Occupational Health , identified three themes – the working environment at home, the effect on workers’ lives and careers, and the effect on their health. Greenberg said the research showed that there were winners and losers in many areas of home working. The working environment depended on how much space there was at home, the available equipment and on how much control workers had over their day.

People on higher incomes often enjoyed home working more, but those with more responsibilities at home such as childcare or housework – often women and those living alone – tended to be more stressed.

“Overall, people felt more productive at home,” Greenberg said. “It was particularly good for creative things, but much more difficult dealing with tedious matters. A lot of people worried about career prospects – this feeling that if you’re not present in the office, you’re going to get overlooked.”

Effects on health were clearer. The transition to home working during Covid was linked “with an increase in intake of vegetables, fruit, dairy, snacks, and self-made meals; younger workers and females benefited the most in terms of healthier eating,” the paper said.

One of the studies reviewed found that 46.9% of employees working from home had gained weight, and another put the figure at 41%. Most of the papers reviewed showed that homeworkers were more sedentary.

Greenberg said: “Managers needed to think about finding ways to support their homeworkers and help create their working environment.

“There’s a great adage in science that at some point, we need to stop admiring the problem and actually think about solutions,” he said. “We know quite a lot now. So we need to ask ‘what is the best training for an individual who’s going to become a partial homeworker?’ What we don’t need to do is to ask ‘would it be helpful to train someone to homework?’ The answer is clearly yes.”

Since the end of Covid restrictions in 2022, some companies have insisted that employees return to the office full-time, with firms such as JP Morgan requiring managers to be in five days a week.

“If companies like JP Morgan are afraid that people at home will be slacking, or won’t be doing a good job, and they can’t keep an eye on them, then I think that is an outdated concept,” Greenberg said.

Refusing WFH options will mean that talented employees may find other jobs, and makes companies less flexible in the event of future crises, such as another health emergency or strikes or severe weather conditions that prevent people from reaching their offices, he added.

“If they are doing it merely out of fear, then they risk being left behind,” he said. “We looked at a huge amount of evidence of the years and what our review shows is that there are ways to make the home working approach actually work well for the organisation and also for the employee.”

London workers are starting to attend their offices on Fridays more, new figures suggest, but the return is a “slow crawl back rather than a rush” to pre-pandemic levels....

As we approach the fourth anniversary of the UK's first Covid lockdown, numerous employers are looking at how their office use has changed, for better or worse, and considering what the next steps are on how their working week model should look.

First there was WFH (working from home) with people ordered to do their jobs remotely where possible, then as pandemic rules loosened TWaT (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays) in headquarters was embraced as hybrid working became flavour of the month, well flavour of the last three years. But could FOW (Friday Office Work) be the latest acronym HR bosses have on their radar?

That last acronym for office days is one quickly drawn up by yours truly, so may not be widely adopted, but the meaning certainly looks to be gaining popularity. After years of the capital's office areas and stations looking very quiet on a Friday, latest figures suggest more workers are now making the commute into towns at the end of the week.

But is this a temporary boost or longer term? And are UK employers leading the march back to Friday office working or leaving staff to do jobs remotely at the end of the typical working week?

Looking at latest numbers points to busier workspaces on a Friday. Property giant Landsec , which owns just over six million sq ft of office space , of which around 95% is in London, reveals in January it saw the number of people coming into the office across its portfolio on a Friday rise to its highest level since 2022.

A spokesman for the developer adds: "Whilst mid-week is undoubtably the most popular time for people to come together, on a like for like basis, the amount of unique daily turnstile tap-ins at our workspaces continues to grow across the week.”

At flexible space provider Workspace, SMEs have long embraced three-to four days a week in as the normal, including pre-pandemic. But Will Abbott, the landlord's chief customer officer says: “We have however seen the number of customers working from work on Fridays rise over the past year. Many of our customers are in creative and design-based industries such as podcast production and fashion design, which means they don’t just work at rows of desks, and use their space throughout the week, including Fridays."

Meanwhile data compiled for the Evening Standard by job search engine Adzuna found the number of UK postings advertising that Fridays can be worked from home was 123 last month. That was a dip on 135 recorded in January 2023. During the same period the number of recruitment adverts offering 'early finish Fridays' dropped to 396 from 429.

However, a mix of office and remote working still remains popular, with the proportion of vacancies specifying that they are hybrid standing at 11.4% from 11.6% a year earlier.

Adzuna co-founder Andrew Hunter says: “Cities up and down the country are starting to buzz again all week long, as workers ramp up their days in the office. In particular, fewer companies are advertising that employees can work from home on Fridays or clock off early for the weekend, but we’re seeing a slow crawl back to Fridays in the office, rather than a rush."

There are examples of some businesses putting their foot down when it comes to showing your face in the office on a Friday, such as French beauty giant L'Oréal. The Sunday Times reported earlier this month that the firm, whose London head office in White City, has told employees to come to the office at least two Fridays a month. Staff are required to be in offices three days per week typically.

However among FTSE 100 companies there appears to be no obvious signs of compulsory attendance in workspaces on a Friday. The Evening Standard spoke to various members of London's blue chip index about how many days staff are in per week and if they have encouraged or mandated that employees come into the office on a Friday. Of the respondents, which span sectors such as venture capital, telecoms, retail and more, hybrid working continues to be popular and FOW (Friday Office Work) is not enforced.

Take data technology company Experian UK&I where it is recommended teams are in twice a week. Chief people officer Rachel Duncan says: "We haven’t and don’t intend to mandate a return to the office, our hybrid approach to working is well established." Tesco does not mandate which days, but teams often meet in person around two days per week, while at asset manager M&G workers have been asked to attend an office on three days per week by the end of 2024. A company spokesman adds: "Our approach is based on trust, communication and flexibility."

At software group Sage staff tend to work from the firm’s offices around two to three days per week in support of a framework called Flexible Human Work (there is flexibility as to what these days are).

“This is based on team agreements and focused on outcomes and trust, it allows teams to experiment with how, when and where they work. This supports our aim to unlock flexibility across all areas of our operations, as well as attracting and retaining a more diverse range of talent,” a spokesman says.

On the small business side, Nick Thornton who leads PR agency Aver says the team of around 10 has agreed a policy to work the same three days in the office weekly.

He found that at first people would come in at various points and it "became clear very quickly this was not the right approach; we had too many days with too few people together to properly function as either a team or a company with a shared culture".

Thornton says: "Switching to the same three days, which we put to a team vote to determine the combination of days, was absolutely the right thing to do." There is no requirement to be in town on a Friday, but the team all understand that, if a meeting necessitates it, they will be in the office on a Friday.

While those that get the tube or train in on a Friday may observe journeys look a little busier, the once regular experience of packed carriages in zone one are still a distant memory in many cases at the end of the week. Central London retailers and restaurants would certainly welcome more office workers back in.
