American Airlines offers a Premium Economy cabin on most of its long-haul fleet and this is a review of the airline’s product on its Boeing 777-200 aircraft flying between London Heathrow and Los Angeles. With a flying time scheduled at well over 10 hours, there was plenty of time to get a good sense of what the American Airlines Premium Economy cabin and service are all about.

American Airlines 777-200 Premium Economy Cabin

The Premium Economy cabin in the American Airlines 777-200 is made up of just three rows of eight seats set in a 2-4-2 layout.

a screenshot of a chart

All three rows in the cabin are aligned and unlike in the airline’s 777-300ER aircraft , there is no exit row here so the cabin’s first row doesn’t offer anywhere near as much room as you’ll find in the first row of the Premium Economy cabin on the larger aircraft.

a seat in an airplane

Also, where the 777-300ER’s Premium Economy cabin is separated from Business Class by and exit row and a block of lavatories, the 777-200 only has a small wall and some curtains dividing the top and middle cabins.

a man sitting in a chair

Premium Economy Cabin Verdict

If you’re seated in one of the seats on either side of the aircraft the cabin feels relatively airy but from one of the central seats, there’s not a great sense of space. With just three rows this is one of the smaller cabins you’ll find on a transatlantic wide-body aircraft, but the fact that there are 8 seats across the cabin and 24 seats in total, means that this is still a cabin more closely related to Economy than anything higher.

American Airlines 777-200 Premium Economy Seats

The seats in this cabin are 19″ wide and offer 38″ of pitch (legroom) and are a big improvement on the considerably tighter conditions you’ll find a few rows back in the Economy Class cabin.

the seats in an airplane

A key difference between the seats in the Premium Economy cabin’s second and third rows and the seats in the first row is that the bulkhead seats come fitted with full extendable leg-rests…

a row of seats in an airplane

…while the other rows have seats with footrests that extend from under the seat directly ahead.

a pedals on a seat

Storage space is at a premium around these seats. There’s a magazine rack (full of magazines) and small netted pouch on the back of the seat directly ahead…

a screen on a device

…and there’s a small storage space hidden away under the center armrests (you have to raise the top panel of the armrest to access it properly).

a seat with a pillow in it

Overall there’s probably just enough storage around the non-bulkhead seats to keep most people happy – the netted pouch will hold most personal electronic devices (although not many at one time) and the storage area under the center armrest is big enough to store small handheld devices, books (as long as they’re not too thick), cables and other small items….and there’s always the area under the seat ahead where you can store a small bag.

In the bulkhead seats, the story is a little different as there’s no netted pouch directly ahead and there’s nowhere to store a small bag (because there’s no seat ahead of you) so these seats have considerably less space for passengers to store the personal items they’d like to keep close to hand. If you like to keep a lot of items near you when you travel, bear this in mind when selecting your seats.

The seat’s universal power outlet, the USB socket, and the headphone jack are all to be found in the storage area under the armrest…

a close up of a device

…and, for added comfort, the armrests on the aisles can be raised…

a seat belt on a plane

…or lowered.

a seat belt on a plane

It’s also in these armrests that American has hidden away the tray table.

a seat on an airplane

The tray table can open out to act as a small drinks table…

a silver rectangular object on a person's lap

…or it can be opened up to its full extent at which point it’s a little larger than a 15″ Macbook.

a silver rectangular object with hinge

If you’re sitting in one of the aisle seats you’ll find that although the legroom is fine, there’s a verticle bar under the seat ahead which can get in the way if you want to stretch out your legs (the window seats didn’t appear to have this issue).

a seat with a metal arm rest

To stretch out properly you have to angle your legs towards the middle of the seats ahead of you and although this isn’t a critical issue, if you or the person seated next to you want to use the under-seat area to store a bag of any size, you may find the space for your feet is slightly restricted.

Last but not least it’s worth mentioning that the seats in the 777-200’s Premium Economy cabin all have air nozzles above them so passengers have some degree of control over how hot or cold their seat areas are.

a close up of a seat and lights

This can be especially useful on night flights where some crews have a habit of overheating the cabin.

Premium Economy Seat Verdict

The seat is comfortable to sit in, the recline is good but not great and, overall, the seat is not a bad place to spend a daytime transatlantic flight. The seats in the first row of the cabin are ones to avoid if you’re tall and like to stretch out your legs, and with the limited amount of storage space around them they’re also not ideal for anyone traveling with a lot of personal items they want to keep close to hand.

I spent well over 11 hours in this seat (from boarding to disembarking) and it served its purpose for me. I felt fine at the end of my journey, I didn’t feel penned in or like I was lacking space and there was adequate space between the seats to ensure that my neighbor and I didn’t feel like we were being pushed together.

There’s nothing special about this seat but it’s a considerably better place to pass a flight than the Economy Class seats just a few rows away.

American Airlines Premium Economy IFE

In the first row of the Premium Economy cabin, the IFE screens are housed under the armrests but in all the other rows the screens are built into the seat ahead.

a screen on a device

The screens are a good size and can be tilted to a significant degree so passengers can adjust their viewing angle when the person ahead chooses to recline their seat.

a screen with a plane and a plane icons

There’s a remote control housed in the center armrest that can be used to navigate the entertainment menus…

a seat with buttons and lights

…but the touchscreen functionality works well enough that the remote control isn’t generally required.

The entertainment selection that American Airlines offers onboard its long-haul flights is generally pretty good and it’s the same regardless of which cabin you’re sitting in. There’s a good selection of recent movie releases, TV shows (although there are only a few episodes of each show so don’t expect too many box sets)…

a screen shot of a computer

…a varied selection of music…

a screen shot of a television

….and a few games that can be played using the remote control.

a screen shot of a video game

There are also 4 channels of “Live TV” on offer……

a screen shot of a television

….but I have yet to get these to work on any of the transatlantic flights on which I’ve attempted to watch them.

a screen shot of a television

Premium Economy IFE Verdict

The “live TV” is a feature I have yet to be able to try out so all I can say about it is that no one should be banking on being able to use it (let me know in the comments if you’ve had better luck than me). The entertainment selection is good, although the low number of episodes of each TV show was a little disappointing.

Overall the IFE was fine…but then I say that as someone who always brings more than enough of his own entertainment with him so my needs from the onboard system are relatively limited.

American Airlines Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi on American Airlines international flights costs between $12 and $19 depending on how long you’d like to have wi-fi access but the service can be very patchy.

a screenshot of a flight ticket

I don’t think I’ve even taken a transatlantic flight on American where I found the wi-fi service to be good throughout – it has varied between being acceptable (slow-ish but only a few dropped connections) to outright abysmal where it made any attempt to get some work done, futile. On this trip, the level of service fell somewhere in the middle.

American Airlines Premium Economy Amenities

Premium Economy passengers generally find all the amenities the airline offers waiting for them at their seat when they board.

a seat with a pillow inside

The package on the seat contains a “sleep set” which includes a good-size pillow…

a pillow on a bed

…and a blanket both made by Casper.

a close up of a fabric

There’s also an amenity kit containing socks, an eye mask, earplugs, a toothbrush & toothpaste, and skincare products by Baxters.

a black bag with a white map and a black towel

Right now, this is what the American Airlines Premium Ex

The amenities are rounded off by a pair of headphones which, although they look fine,…

a black headphones in a plastic wrap

…provide truly terrible sound quality. As I’ve said before: Just as you should never rely on an airline to keep you entertained in the sky (bring your own movies, TV shows, and music pre-loaded on your devices) you should also never rely on an airline to supply you with good quality headphones. Bring your own!

Premium Economy Amenities Verdict

For a Premium Economy cabin, the amenities are fine. You get an amenity kit with the more important items in it and the blanket and pillow were more than acceptable. The one noticeable negative was the quality of the headphones which were truly terrible and have no place in any cabin with the word “premium” in its name.

Overall it’s hard to find too much wrong with what’s on offer for a daytime flight.

American Airlines Premium Economy Food, Drinks & Service

Menus and water bottles were handed out by the flight attendants shortly before the aircraft pushed back.

a menu of a restaurant

The crew handed out bags of mini pretzels 25 minutes after takeoff…

a small orange and white package

…and 10 minutes later, a drinks cart was brought through the cabin offering all the drinks on the menu.

An hour after takeoff, lunch was served and the flight attendant working my side of the aircraft correctly noted that I had pre-ordered my meal a few days beforehand. The meals in Premium Economy are served on a single tray, but the presentation and the tableware is a noticeable step up from what is used in Economy Class – all the food items are served on china and the cutlery is made from metal.

a tray of food on a plane

The starter consisted of “seasonal greens” with sundried tomatoes and parmesan cheese…

a plate of salad and beans

..and a small bottle of olive oil mixed with balsamic vinegarette was provided on the side.

The salad was very dry so the olive oil and balsamic were needed to male it a little more palatable…but the olive oil had solidified in the bottle so I was left with just the balsamic vinegar. That wasn’t the best of starts to a meal.

For my main course, I had ordered the grilled chicken breast with cream sauce, lentils, and green beans.

a plate of food on a table

The chicken was nice, well cooked and not at all dry. The lentils were pretty good too (they tasted a lot better than they look in the images) but the beans were rubbery and a noticeable weak spot of the course.

I didn’t try the crackers, bread, or the cream cheese that came served on the tray…

a tray of food on a plane

…but I can report that the chocolate caramel truffle that was served for dessert tasted a lot nicer than it looked.

a rectangular white plate with a brown dessert on it

The flight attendants served drinks at the start of the meal and came through the cabin part-way through the meal to see if any of the passengers needed a top-up and, once again, all drinks on the menu were available for selection.

The most pleasing aspect of the meal service was the efficient and pleasant way in which it was carried out. All the flight attendants were smiley and personable throughout and my tray was cleared away within 10 minutes of having finished my meal. That was good work by the crew.

A few minutes after the trays were cleared away, the flight attendants came through the cabin with coffee and tea which, as usual, were offered in paper cups. Paper cups are not particularly “premium” and they’re not very good for the environment so I really wish American would take steps to cater these flights with china cups for the Premium Economy cabin.

a cup and two small cups of cream

20 minutes after the hot drinks were served, the cabin lights were dimmed and passengers were left to rest, work or enjoy whatever entertainment they had available.

Almost exactly 3 hours later, the flight attendants reappeared in the cabin serving small tubs of vanilla ice cream (there was no other flavor alternative) and offering passengers drinks from the bar or their choice of tea or coffee.

a container of ice cream

Another 4 hours passed (during this time the flight attendants came through the cabin a few times to clear away any trash and to check that none of the passengers wanted anything) and, a little over an hour before we landed, the cabin lights were raised and a light meal was served.

a plate of food on a tray

The main part of the light meal was a pomegranate and feta salad with chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, arugula, pitta chips, white beans, chopped walnuts, and something called “sumac garnish” (I had no idea what this was until I googled it ).

a plate of salad and fruit

If I could, I’d ban the use of arugula worldwide as I find it to be a truly hateful “green” so finding it in my salad wasn’t ideal. The pitta chips were soggy and, once again, the olive oil had solidified in its container. Other than that, the salad was ok 🙂

Alongside the main salad was a melon plate which tasted crisp and fresh…

a plate of fruit and a box of juice

…and the “Pots” 70% ganache (which I’m pretty sure British Airways once served in Economy Class) was pretty good too.

a small box with a label on it

I finished the light meat was over approximately 50 minutes before we landed and the flight attendants were, again, great at clearing up the remnants in an incredibly efficient fashion.

Premium Economy Food, Drinks & Service Verdict

The flight attendants were great. I’m often saying that the level of service you’ll get on American Airlines is very hit and miss (that’s still true) but on this occasion it was a definite “hit”.

All the crew I saw and interacted with were pleasant, amiable, polite, and efficient and it’s hard to ask much more of them. They seemed genuinely interested in providing a good level of service and there wasn’t even a hint of the kind of “attitude” that has sadly become more prevalent in recent years.

Overall, the food was fine if nothing special. The presentation and quality were noticeably better than what you can expect to get in Economy Class…but that isn’t a particularly high bar to clear. Amerian Airlines should definitely work on removing paper cups from its Premium Economy offering (there’s nothing premium about a paper cup) but the tableware used for the rest of the meal was actually pretty nice.

Bottom Line

There’s nothing great, amazing, or fantastic about the American Airlines Premium Economy product but it’s definitely a noticeable improvement (in all areas) on what you’ll find in Economy Class. The seats are better padded, there’s more personal space, the service levels are better and you should arrive at your destination in considerably better shape than you would if you had to endure the same flight in a packed Economy Class cabin.

As long as you appreciate that Premium Economy isn’t a small step down from Business Class but, instead, is a reasonable step up from Economy Class, you won’t be disappointed.

Review: American Airlines 777-200 Premium Economy

a plane parked at an airport

I didn’t fly in premium economy class, but I did fly in a premium economy seat. For reasons I cannot explain nor understand, American Airlines does not market its premium economy cabin as a separate class of service on domestic flights.

If you do not have elite status, you can still purchase these seats while ticketing your reservation or anytime after. Prices vary, but typically run $59-99 on a transcontinental flight.

Now there is a drawback, of course, to not making premium economy a separate cabin. Namely, service is no different than what you will experience in economy class. While United offers business class meals to its premium economy passengers on domestic flights, American Airlines will not…as you’ll see below.

But the seat is nice…significantly more comfortable and spacious than an economy class seat.

American Airlines 1235 Miami (MIA) – Los Angeles (LAX) Monday, March 22 Depart: 04:25PM Arrive: 07:10PM Duration: 05hr, 45min Aircraft:  Boeing 777-200 Seat: 15L (Premium Economy)

Boarding began at 3:30pm, nearly an hour before scheduled departure.

American Airlines 777-200 Premium Economy Seat

The premium economy cabin on American Airlines features 24 seats spaced out in a 2-4-2 configuration over three rows. Front row seats have attached leg rests while the second and third rows have flip down leg rests from the seat in front. Legroom is 38 inches while the seat is 19 inches wide, two inches more than economy class. That may not sound like much, but it makes quite a difference on a transcontinental flight.

a row of seats in an airplane

Note that there is space for the seats to recline in the last row, where I was seated.

seats in an airplane with windows

Every seat was filled on this flight and I appreciated having only one passenger next to me instead of two. I ended up napping for half the flight. The extra legroom really makes a difference.

Seat control is via push button control and there is also a “passenger service unit” to control the IFE. The tray table flips out from the armrest.

American Airlines 777 Premium Economy Cleaning

I noticed a cookie wrapper in my seatback pocket when setting into my seat:

a seat belt with a strap attached to the seat

It seems that AA’s cleaning team either does not clean seatback pockets or missed something very obvious.

American Airlines Premium Economy IFE

I appreciated the large (12 inch) touchscreen, which was extremely responsive and featured an extensive library of movies, TV shows, games, music, and American Airlines-related programming.

a screen on a seat

Do note the complimentary headphones offered to guests are of very poor quality. Not only must the sound be turned way up in order to hear, but the earphones themselves become quite uncomfortable after a relatively short period.

a pair of black and red earbuds

Bring your own headphones, but you don’t have to bring your own IFE…the selection is great.

American Airlines Premium Economy Food + Drinks

As I mentioned, the premium economy cabin on this flight was considered no different than economy class. As a result, we received only a package of biscoff cookies and one beverage for the entire six hours flight…no refills, even of water, were offered.

a can of soda and a plastic cup on a table

On international flights, expect an enhanced meal served on ceramic and metal tableware – it actually resembles what AA is currently serving on transcontinental flights in business class . Alcohol is also free on international flights in which premium economy is offered as a separate cabin of service.

a plate of food on a table

American Airlines 777-200 Premium Economy Lavatory

The premium economy cabin does not have its own lavatories and passengers are instructed to use the economy class lavatories rather than business class ones (the curtain was closed and snapped shut between business and premium economy).

I did use the lavatory toward the end of the flight and found it fairly clean.

a toilet and sink in a bathroom

The views were beautiful coming into Los Angeles and we arrived more than an hour early thanks to a short wait to takeoff and plenty of schedule padding.

an wing of an airplane

My assessment of American Airlines premium economy class is the same as that of Premium Plus , the premium economy class of United: it’s a really nice, domestic first class style seat for daytime flights, but is not ideal for overnight flight. Ironically, I did spend half the flight sleeping, but I am not sure I would have slept and better or worse in a standard economy class seat.

To American and Alaska elites: enjoy the free seat assignments while they last. I cannot imagine that American Airlines will not charge to sit in these seats indefinitely. But for now, it sure beats economy class:

Post-script: with only a biscoff cookie served onboard, I treated myself to In-N-Out after landing at LAX.

Thanks, the timing of this review was great I’m about to book a trip on this exact same plane and was thinking about paying the $52 for the “MCE” seat for some extra space.

All though, the best part of the review was the last picture of that inn and out burger, that looks delicious. ….oh boy I’m gonna get roasted in the comments now

' src=

I would never pay to sit in premium economy. I’ll either fly coach (which is where I almost always do fly) or I’ll pay for a lie flat seat. Paying for “premium economy” seems to be entirely in the airline’s favour. But as Matthew wrote, on domestic flights, there is no extra cost is you have certain status on AA. I flew from MIA to PHL last November on an AA 787 Dreamliner, and my lifetime Platinum let me sit in the Economy Plus seat. It was fine. The leg rest attached to the seat in front of mine didn’t work, so that wasn’t a benefit. But the wider seat, the extra leg room, and the IFE was a nice free benefit. I agree with Al Baker of Qatar – who has recently been interviewed – that Premium Economy is a joke. But when it’s free, who doesn’t enjoy a couple of extra inches of seat width and leg room.

How was it when the (a) passenger in front of a PE seat fully reclines ? Able to eat or use laptop when seat in front fully reclined>

' src=

I was still able to eat and use laptop. Not ideal, but much better than Y class.

' src=

I definitely recommend a “whole” grilled onion at In-N-Out over the grilled onions. You actually get a little onion taste instead of a pile of mushy onions.

' src=

AA does sell PE on long haul Hawaii and Alaska routes. However, they only provide economy service from reviews I have read.

Another reason to stick with UA, as they not only offer more PE, but they actually provide a PE service

' src=

All you needed was a red beret to go with that shirt.

What am I missing?

' src=

Hey Matt!!! You’re always styling when flying! Keep it up, you should see what I look like when I go flying. You look GREAT.

' src=

They think you’re looking like a Parisian

' src=

We had the misfortune to fly AA Premium Economy instead of our booked BA PE flight last March at the start of the pandemic from DFW to LHR. It does not compare to The BA experience, we hated it and will never knowingly fly AA again. The main issue for us is that it was not a separate cabin, we had constant traffic from economy heading for the toilets, and most probably caught COVID-19 from that experience.

' src=

It is probably not marketed for domestic flights because they don’t have the correct fare class structure to support it. The “letters” of the alphabet are probably already used up on normal economy fares, and no premium economy fares itself are filed and catered for in the systems. It would be a big undertaking to make this happen and likely not worth it for the “odd” route.

@Julian PE is marketed for HI and Alaska Flights. They just choose not to offer it on transcon flights

Iconic French fashion designer, Jean Paul Gaultier, is known for striped shirts similar to the one you’re wearing in the lavatory picture!

Ah, got it.

' src=

I dont like the scrolling system on the seatback entertainment on AA. Find it hard to control. I have to change to list format.

Great review thanks!

If you are plat is it free to book for whole family? Such a great benefit of AA status.

' src=

My experience has been that these PE seats are actually as comfortable as the First Class domestic seats. Are they the same?

777 200ER American Airlines Seat Map

American airlines 777 200er overview.

Boeing AA 777-200ER (Extended Range) long-haul, twin-engine passenger jets are part of American Airlines’ fleet. Various features are included in these aircraft to ensure passengers have an enjoyable and comfortable flight.

The Boeing 777-200ER American Airlines seat map has First Class, Business Class, Premium Economy, and Main Cabin options for travelers. First Class passengers have access to American Airlines’ exclusive Flagship Lounge and a fully reclined seat. Personal entertainment screens, lie-flat seats with direct aisle access, and premium dining options are all available in Business Class.

Boeing 777-200ER American

Premium Economy provides additional legroom and wider seats. American Airlines economy class is Main Cabin, which has standard seating and onboard entertainment. The aircraft’s large cabin has plenty of overhead storage, comfortable seating, and wide aisles.

The AA 777 200ER provides passengers with a wide range of entertainment options. A sizable personal screen in each seat back of the in-flight entertainment system shows various movies, television shows, music, games, and other interactive content. Passengers can access the in-flight entertainment portal and stream content directly to their devices, such as smartphones or tablets.

The American 777 200ER high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity makes it possible for travelers to remain connected and entertained throughout the flight. The American Airlines app and in-flight shopping are also accessible via Wi-Fi, where passengers can view flight information and purchase additional services.

Boeing 777 200ER American Airlines: Best Seats

Aa 777 200er business class.

The Boeing 777-200ER American Airlines First Class cabin is built to meet the needs of discerning travelers and provide an exceptional level of comfort and luxury.

With two seats on one side of the aisle and one seat on the other, the seating arrangement is in a 1-2-1 configuration, which means that they are in a single row. The aircraft’s single seats are on the side with the windows, while the double seats are in the middle, giving passengers a great view of the cabin.

There are two sections of the cabin, each with six rows of seats, and the first section has eight rows of seats. The American Airlines 777-200ER First Class has 37 seats in Business Class altogether.

The aisle seats in rows 1 and 2 in the AA 777-200ER Business Class section are the best. Passengers can get in and out of these seats because they have direct access to the aisle. Additionally, these seats offer improved views of the outside and additional privacy, making them a popular choice for passengers.

oeing 777-200ER American Airlines First Class

Premium Economy

The Premium Economy seat plan on the AA Boeing 777-200ER is designed to make traveling for passengers easy and comfortable. The rows of Premium Economy seats range from 11 to 15. The seats are numbered from A to L, with A and L being the window seats, E and G being the middle seats, and C, D and H, J being the aisle seats. There are 24 Premium Economy seats available in the 2-4-2 configuration.

Based on the seating map, the 13A in the front row has more legroom and is next to the bulkhead wall. However, because it lacks an overhead bin, passengers need to store their carry-on luggage in the overhead bin in the cabin’s front. Seat 13C is in the aisle, while seat 13E is in the middle. While seat 13J is an aisle seat, seat 13G is also a middle seat.

The 777-200ER American Airlines aisle seats in rows 13 and 14 of the emergency exit are the best in the Economy class section. Travelers can stretch their legs during the flight thanks to the additional legroom provided by these seats. Additionally, these seats are close to the emergency exits, making it easier to get out of the building in an emergency.

Main Cabin Extra

The Main Cabin Extra seats on the Boeing 777-200ER American are arranged in a 3-4-3 arrangement, with 3 seats on each side of the aisle. On the seating chart, the pitch of each seat is 38 inches, which is six inches more than the pitch of the standard seats in the Main Cabin. The passenger experience is enhanced, and seating is more comfortable thanks to this additional space.

A and L are the window seats, while C and J are the aisle seat and the seats are numbered from A to L. After all, they are in the center of the AA 777-200ER, and the seats in the middle rows (E and G) are ideal for traveling as a couple because it is simpler to converse with one another.

The bulkhead, the wall that separates the Main Cabin Extra section from the Main Cabin, is where you’ll find the best seats if you’re flying in Main Cabin Extra. Because you can’t recline into the seat in front of you, these seats have more room for your legs. The window seats in rows 10 or 14 are another great option because they give you a great view of the scenery and a little more space.

The Main Cabin of the Boeing 777 200ER American Airlines is made to be comfortable and convenient for passengers. The seating arrangements in the Main Cabin are 3-4-3. It indicates that there are two seats on one side of the aisle, four in the center, and two on the opposite side.

The American Airlines Boeing 777-200ER seats in the Main Cabin are numbered from A to H, with the A and F seats being close to the windows and the B and E seats being close to the aisle. The aisle is seen from the C and D seats, which are in the middle of the cabin.

According to the seat map, the aisle seats in rows 21 and 23 are a good choice if you want a seat with more space because they give you more room to stretch your legs. Because you’ll have more room on the armrests, window seats in the same rows are also a good option for traveling with a companion.

General presentation.

There are 16 Boeing 767-200s in the American Airlines fleet of 683 planes. These planes cruise at a speed of 555mph at an altitude of 37000ft and have a total seating capacity of between 223 and 245 passengers in a three class configuration used on Atlantic or Pacific flights. This layout is the Atlantic version and has a 16/35/194 configuration for 245 passengers. Under-seat space at all A, D, F and J seats is limited due to the entertainment system box. There are up to 14 channels of audio programming on this plane for all classes. First Class customers receive Bose® QuietComfort® 2 Acoustic Noise Cancelling® Headphones. On international flights, Business class passengers get them as well. In Economy, if you don’t have your own, you would have to buy headphones for 2$ a piece. This plane has personal video monitors with 10-channel programming in all classes. In First Class, you can also enjoy a Personal Video player with up to 20 additional movie selections. In Economy, if you don’t have your own, you would have to buy headphones for 2$ a piece. There are LCD monitors on the ceiling as well as large projectors throughout the cabin with regular TV. Check the seat map! Your seat may be equipped with a DC power outlet. AA uses a cigarette lighter style outlet delivering 15 volts of current. Usually, a power outlet is available on every seat in First and Business class, as well as selected rows in the Economy cabin. Look for the “lightning bolt” symbol on the overhead bin rows containing powerport-equipped seats. Worldwide satellite communications are available on American Airlines’ Boeing 777 and Boeing 767 aircraft almost anytime while flying over North America and worldwide. Rates for satellite calls are $5.00 to connect and $10.00 per minute. Billing begins when a call is answered.

Worth the Extra Money: American Airlines (777-200) in Premium Economy From London to Miami

JT Genter

In October 2016, American Airlines become the first major US-based airline to offer true premium-economy seating. After taking delivery of more aircraft, AA launched premium economy in May 2017.

Since then, Delta (in October 2017) and United (in June 2018) also introduced true premium economy, as US airlines began to realize that flyers desire something between the cramped conditions in economy and the pricey lie-flat options up front. And AA is at the forefront, with over 2,000 premium-economy seats installed on 85 aircraft by the end of May.

But there's a question that dogs all products in premium economy: Is it worth paying more than economy? We're asking this question of airlines crossing the Atlantic, with reviews for Aeroflot , Air France , British Airways , Iberia , Lufthansa , LOT and Virgin Atlantic already published. Now it's time to judge American Airlines.

I found myself in Amsterdam looking for a return flight to the US. One-way international flights are rarely a decent price, and this was no different. A last-minute booking from Amsterdam to the US in American Airlines premium economy was over $6,000 one-way. But I was able to piece together an open-jaw itinerary from Amsterdam to Houston (AMS-LHR-MIA-IAH) with the return in British Airways premium economy from Montreal to Amsterdam (YUL-LHR-AMS) when I needed to return to Europe for $1,358 round-trip.

While partner premium-economy flights are a great way to earn bonus award miles and extra Elite Qualifying Dollars , the American Airlines-marketed flights were much cheaper than codeshares on partners British Airways, Finnair and Iberia. As it was booked with AA flight numbers, this ticket earned miles based on the price before taxes and fees.

american airlines 777 200 seat map with premium economy

One thing to keep in mind when calculating earnings for these tickets is that only the legs you fly in premium economy are going to code as premium economy. While economy legs on British Airways-booked premium-economy tickets have posted with discount economy-fare codes, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the economy legs on this ticket credited as full-fare "Y" economy. This difference meant I ended up with 982 more Elite Qualifying Miles than I expected from these three legs (2,946 instead of 1,964).

I arrived in London Heathrow's Terminal 5 on my British Airways flight from Amsterdam. American Airlines, like most other Oneworld carriers, operates out of Terminal 3. Before you can take the bus to the new terminal, you have to pass through the US security checks on the ground floor of Terminal 5. While it seemed like other passengers were getting a full interrogation, my interview merely consisted of the agent reviewing my passport, boarding pass and his tablet screen — without a single question. I was able to catch the next standing-room-only bus to Terminal 3.

american airlines 777 200 seat map with premium economy

An AA premium-economy ticket doesn't grant access to a lounge on its own, but Oneworld Sapphire (AAdvantage Platinum and Platinum Pro) and Oneworld Emerald (AAdvantage Executive Platinum) elites have a couple of incredible choices in Heathrow's Terminal 3. I started at the new Qantas lounge, which just opened last November and was open to Oneworld Sapphire and Emerald elites. Considering its table-service meals, excellent buffet and top-notch bar, I'd have been happy to spend all day there.

Still, I figured I'd check out the Cathay Pacific lounge next door. My Oneworld Emerald status granted me access to the first-class section of the lounge, which included nice runway and gate views, table-service meals and a stunning look that reminded me of the Cathay Pacific The Pier lounge in Hong Kong (HKG) . That said, it was a smaller lounge space and didn't have all of the amenities that you'd find in an HKG Cathay Pacific lounge.

As is typical for Heathrow, my gate wasn't revealed on the departures board until shortly before boarding. At the gate was a desk where staff checked my boarding pass and passport. Then, before I could enter the waiting area, a security agent checked my name against a list of those selected for additional screening.

american airlines 777 200 seat map with premium economy

We were stuck in this boarding area for a while with no news about how long the delay would last. For those who needed a bite to eat, the area was stocked with three vending machines (snacks, sodas and Ben & Jerry's ice cream). As far as entertainment goes, there was a large flat-screen TV and a newsstand.

american airlines 777 200 seat map with premium economy

Once my boarding pass was scanned to let me into the waiting area, I was marked as boarded in the AA system, so there were no other boarding pass or passport checks. When boarding started about an hour after the stated time, gate agents called out group numbers but didn't check boarding passes. Passengers quickly caught on, and this led to a rather chaotic boarding process. The upside to this was that we were able to board quickly and depart just 20 minutes late.

Cabin and Seat

My flight was on a 777-200ER (registration N792AN) that was originally delivered to American Airlines in July 2000. Inside, the plane didn't show its age at all, having been through multiple retrofits recently. This particular aircraft was one of the last 777s flying with angle-flat business-class seats before it was retrofitted with B/E Aerospace Super Diamond business-class seats in Hong Kong in June 2017. Then it went back under the knife in October 2017 for the installation of premium-economy seats.

The premium-economy cabin was in a 2-4-2 arrangement with 19-inch-wide seats. This was a noticeable step up from the economy cabin, which had 17-inch-wide seats in a 10-across (3-4-3) arrangement. The four seats in the middle would feel crowded if the cabin were full, but it would be a great arrangement for a family or if you lucked into having an empty seat in your row.

american airlines 777 200 seat map with premium economy

The seat pairs at the windows were perfect for traveling couples.

american airlines 777 200 seat map with premium economy

The seats measured 37.5 inches from seatback to seatback. This wasn't spacious, especially if the person in front of you reclined, but it was more than a half foot more than the pitch offered in economy.

american airlines 777 200 seat map with premium economy

Seat storage consisted of a well under the armrest between seats, a pocket for magazines or newspapers and a 10-inch-wide elastic pocket in the seat to the front. While bulkhead seats had legrests that expanded from below the seat, other seats only had extendable footrests.

american airlines 777 200 seat map with premium economy

In the middle section, the under-seat storage area was broken up by the leg supports into a bunch of small sections only large enough for a small bag. The window seats didn't suffer from the same under-seat storage issues.

american airlines 777 200 seat map with premium economy

One downside of this cabin: The galley just in front of the cabin was dedicated to business class. This meant that premium-economy passengers had to duck through the curtain and pass through the forward economy cabin to use the bathrooms in the middle of economy. They were clean but nothing special.

american airlines 777 200 seat map with premium economy

At each seat at boarding were an amenity kit, headphones and a Casper-branded pillow and blanket , all bundled in plastic.

american airlines 777 200 seat map with premium economy

Inside the amenity kit, American Airlines provided a nice cloth eye mask, soft socks, mediocre foam earplugs, a toothbrush and toothpaste.

american airlines 777 200 seat map with premium economy

As far as I could tell, the over-the-ear American-branded headphones didn't provide any active noise-canceling. The sound was good, but they certainly weren't the Bose headphones you would've gotten in business class. They were, however, a huge step up from the earbuds in economy.

american airlines 777 200 seat map with premium economy

The seat's headphone plug was three-prong, while the provided headphones were one-prong. At first I thought this might be an issue, but both the provided headphones and my personal headphones worked well without an adapter.

While American Airlines flight attendants are infamous for collecting business-class headphones well before landing, the cabin crew on this flight didn't bother.

american airlines 777 200 seat map with premium economy

The IFE screen was crisp and measured 10.5 inches diagonally. It could be tilted so that you could see the screen even when the passenger in front of you was reclined. And AA seems to have realized that entertained passengers are less needy, so its IFE system was well-stocked with plenty of entertainment options.

There was a universal power outlet in the storage well underneath the armrest. Unfortunately, these power outlets suffered from the same issue I've pointed out in previous reviews of this seat : Since it was recessed into the seat, it made plugging in angled power plugs impossible. There was also a USB port, though.

american airlines 777 200 seat map with premium economy

The internet service on this flight was powered by Panasonic . Wi-Fi options were $12 for two hours, $17 for four hours or $19 for the whole flight.

american airlines 777 200 seat map with premium economy

The Wi-Fi speeds were generally awful. The Ookla speed test failed to initiate either on my laptop browser or my phone app. Using Google's speed test, the connection tested as fast as a paltry 2.38 Mbps for downloads at one point of the flight.

american airlines 777 200 seat map with premium economy

But in practice the speeds were much slower, if the internet worked at all. I often received connection errors as I tried to work. I never was able to connect my laptop to the Slack server the entire flight, although I was able to connect via my phone. The low internet speed was especially concerning considering the flight was well less than half empty.

The one area where I was especially pleased with American Airlines' premium-economy soft product was its meal service. It was a small touch, but premium-economy passengers got their own menus.

To pay tribute to our departure airport, I ordered a gin and tonic during the first drink service. It was served in its component parts: a cup of ice, a can of tonic and a miniature bottle of Bombay Sapphire gin. But the flight attendant did ask whether I wanted slices of lime. (I did.)

For lunch, I chose the chicken breast. The four-course meal was served all at once, but was tastefully presented with white tablecloth, metal silverware and real plates: hummus, crudites, stuffed pepper and a pita; seasonal greens with balsamic vinaigrette; grilled chicken breast in cream sauce with lentils and green beans; and cherry crumble.

Since there wasn't a dedicated galley for the premium-economy cabin, passengers had to pass through the entire economy section to reach the galley in the far rear to get a drink or snack ( since you aren't supposed to use the call button for that ). There the crew had set up a decent selection of snacks as well as leftover bread and desserts from the economy lunch. Self-serve drinks included water and juice, but this crew was happy to oblige other requests.

The "almost there" meal service before landing consisted of a burrito bowl with rice, diced vegetables, pico de gallo, guacamole and sour cream with fresh fruit on the side. While it wasn't much to look at, I found the meal to be fresh and delicious, especially paired with a Dos Equis beer.

I've flown enough AA flights — especially internationally — to know to come into a flight with low expectations with regards to service. I was pleasantly surprised by the friendliness of this crew, though. This crew was friendly and attentive both in the cabin during standard service and when I approached them in the galleys.

During the first drink service, I mentioned that my tray table was quite unstable, and the flight attendant said he'd write it up. When I approached the crew in the galley midflight to request a cup of coffee, the same flight attendant had a moment of horror as he remembered that he'd forgotten to record my issue. So he did it right there. Using iSolve on his tablet , he selected my seat and noted the broken tray table. We anxiously awaited the award that the system would provide ... and we were a bit disappointed when an Executive Platinum elite received only 2,000 miles for a broken tray table on a transatlantic flight. That said, the crew's genuine apology for the minor issue was more than sufficient.

Overall Impression

When AA messes up, we say so. And when it does things right, we say so as well. So, credit where credit is due: based on my experience, American Airlines premium economy deserves praise. Currently priced at just a couple hundred dollars more than economy each way, AA premium economy provides a solid Goldilocks level between AA's quite-tight economy seats and its (generally) great, and expensive, hard product in business class.

My seat only had moderate recline and the legroom could have been more generous, but the greatly improved catering, amenity kit, high-quality headphones and extra space certainly justified the price premium over AA economy for those who could afford the step up.

I didn't really have issues with the seat itself, but rather with the airline: late departure with poor communication, and Panasonic Wi-Fi connectivity issues.

After weighing the reasonable price difference between economy and premium economy plus the 1.5x earning rate for Elite Qualifying Miles, I've decided this definitely won't be the last time that I book AA's premium-economy product.

American Airlines premium economy seats

American airlines premium economy menu, amenities and other perks, if you're considering booking american airlines premium economy ….

In May 2017, American Airlines became the first major U.S. airline to introduce a true premium economy product. American didn't waffle on implementing this new product offering, installing premium economy on over 100 aircraft by the end of 2018. Now, you'll find American Airlines premium economy seating installed on all of the airline’s Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft for international flights.

If you're new to premium economy on American, you may wonder how premium economy differs from standard economy. Let's take a look at the airline's premium economy seats, meals and amenities, plus some frequently asked questions about how American Airlines premium economy works.

One of the primary benefits of booking American Airlines premium economy is getting a bigger and wider seat than you would in economy. For its premium economy product, American installed Collins Aerospace MiQ seats that are a bit wider (around 18.5-19 inches) than its economy seats (around 16-18 inches).

Premium seats also have around 38 inches of pitch compared to around 31-32 inches in economy. This allows for more legroom and a deeper recline.

If this seat looks familiar, it's because American Airlines also uses this same seat type for domestic first class seating on its retrofitted domestic fleet.

American Airlines premium economy seats are better than these domestic first class seats in a couple of ways. The main advantage: Premium economy seats have an in-flight entertainment screen and remote — rather than just a tablet holder in domestic first class. Also, all premium economy seats have either a footrest or a leg rest.

american airlines 777 200 seat map with premium economy

Depending on the aircraft type, American installed between 21 and 28 premium economy seats across three to four rows. On Boeing 777 aircraft, American Airlines installed eight seats per row — two on each side along the window and four in the middle. Meanwhile, American's 787 aircraft have seven seats per row arranged 2-3-2. Either way, couples will want to snag seats together in the windows while families likely will prefer the middle seats.

American Airlines premium economy includes "chef-inspired dining" and complimentary beer, wine and spirits. On long-haul international flights, American will serve multi-course meals with real metal silverware on top of white tablecloths. Add in its solid drink menu and an American Airlines premium economy ticket can rival what you get in business class on some airlines.

Unfortunately, not all routes with premium economy service get this nice of a meal. Because American determines meal type by region and distance, some premium economy passengers simply get the same meal and drink service as economy.

For example, the premium economy meal on a recent flight from Dallas to Bogota didn't seem particularly "chef-inspired."

In addition to bigger seats, American Airlines premium economy passengers get a Casper sleep set, an amenity kit and headphones on select international flights.

Premium economy sleep set

American Airlines provides a Casper sleep set for premium economy passengers. This sleep set isn't as comprehensive as what you'll find in business and first class; however, the lumbar pillow and "day blanket" are nice touches that you won't get in economy.

Premium economy amenity kit

Since May 2021, American Airlines has partnered with Shinola and D.S. & Durga to produce its amenity kits. In premium economy, the amenity kit includes items like socks, an eye mask, hand and body lotion, a dental kit, earplugs and a pen.

american airlines 777 200 seat map with premium economy

Again, not every American Airlines premium economy route gets an amenity kit. American notes that amenity kits are only available on international flights — meaning premium economy routes to Hawaii and Alaska wouldn't get an amenity kit. In addition, American Airlines premium economy passengers on certain short-haul international routes don't receive an amenity kit.

Other perks of American Airlines premium economy

Headphones: American Airlines premium economy passengers get "noise-reducing headphones." This perk is limited to eligible routes.

Priority check-in and boarding: American Airlines premium economy passengers can use the Priority check-in line and board during Group 4 priority boarding .

Over the past few years, many airlines — including American Airlines — have narrowed seats in economy while installing true premium economy seats. By offering premium economy, American, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines all now offer a way to fly that's better than economy but not nearly as expensive as business class.

Be aware that not all perks are included in every American Airlines premium economy ticket, and the availability is highly dependent on the flight route itself. It's not uncommon to be served economy meals and few amenities on flights to Hawaii, Alaska and even some international routes, limiting the value of an American Airlines premium economy experience to a more spacious seat.

You'll need to fly on eligible long-haul international routes to get the full premium dining experience and in-flight amenities.

American Airlines has premium economy installed on its entire fleet of Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft — including the 777-200ER, 777-300ER, 787-8 Dreamliner and 787-9 Dreamliner. That means that the majority of American's international aircraft fleet offers premium economy seats.

When operating domestic and short-haul international routes, American often sells premium economy seats as part of the main cabin instead of as a true premium economy product. Just look for a small cabin of seats with fewer seats per row.

No, American Airlines doesn't allow mileage upgrades into premium economy. Since its first introduction, American has teased that upgrades will be added "at a later date" but still hasn't added them.

American Airlines AAdvantage elites will get complimentary upgrades from main cabin or premium economy to the next fare class on eligible flights within North America. AAdvantage elites may also be eligible to receive day-of-departure upgrades from economy to premium economy on routes to/from Hawaii and Alaska and the contiguous U.S.

American Airlines premium economy seats are virtually identical between aircraft. The only difference is the number of seats per row due to some aircraft being narrower than others. American Airlines Boeing 777 aircraft are arranged with eight seats per row (2-4-2) while Boeing 787 aircraft have just seven seats per row (2-3-2).

Not necessarily. American Airlines premium economy fares used to earn an Elite Qualifying Miles bonus, which would help you get to elite status faster. But, starting in 2022, American Airlines revamped the way you earn elite status . Now, the only metric that matters is Loyalty Points.

Loyalty Points earnings from flights are based on how many AAdvantage miles you earn — and how many miles you earn depends on how much you spend on those flights. That means you'll earn the same number of AAdvantage miles whether you pay $800 for an economy ticket or $800 for a premium economy ticket. The only way you earn more miles through a premium economy ticket is by spending more.

How To Choose the Best Economy Seat on American Airlines

No one likes to fly in the back of the plane, but sometimes it’s unavoidable.

And when you do fly in economy class, it’s important to understand that not every seat is created equal. There are indeed differences among the seats in the cabin.

Today, we’ll take a look at American Airlines, which operates a very large domestic and international fleet. We’ll break down each of the economy seat options and tell you how to book them so that you’re prepared going into your next AA flight.

For the most part, American’s economy seats have the same physical attributes, so there’s no reason to necessarily book one aircraft over another in hopes of encountering a better product. Simply put, an economy seat is an economy seat when it comes to comfort.

That said, we can group the economy seats offered into different categories, each with pros and cons:

  • Regional aircraft (such as an Embraer ERJ-145) tend to have cramped seat configurations , but also have a favorable 2-2 configuration where everyone has a window or aisle seat.
  • On domestic aircraft (such as a Boeing 737-800), you’ll find economy class seats laid out in a 3-3 configuration , where seats in the bulkhead and exit rows are the best picks . Unfortunately, almost a third of the plane is stuck in a middle seat.
  • American’s international planes (such as a Boeing 777-300ER) are laid out in a 3-4-3 configuration in economy, which is especially tight and not great for long flights. Fortunately, these planes have plenty of extra-legroom economy seats , making snagging one of these preferred locations very important for a long journey.

When it comes to selecting seats, not everything is equal, but we can generally place seats in the following categories:

  • Some economy class seats you can select for free, with no strings attached . These tend to be the most unfavorable selections, including seats at the back of the plane or in the middle.
  • Some seats are located in a better section of the aircraft and require a nominal fee to reserve them.
  • Some seats include extra legroom and are offered for free to passengers with elite status.
  • Some seats are located along bulkhead walls or feature extra legroom, and you’re able to pay a significant fee to select them.

Basic Economy

While not physically limited to a specific section of the aircraft, Basic Economy fares are the most bare-bones tickets you can buy. While you can bring your carry-on on board, you’re not given an assigned seat until check-in. This effectively guarantees you the “leftovers” — usually the seats no one else wants to sit in.

If you’re the type of person who doesn’t want the uncertainty of a free-for-all seat selection or wants less stress on the day of departure, don’t choose a Basic Economy seat.

Here are the pros and cons of Basic Economy seats:

  • Attractive fares
  • You won’t be able to choose your seat
  • You won’t be able to guarantee sitting next to a companion or with your family
  • Group 9 boarding ; the very last group to board

Standard Economy (Main Cabin) Seats

AA Economy Class

Seats that are not designated as Main Cabin Extra, exit row, Preferred seats, or Premium Economy are considered standard economy seats — these are the most ubiquitous seats you’ll find on the aircraft and are also the least desirable.

For the most part, there is no fee to select these seats.

Regular Main Cabin seats are highlighted in blue on the seat map and are free to select.

American Airlines Main Cabin Regular Seats on Seat Map

Here are the pros and cons of standard economy seats:

  • These seats are free to select
  • These seats do not provide any additional marginal benefit — they have standard legroom and no additional perks

Preferred Seats

A Preferred seat does not necessarily have extra legroom but is located in a part of the plane that is more desirable . You might have a Preferred seat that’s located toward the front of the aircraft, for example. If you can’t snag a Main Cabin Extra seat, a Preferred seat is likely the next best thing.

While these seats don’t have extra legroom, they are far better than a middle seat or one near the rear of the aircraft.

Preferred seats are highlighted in green on the seat map. These seats have a better location, but otherwise don’t provide better comfort.

American Airlines Preferred Seats on Seat Map

Here’s a look at what you could expect to pay as an additional charge to secure a Preferred seat on a variety of routes (prices are for July 1, 2022):

  • Chicago (ORD) – Cancún (CUN): $36 to $43
  • Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) – Santiago (SCL): $93
  • Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) – Tulsa (TUL): $13 to $20
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Phoenix (PHX): $13 to $20
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Sydney (SYD): $93
  • New York (JFK) – London (LHR): $69 to $75
  • New York (JFK) – Los Angeles (LAX): $63
  • Washington, D.C. (DCA) – Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW): $29 to $35

Here’s an overview of the pros and cons of Preferred seats:

  • They tend to be located in more desirable areas of the plane
  • For non-elites, there’s usually an additional charge for these seats, which is hard to justify since there’s no extra legroom or recline

Main Cabin Extra

AA Main Cabin Extra

If you’re going to sit in economy, you want to be sure you select a Main Cabin Extra seat. These are the best seats you’ll find in the rear section of the plane.

What makes these seats special is that they have extra pitch — that is, the distance between the seat back of one seat to the seatback of the seat in front. Simply put, these seats have far more legroom than their counterparts in regular coach .

When looking on AA.com, Main Cabin Extra seats are highlighted in orange.

American Airlines Main Cabin Extra Seat Map

Main Cabin Extra tends to be located in the first several rows of the economy cabin, though there are some notable exceptions, including rear bulkhead seats or a wide-body aircraft with multiple sections of economy seats.

In addition to extra legroom, there are also a few other perks you’ll get in Main Cabin Extra:

  • Group 5 boarding , which is the first group of economy passengers to board the aircraft; keep in mind that if you have elite status or another qualifier that would allow you to board early, you board with the earliest possible group
  • A single, complimentary alcoholic drink
  • “Dedicated” overhead bin storage space , though this tends to be a hit or miss perk since there’s rarely any enforcement to prevent other passengers from storing their luggage in the dedicated space

Here are the various ways through which you can select a Main Cabin Extra seat:

  • AAdvantage Gold members, Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan  MVP members, and  Oneworld Ruby flyers can select a seat 24 hours before departure
  • AAdvantage Platinum , Platinum Pro , Executive Platinum , and ConciergeKey members, Alaska Airlines MVP Gold and MVP Gold 75K members, and Oneworld Sapphire and Emerald flyers can select seats at booking
  • You can also purchase a Main Cabin Extra ticket at any time in the booking process

Hot Tip: You may want to take a look at what it would take to achieve American AAdvantage elite status or Alaska MVP elite status if you fly American frequently. Elite status often provides Main Cabin Extra seats for free, so the cost of pursuing status may outweigh the cost of purchasing these seats each time you fly.

Here’s a look at what it typically costs to upgrade to a Main Cabin Extra seat on a variety of routes (prices are for July 1, 2022):

  • Chicago (ORD) – Cancún (CUN): $99
  • Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) – Santiago (SCL): $107 to $123
  • Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) – Tulsa (TUL): $22 to $24
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Phoenix (PHX): $22 to $25
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Sydney (SYD): $166
  • New York (JFK) – London (LHR): $76 to $113
  • New York (JFK) – Los Angeles (LAX): $109
  • Washington, D.C. (DCA) – Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW): $70 to $77

Here’s a look at the pros and cons of Main Cabin Extra seats:

  • They have far more legroom than traditional economy seats
  • They’re usually located in the forward portion of the aircraft , allowing you to get off the plane more quickly
  • If you don’t have elite status, purchasing these tickets can be costly
  • Middle seats are not blocked, so you may need to sit in a middle seat if there are no aisle or window seats available
  • The seats don’t offer any additional recline

While seats in the exit rows are sold as Main Cabin Extra seats, they come with a unique set of pros and cons that’s worth talking about separately.

First of all, it’s important to note that you must be at least 15 years old to sit in one of these seats and you must be “willing, ready, and able to assist in the event of an emergency.” You can’t sit in an exit row seat if you don’t meet all of those criteria, and selecting one of those seats without being able to perform the duties expected of you will result in you being moved — likely to a less-than-ideal seat since this will be done right before takeoff.

Exit rows are always highlighted in orange on the seat map, but also contain a specific designation of the exit row, so you know you’ll be seated there.

American Airlines Exit Rows on Seat Map

Exit row seats, in most circumstances, can be selected in the same manner as you would for a Main Cabin Extra seat. On some aircraft, there are multiple exit rows, so you’ll have more opportunities to select these seats.

Here’s what you can typically expect to pay for exit row seats on a variety of routes (prices are for July 1, 2022):

  • Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) – Santiago (SCL): $123
  • Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) – Tulsa (TUL): $24
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Phoenix (PHX): $25
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Sydney (SYD): $129
  • New York (JFK) – London (LHR): $113
  • Washington, D.C. (DCA) – Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW): $77

Here’s a look at the pros and cons of exit row seats:

  • They have among the best legroom on the plane
  • There’s ample room to get up and move around the cabin from these seats
  • If you’re the type of person who needs to use the bathroom frequently, you may want to consider a seat in the exit row
  • You must meet specific criteria to sit in an exit row
  • Not all exit rows are created equal: if there are 2 rows, seats in the first one don’t usually recline to prevent issues with passengers trying to escape in an emergency
  • The inflight entertainment screens are further away since they’re often built into the back of the seat in front of you
  • Most exit rows still consist of 3 seats, so you’ll usually have a person in the middle seat for your journey

Hot Tip: If you have a mobility issue, cannot assist in an emergency, or do not speak fluent English, you will not be eligible to sit in an exit row.

Premium Economy

AA Premium Economy GIG-MIA

Premium Economy can only be found on wide-body aircraft that operate longer international routes, though these seats do show up on the occasional domestic flight.

While Premium Economy seats are much more desirable — and in a different class — than regular economy seats, it’s worth discussing them here as they technically are a subset of the economy cabin on eligible flights.

Premium Economy seats are highlighted in blue on the seat map, and are specifically labeled as Premium Economy. You can only select these if you book a Premium Economy ticket.

American Airlines Premium Economy on Seat Map

Here are the pros and cons of flying in Premium Economy with American Airlines :

  • These seats provide far more legroom and width than economy seats
  • Some seats feature a foot or leg rest
  • They’re situated in a separate cabin
  • They provide access to a dedicated lavatory
  • Depending on the route, Premium Economy comes with upgraded meal service
  • Premium Economy fares can be expensive , depending on the route
  • These cabins do have middle seats, so you may end up in one
  • Bulkhead seats have the inflight entertainment system stowed in the armrest, reducing seat width slightly

There are many different seating types throughout American Airlines’ fleet, and it’s important to know the differences among each of these seat types so you know the best place to sit.

While all seats may look more or less the same, there are marked differences in legroom, location, overhead bin space, and more.

Keep this guide bookmarked so you can choose the best seat possible for your next flight in American Airlines economy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between basic economy and economy on american airlines.

The difference does not lie in the physical seat, but rather in the fare. Basic Economy tickets may not be able to be changed or refunded and don’t come with advanced seat assignments.

Is Main Cabin better than economy?

On American Airlines, “Main Cabin” is synonymous with economy class.

What is the difference between Main Cabin and Premium Economy on American Airlines?

American’s Main Cabin seats are traditional economy seats, typically tight with limited legroom, while Premium Economy seats are more reminiscent of domestic first class seats, with extra legroom, more recline, and a footrest. Keep in mind, though, that Premium Economy seats can only be found on wide-body aircraft.

What are the best seats on American Airlines?

This varies by aircraft type, but in general, the best seats to select are Main Cabin Extra or exit row seats, as they have the most legroom in economy.

Where united airlines is flying its high capacity 364-seat boeing 777s.

Aircraft include the world's oldest active 777.

  • United Airlines' non-Extended Range Boeing 777-200s have 364 seats in an economy-heavy, premium-light configuration.
  • They are used on high-capacity, short- to medium-range leisure routes.
  • Los Angeles-Honolulu, Chicago O'Hare-Orlando, and Denver-Washington Dulles are the most-served routes in February.

United has 19 so-called 'domestic' Boeing 777-200s, based on ch-aviation information, although not all are active. They are the non-ER versions and the original 777 variant. Few of the medium-haul aircraft were produced and even fewer remain. United's non-ER aircraft have had more seats added over the years, changing their economics and use. (It is a shame the above photo was not in the new livery, but I like it.)

The non-ER 777-200s have 364 seats, including the dreaded 3-4-3 layout in economy, although that is less problematic on the routes on which they fly. The high-capacity, leisure-heavy, medium-range 777-200 has low seat-mile costs, helped by being paid off, influencing where they are used.

The aircraft include N774UA, the second 777 to roll off the production line. At 29.6 years old, the high-cycle aircraft is the world's oldest active Triple Seven. It was delivered to United in 1996, making the carrier the launch customer of the variant – and the 777 generally. The image below is from 2000. (My favorite registration is still N777UA.)

113bu_-_United_Airlines_Boeing_777-222,_N774UA@FRA,20.10.2000_-_Flickr_-_Aero_Icarus

According to Flightradar24 , on February 9, the day I am writing this article, N774UA arrived in Chicago O'Hare from Los Angeles at 05:39. It will fly to Denver before continuing to Honolulu, where it will stay overnight.

Where the non-ers are flying.

Analyzing schedules using Cirium data shows that the 364-seat aircraft were used to Europe as recently as 2019 and to Asia until 2020 (although only from Guam). Things have changed considerably.

N777UA at SFO

The map below shows where they are scheduled to fly in February . Las Vegas only appears because of the Super Bowl. The shortest route is just 414 miles (666 km) between San Francisco and Los Angeles, while the longest is the 3,904-mile (6,283 km) link from Houston Intercontinental to Honolulu.

Across all airport pairs, the average stage length is 1,950 miles (3,138 km). In February 2019, when they were used to Europe and more, it was 3,797 miles (6,111 km). (Shame it wasn't 6,777.)

UA non-ER 777-200 network February 2024-2

There are a typical 45 daily flights by the non-ER 777s in February. Denver sees the variant the most, followed by Chicago O'Hare, Honolulu, Houston Intercontinental, and Los Angeles. Notice that Newark does not have flights in the examined month, but they return on March 31, the day northern airlines switch to summer schedules.

Served up to double daily

Ignoring a handful of routes that will see high-density equipment either on a one-off or otherwise very infrequent basis, 14 routes will be daily. Naturally, many are hub-to-hub services, which, of course, also connect major cities. They also include all three international airport pairs: daily from Chicago O'Hare, Denver, and Houston Intercontinental to Cancun.

A further six routes will operate almost, but not quite, daily. But those airport pairs with the most flights this month are as follows:

  • Los Angeles to Honolulu : double daily 'domestic' 777-200 flights
  • Chicago O'Hare to Orlando : double daily
  • Denver to Washington Dulles : up to double daily

Air France's Boeing 777-300ER Seating Configurations: A Brief Guide

IATA/ICAO Code: AF/AFR

Airline Type: Full Service Carrier

Hub(s): Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport

Year Founded: 1933

Alliance: SkyTeam

Airline Group: Air France-KLM

CEO: Anne Rigail

Country: France

Region: Europe

  • Air France's Boeing 777-300ER is the airline's most important aircraft in terms of prestige and premium offerings.
  • The high-density configuration of the 777-300ER can accommodate 472 passengers, with economy class dominating the layout.
  • Air France also has configurations with its luxurious La Première first class section and a mid-density layout with a mix of economy and business class seats.

Like many legacy carriers, the Boeing 777-300ER plays a critical role in the fleet of French flag carrier Air France and currently stands as the most numerous type operated by the airline. Currently, the airline operates 43 different 777-300ERs, and the airline also served as the launch operator for the most popular version of Boeing's best-selling 777 variant.

While the aircraft will soon be eclipsed in terms of numbers by the A220, of which 32 are in service, and 28 remain on order, the 777-300ER will still remain the most important in terms of prestige and premium offerings. Much like American Airlines only used to offer its intercontinental Flagship First product on its 777-300ERs, Air France only offers its luxurious La Premiere first class cabin on the type.

However, the jet's utilization is not limited to premium-heavy routes, and the plane remains among the most versatile in the carrier's fleet. In order to cater to a broad array of markets, the airline has three primary types of configurations (and four seating layouts) that it offers on the jet. In this article, we will take a deeper look at exactly what Air France's Boeing 777-300ER has to offer passengers.

High density

Taking a look at the data for Air France's considerable contingent of Boeing 777-300ERs, we can see that the most capacious configuration has space for an impressive 472 passengers. According to SeatGuru , this setup is known as the Caribbean configuration, with the high-density layout reflecting the leisure-focused nature of Air France's routes to the region.

Flight Review: Air France 777 Premium Economy - Worse than Economy?

While Air France operates a dozen planes with this configuration, they are not the only widebodies to operate services between the airline's Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) hub and destinations within the sunny Caribbean. Notably, the carrier flies its smaller Airbus A330-200 on flights to Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) in Saint Martin.

The 472-seat Caribbean layout is dominated by economy class seats, with these accounting for 430 passengers, or more than 91% of the overall capacity. Laid out 10-abreast in a 3-4-3 configuration, they offer a standard seat pitch of 31 inches. Some carriers prefer to keep nine seats per row, but given the types of flights that these aircraft operate for Air France, this cozier configuration makes more sense.

In front of the dominant economy section, these 777-300ERs also have a 28-seat premium economy cabin. These reclining seats have a 40-inch pitch and are laid out eight-abreast in a 2-4-2 setup. Meanwhile, business class is much less of a priority in this configuration, with the front of the plane featuring just 14 flatbeds. All of these have direct aisle access in a four-abreast (1-2-1) configuration.

Get all the latest aviation news right here on Simple Flying!

These flights make a lot of sense, as the airline handles primarily seasonal leisure traffic to destinations in the Caribbean. Business travel between France and the sunny island destinations remains limited, and as such, offering many premium seats would likely be detrimental to the carrier's bottom line.

The other end of the scale

Meanwhile, for routes where premium products are a higher priority, Air France also has 19 Boeing 777-300ERs that feature its luxurious La Première first class section, according to information published by the carrier . This exclusive cabin consists of a single row of four suites and is among the most luxurious products in the sky today.

Back in 2022, the airline decided to revamp its most luxurious cabin , adding a number of features and making some bold design choices. While the commercial aviation industry has begun to lean towards fully enclosed suites with mechanical doors, Air France has moved in another, somewhat classier direction.

In this cabin, the carrier offers passengers privacy with a curtain, offering an old-timey feel and a unique level of French character. The carrier continues to innovate in La Premiere now, with new menus from three-Michelin-star chef Dominque Crenn to be introduced this summer .

Business class is also well represented in this configuration, which has a total capacity of 296 passengers. Indeed, almost 20% of the seats onboard are business class flatbeds, with a total of 58. These are also laid out four abreast in the same 1-2-1 layout that graces the French flag carrier's Caribbean-configured 777s.

Air France 777 Vandalized At Paris Airport

Moving towards the back of Air France's 19 La Première -configured Boeing 777-300ERs, we come across the same 28-seat premium economy cabin that is found onboard its high-density Caribbean-configured widebodies. Finally, this layout has 206 economy seats, less than half the number offered in the high-density setup. They share the same 3-4-3 configuration and have a standard 32-inch pitch.

Somewhere in between

Air France's remaining 12 Boeing 777-300ERs have seating configurations that fall between the two already mentioned in terms of capacity. Indeed, the third layout has a total of 381 seats, of which 315 (82.7%) can be found in the economy section, according to SeatMaps . Once again, this cabin represents a 10-abreast affair with a 32-inch pitch. This layout also has the smallest premium economy cabin.

Indeed, it consists of just 24 seats, compared to the 28 offered in the other setups. While this mid-density layout has a sizeable business class cabin, with 42 spaces in total, this offers a less favorable experience, as the seats are not fully lie-flat. They are also laid out in a seven-abreast (2-3-2) setup, meaning not all seats have direct aisle access. It is worth looking out for this when booking such flights.

It is also important to note that the carrier does offer a fourth configuration that falls into this middle category. Currently, the carrier is retrofitting its 381-seat 777-300ERs to include just 369 seats, some of which have already entered service with the new setup. This will include a higher 48 business class seats, a doubled premium economy cabin with 48 seats, and 273 seats in the back of the plane.

The fleet in a nutshell

Let's conclude by taking a closer look at the exact makeup of Air France's Boeing 777-300ER fleet. As mentioned, the design is the French flag carrier's most numerous aircraft type, and ch-aviation currently lists 43 examples as being present.

Of these, 39 are active, with four undergoing maintenance. These jets are 15.5 years old on average, just above the average (15.2) for the fleet as a whole. Furthermore, two of the airline's 777-300ER aircraft are painted in the SkyTeam alliance livery.

Round-trip premium economy fares between the U.S. and Germany typically range between $1,200 and $2,000. However, I only needed a one-way ticket as I was reviewing a completely different airline back. We ended up paying about $860 for a one-way ticket from my home airport of John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Frankfurt, via Charlotte.
