Teaching sight words helps promote literacy as well as reading and spelling fluency in later grades. The majority of worksheets and activities below are designed around the Dolch sight words list , which includes the most common 315 words in the English language (220 “service” words and 95 nouns).

Sight words are divided into groups for each grade, so children can build their high frequency words vocabulary continuously.

So far, I’ve created activities and sight words worksheets for grades pre-k to grade 1. And I keep making new ones, so make sure to come back and get more of my free printables.

Sight Word Worksheets

The English language is fun to learn, and the pool of grammar is vast. There are so many things to learn in this language. While teachers can provide the students with assistance in learning word spellings and meanings, they find it difficult to teach the kids. These are the most commonly used words in writing, and students very frequently come across these terms when reading. These words are known as sight words. To better understand what these words are, you need to know that these are those that we use very frequently in our daily lives. But as they do not follow the rules of spelling or the six syllable types, they are difficult to teach. Decoding is difficult with these words, and students are often asked to memorize them. Words such as come does, who are the sight words that are most frequently used.

Unscramble and Sentences

Unscramble the words below to find sight words. Say these words to yourself or say them for a classmate. Use one of the words in the sentence below.

Look at each sight word. Write it in the middle column. Then fold your paper and try to write it without looking.

How to Practice Your Sight Words

In every language, including the English language, there are some words that are so frequently used that without them, sentences might feel incomplete. Some of these words do not have a concrete image that will help one understand its meaning and usage. Kids at a young age are asked to memorize the words. These words are sight words. A problem that many parents and teachers face while helping students with sight words is finding ways to make students practice sight words. There are several activities that can help kids practice their sight words. Sight Word Vanish - Take sidewalk chalk and a spray bottle with water in it. Write a list of sight words on the ground. Ask kids run towards the list, count till 5, and make them stop at 5. Ask the kids to read the word they have stopped on; if they are able to read it, make them spray it. If the child has some issues with the word, make them read it but do not let them spray it. Repeat it until the list is complete. Word Hunt - Pick a book or a newspaper and ask your little ones to identify the sight words. If they are still in the learning phase, help them spot these words. Repeat the same activity until the kid begins to identify the sight words on their own. Word-O - Provide your kid with a sight words' menu, more like a list. Call out the sight words and make them spot the word on the list. If they are able to find the word easily, they can mark the word on their list. If they struggle with it, make them identify it but do not let them mark it. Make this a competition, and the first one to mark all their words will call out 'word-o.' You can set rewards too. These are some of the sight words practicing activities that can help you teach your kid sight words even at home!

How to Match Words to Pictures

Matching words to pictures could be one of the most fun exercises for children. While your child enjoys doing activities as such, they also get to improve their cognitive abilities. They are honing their analytical skills as they progress. Moreover, they become decisive, and their judging skills only polish furthermore. Practice - Let us just believe the kids matching words to pictures are around five to six years of age. Now the thing with such little kids is that they either lose focus on what they do or barely take an interest. Even if they do take an interest, they will do it without putting any thought into their work. So, you have to ensure, while they are matching words to pictures, you don’t forget to explain them and that they know why they are actually matching words to pictures. Clarity in understanding - Explain the kid with clarity. All the how is and the why is so that he understands the very nitty-gritty of matching words to pictures. Not only will he take interest, but also, he’ll find the activity quite fun, and you’ll see quite a development in his overall personality.

Learning sight words takes lots of repetition and creative ways to keep kids learning while having fun. Presenting a variety of worksheets and other materials is a quick, easy way to practice sight words .

From pre-k to 3rd grade and the Dolch noun words, this option from SightWordActivities hits them all. In a progressive format that becomes increasingly challenging to target older students, this pack takes your child through the entire list of Dolch sight words.  In set 1, kids will trace, write, color, find, and match letters of the focus word. There are 1,000 words on the Fry’s sight word list from kindergarten through fifth grade, and this has them all. This set by EducatorSquad includes one page, each featuring a different sight word along with a list of Fry’s sight words for tracking purposes. Each page allows the child to read, trace, write, cut, and glue each word. If you want one activity to encompass as many words as possible, this is the one you need. These worksheets work great for word work or as a center activity.

What Are Sight Words and Why Are They Important?

Sight words are commonly used words children must learn for reading success. Often, these words don’t follow the “rules” and can be difficult to sound out. The reason they are called sight words is because children should come to recognize them by sight and be able to read them quickly. 

Since sight words make up roughly 75% of beginning reader material, knowing these words will increase a student’s reading success and fluency. The first 100 sight words actually account for 50% of beginner texts on their own!

Not having to sound out these common words gives kids confidence knowing there are words they can recognize in nearly any text they read. This allows them to concentrate on unknown words and can improve reading comprehension.

Targeting these words early on gives children a good foundation for reading and can encourage a love of reading. 

Why Use Worksheets For Sight Words?

As mentioned above, repetition is the key to success when it comes to sight words. The more times a child sees reads and practices the word, the more recognizable it is. Worksheets provide a quick activity for introducing, practicing, or a transition activity to reinforce early lessons. 

Easy, predictable worksheets give kids assurance of success and allow them to work independently on the activity. The goal of sight word practice is to create word recognition through memorization, which then leads to aiding in reading fluency. Giving kids practice worksheets usually requires little to no prep work, is easy to send or print at home, and is readily available for unexpected downtimes, creating a win-win for educators and students. 

What Is the Difference Between Dolch and Fry Sight Words?

Many of the activities above mention Dolch or Fry sight words. You may be wondering what these are and is one better than the other. 

Dolch sight words were compiled by Edward William Dolch in 1936. He created the list based on the most common word usage in children’s literature and is made of the 220 words he deemed high-frequency words and a separate list of nouns which also fall into this category. Dolch words are organized by age group. The text of most children’s books consists of 50-75% of words coming from the Dolch list. 

Edward Fry came up with his word list decades later in 1957 and is comprised of words from all parts of speech, including nouns. These lists are ranked by the frequency they are seen in children’s texts. Fry word lists contain 1,000 words and are broken into sets of 100. The top 25 Fry words account for nearly a third of the words in the published text, while the top 100 words account for almost half. 

No matter which list you use, you’ll encounter most of the same words just at different stages of learning. Which list you use is unimportant as both give a solid foundation for reading. 

Learning sight words can take some time but providing lots of practice for children is the key to mastering them. Worksheets are a great tool to use when learning both Fry and Dolch sight words. Sight words can be tricky for a child who is learning to read. These are words that are so common that children should learn to quickly recognize them by sight, rather than ‘sounding them out’. Some of these words cannot be “sounded out” using phonetic principles. Our worksheets assist a child in learning to quickly recognize these sight words.

Thank you so much for this list of worksheets! It helped SO much in compiling sight word homework for my class. Our school has a random list of sight words (none of which coincide with any specific list such as Dolch or Fry), so this helped a TON! You had every word except for one! 🙂

I would like to first start off by saying, ‘THIS IS A FANTASTIC SITE”. I am a special education teacher and am ALWAYS surfing the web for interesting, through, in depth, learning sights for my students various domains of learning. This sight is a God sent! It is not shallow like so many other sights listed on the web. The information is attractive, filled with learning, writing, practice writing, motor skill development (fine, large) coloring, reading, vocabulary and spelling. Whom ever the developers for this sight are I salute them from one educator to another.

I have one request, while making packing for the various grade level of my students… I have printed out the coloring name pages; can you insert also the months, of the year, and the days of the week worksheets for me. I would count it a special favor if this is possible. A devoted teacher to this site from this day forward!

PS. This site will be one of the first sites I go to to find critical learning worksheet material for my students K-3. Again, thanks!!!

Free printables for kindergarten: Sight word help, 12 ways | Back to School Guide

Finding all of these free sight word printables for kindergarten instantly brings me back to those sweet early days of school, sniff.

I have teens now, but I remember how scary it could be to send your kid off to kindergarten, hoping that their reading and writing skills were on track with the other kids. So I wanted to spend a little extra time finding some helpful free sight word printables and worksheets for you kindergarten parents — or those of you with preschoolers who are already starting to read.

My only advice: Don’t let it stress you out. Please.

Whether you’re worried about your slower reader, or bragging about your kindergartener’s interest in War & Peace (as if), it all more or less evens out eventually. Hang in there.

Free printables for kindergarten: Sight word help, 12 different ways.

A great place to start if you’re teaching sight words: This comprehensive if simple printable list of all the Dolch words, sorted by grade. I like that they appear in frequency order, not alphabetically.

Print out these solid, smart, free worksheets for sight word practice in sequential order. There are two sets of 25 each to help kids get lots of good writing practice too.

If your kids are more visual learners, these are outstanding practice sheets. You’ll get 40 full pages of free sight word printables just by signing up with your email.

I love how colorful these cards are, making them more interesting than basic flash cards. They’re not free, but just $3 for the entire set from Kindergarten Mom, through Ed Zone Publishing is worth it.

While they aren’t flash cards per se, these 40 cards we included in our roundup of 7 helpful kindergarten printables are nicely designed and offer lots of fun for kids in practice mode.

There are a full 18 printable games here for kindergartners, including  bingo  (above), snakes and ladders, and go fish. Hey, whatever keeps learning fun!

If you have kids who need something to do with those fidgety hands, play dough mats could be the perfect sight word activity for you. Kindergartenn mom offers all 220 Dolch words for just $3.

This free printable sight word worksheet uses the color-by-number format kids love..only with words. So smart, I bet you could even create your own with free coloring sheets of all kinds.

This learn-to-read sight word flip chart will take a little assembling on your part, but what a clever way to help kids understand the basic construction of early sight words.

If you haven’t noticed yet, I love so much of what’s available at Kindergarten mom to help kids with reading. Here, you can find 40 dab n dot printable worksheets that include the first Dolch pre-primer sight words; download them individually to keep it free. She also offers a paid 40 week program worth checking out.

I like how these printables blend the fun of a memory game with the functionality of flash cards. In fact, you can use them for both.

Half craft project, half reading practice, I’m giving this one an A for creativity! She describes it as allowing children to “deliver mail” by matching word endings to their particular family (-ig, -an, -ot, –og, -at), one for each of five mailboxes. So fun.

Sight Words List

Here you can find a sight words list for each of the five categories from Pre-Primer to 3rd Grade.  If you've been working your way through the worksheets I have created and need more words to practice, you will want to print out the word lists below and keep reading.

Right now I have a few units covering pre-primer words since that's what our youngest child has been working on.  I will add more as we move on, but if you have completed all the activity sheets I have made, then you can continue on with these printout.

Each sight words list below is broken up into one of five categories, so just find the category that you need to work on and keep reading away!  As I mentioned, there are a few lesson plans covering pre-primer words already, so if you haven't gone through them yet, be sure to check them out at the bottom of this page.  Otherwise, work you way through the lists below, separated by category in the following order:

Printable Sight Words List

The Dolch list of sight words contains 220 words that are essential to building a basic set of reading skills.  You may often hear other terms such as high-frequency words or popcorn words.  While there is a slight difference between the terms, they are often used interchangeably and the words on different lists often overlap.

If you are interested in learning more about the differences between high frequency words and sight words, you can find lots of great info on the differences between sight words and high-frequency words  right here.  

There are a few different ways to use the word lists below.  The simplest method is to just print out a sight words list and practice saying and reading the words with your child.  Start with a few words at a time.  Take turns saying the words, spelling the words, and using them in sentences.  Once he has mastered a few of the words, add a couple more and keep plugging away.  Before long, she'll have the entire list down.

For a fun activity, once you've printed out the list, have your child cut out all of the words on that list.  You can then lay them out and try to make sentences out of the words.  You can glue them to small craft magnets and use them on your fridge too.

Types of sight word list.

• Dolch sight word list –  Prepared by Dr. Edward William Dolch, this list has been prepared after reading some children’s books. Several  free Dolch sight words worksheets PDFs  can be downloaded as knowing  Dolch sight word list  makes reading easier.
• Top 150 Written Words – The list contains 150 words and is recommended by a  Professor from Yale University.
• Fry sight words –  This list mainly contains  3RD-grade sight words  and  sight words for 4th graders  besides having  sight words  for 5th to 9th grade .  There are 1000  fry words  that a child knows will allow them to read around  90% of words in a book.
• Pre-K sight words –  This includes  kindergarten sight word worksheets,  and some  kindergarten sight words  are – a, am, can, in, like, my, no, go, and, are, for, he, here, see, play, the, she, said, etc.

U words for kids  are not found much, as a result of which various educators have curated separate u sight words. Both pre-schoolers and kindergarten kids can use the  sight word worksheets.  

Some  U words for kids  are – Us, undo, up, use, upset, unit, uncle, upper, etc.

BENEFITS OF SIGHT WORDS 

Parents and teachers should keep themselves equipped with  sight word worksheets.  These are very beneficial for kids –

• Sight words increase the speed of reading.
• Practicing  sight word worksheets  daily shapes fluency.
• Speed and fluency, in turn, enhance comprehension.
• It lays the foundation for building a solid vocabulary.

Some research conducted pointed out some drawbacks of the sight word.

These are –

• A sight word list  is long, and therefore, memorizing these is an uphill task. It has been estimated that around 35 trials are required per word.
• Mentors who use  sight word lists  and focus less on phonics instruction make it challenging to inculcate a word-recognition knack that is needed throughout an individual’s lifespan.
